Samyang Optics 50 mm F1.4 AS UMC is a standard manual focus photo lens designed for full frame image sensor. Samyang 50 mm F1.4 AS UMC is a manual focus lens with a low F number. You may control the lens precisely when shooting under various exposure environment including relatively dark or too bright situations. This lens features 9 lenses in 6 groups including 1 glass aspherical lens (ASP), and 1 hybrid aspherical lens (H-ASP) to offer high resolution. Especially, H-ASP minimizes color aberration to realize exceptional image quality and high contrast for center and corner of image even when aperture is fully opened. Ultra Multi Coating (UMC) technology of Samyang Optics optimizes the light penetration and minimizes flare and ghost. With such optical construction, it has 0.45 m of minimum focal length to take photos of subjects in near distance. There are 8 aperture blades designed to be almost as a full circle when aperture is closed which expresses starlike ray clearly and beautifully. The frame of the lens is compact and solid since it is made of high-strength aluminum alloy so you can create trustworthy images. Also, detachable petal-shaped lens hood minimizes flare and ghost by sheltering lens from unnecessary lights.

I purchased the Samyang lens in the hopes that I would be able to mount it on the Sigma SD Quattro, as I had done with other Pentax lenses in the past. Sadly, the Samyang depicted on B&H photos website image is incorrect. The image shown on the website indicates that the rear element is free and clear, whereas in actuality the rear mount has a tab protruding (for aperture actuation) near the rear glass element, that prevents the lens from being mounted on the Sigma SD Quattro. I did get the lens to work on an Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera via an adapter and found it to be extremely sharp with good contrast. It is extremely well-built and hefty.

Good kens for portrait photography. It has manual focusing and you might need to get used to it but once you are, you will get an amazing results. Note that this lens is great for taking photos while you take your time and plan and not on the go.

I picked this lens up because I wanted a better quality lens than my 50 1.8 STM. I've always wistfully glanced at Fuji lenses with manual aperture rings because they look cool and I liked the idea of the manual functionality. This lens has been as much fun as I thought it would have been with the added bonus of an absolutely amazing image quality. Focus takes practice. But as I get better I've found that image quality is one of the best of all of my lenses. Super fun, great images, cheaper end of the cost spectrum. What's not to like?

First, the negative, it's manual only, and the f-stops (on my D810 anyway) run from F0 to F6 in aperature priority mode (I guess that's an error/approximation). Now for the positive; it's way sharper and has better color than my 50mm 1.8 Nikon G lens. It also has nicer bokeh. Definitely a 5 star lens if you don't mind the manual nature of it. Then again, if you want great quality, then it's a tradoff you're willing to endure. Samyang/Rokinon is a very underrated brand in my opinion. My 85mm, and 14mm lenses by them are hella sharp as well. I'm selling my Nikon 50mm, as this lens is far superior to it optically (not convenience or size-wize though; it weights about twice as much as my Nikon version).
Love this lens! I own a video production company and prior to this had the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM and hated it. Pulling focus with a STM lens is the most terrible thing you can try to do. Pulling focus with this is super smooth and since it is longer as well it is very precise. Build feels nice and the hood snaps into place real well. Ran some tests to see how it preformed with sharpness, contrast, vignetting, and color and liked the results. Would never shoot wide open at f/1.4 unless I wanted that crazy look, but stopping down to f/2.0 gets rid of a lot of vignetting and is totally usable. The sharpness is super good all the way from f/2.0 all the way up. Great value for the money!
50mm is close to what the human eye sees and this lens renders it beautifully. Focus ring is a little stiff but that is good for astrophotography as it stays in focus. It is sharp from edge to edge, and the bokeh is very nice. Here are some examples.
This is the second copy I have tried (Rokinon version last time) and was planning to use this for astrophotography...it's not up to the task! This Samyang copy had a minor de-centered element and on an APS-C the aberrations in the corners was not much of an improvement over the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II. The overall feel of the manual focus and aperture controls are nice and this may make a nice lens for other uses but not astrophotography. Returning the lens and off to consider the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART!
This might be a good lens for portraits, but not for Astrophotography. Has too much distortion and coma in the corners and edges, especially at the wide open f stops. Apertures 1.4 to 4.0 are not good. Starts getting better at 5.6 and 8.0, but for night photos, you want to use the lower f stops. Center of image is generally good. It would just require too much cropping to get rid of the bad corners and edges.
I use this for my short films, weddings and street photography. People really are underestimating Mr. Samyang. I use this beautiful lens on my 6d and 70d.I like the look and feel of lens. It's big and is a blast to manual focus! I perfer manual focusing instead of auto focus. I also love the price! I haven't found anything I did not like about this lens. I also purchased the 85 & 35mm samyang. No complaints here.P.S. The aperture is adorable. I set my camera to video mode to take pictures with this lens. That is how it works for me. I'm sure there are other ways.
One of the neat things about this lens, and something that I consider a perk, is the fact that it's fully manual. Typically, this might be seen as a drawback as a lot of the features of lenses now are automated but this just forces you to think differently about the type of photo you want to take, and how you should take it. Not to mention, it also lets you engage with your camera more as well. The design of it is also really elegant as well. I'm a huge fan.
