I doubt any of my clients would have noticed the difference if I splurged on the Sigma instead. If you want the best performance to value ratio, buy this beauty!

I bought the lens despite all the reviews that said the AF was bad. My thought was that the lens would just miss focus, but I was wrong...I had the lens for two weeks before I started to see what all the reviews were talking about. The lens would try to focus, then get stuck out of focus, forcing me to re-attach the lens.At first it was no big deal, it would happen maybe once every 20 times I had to focus. The problem got worse and worse throughout the weeks, so I decided to update my camera's firmware (A7II) as well as the actual lens firmware, which forced me to buy the Lens Station. As of now, I consider myself lucky if it can focus for more than 2 shots without it locking up (and forcing me to re-attach). It is super annoying, and a complete waste of $500. ... MoreI bought the lens despite all the reviews that said the AF was bad. I have had this lens for about a year now. I did a lot of research before buying it. I was very happy with it until it developed really serious autofocus malfunctioning. It would jitter and make audible almost popping sounds and never achieve focus. this happened in various scenerios...seemed to be more often in low light, but also happened outside. I reached out so Samyang and they sent me a new one...which worked fine for about three weeks and then the SAME issues developed. I found that switching focus modes seemed to help. However, it recently really messed me up while recording video--in a well lit interview setup, the lens (on a6500) on several interviews couldnt find focus, it got way out of focus and seemed to jitter in and out...and then literally just gave ... MoreI have had this lens for about a year now. This lens is seriously good value for what you get. Paired with my Sony A7, many photos taken have came out perfect when focus actually lands. Alternatively, this lens consistently misses focus and struggles in low light. Any time focusing to infinity almost never actually lands focus. This makes me have to refocus multiple times and assume the focus lands. If I wanted to use manual focus, I would have gotten a manual focus lens, but when the whole perk of auto focus doesn't necessarily work, it becomes a big struggle. Trying to take photos in focus. Otherwise the lens is high quality and feels great to use. Focus is relatively quick and sounds low toned and not annoying to use, it feels "good to focus" this lens. Just wish focus actually landed consistently.
Honestly talking. I am extremely happy with Samyang prime lenses for my Sony a7 III. I previously bought an 85mm f/1.4 and the result was amazing. So I decided to get the 35mm f/1.4 as well. They are perfect and cover a great range. The picture quality is unexplainable. They are very silent and the auto focus is fast with my Sony. I also bought a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 with B&H and these are my working tools. I think about getting a 24mm Samyang in the future.
I like this lens but not love it. It’s definitely a much cheaper option that the Sony lens. The 1.4 bokeh is great but the blur is not as good as the Sony lens. Fast auto focus for photos. I haven’t tried video but I’ve heard it’s difficult to autofocus with video.Pictures are very sharp and I love it!Biggest downside to this lens is that it’s bulky and heavy, not probably not something I would like to carry when travelling. Much better Off with a zoom or 50mm. Other downsides are that it’s lens cap and seal feel cheap. Then again, I’m paying $1000 less than the Sony lens. This is probably a good lens if you’re planning to shoot close up portraits or product photography.Overall I’m happy with it.
Lots of barrel distortion. Quite a bit of chromatic aberration at wide apertures. Focuses really close which is nice when walking around a museum. Not very compact - noticeably taller in length than my Sony 16-35mm, 28mm, 55mm, or my Zeiss Batis 85mm, with inverted hood etc packed in my bag. Keep in mind if you have limited depth to work with in your camera bag if you need to pack your lenses vertically rather than horizontally in a mirrorless-sized bag vs full-size DLSR bag.Sharpness Evaluations:Looking at the RAW images on 24MP camera, it's soft at F/1.4, sharp at F/1.8, razor sharp at F/2.2 till F/11, then drops off between F/13-16. It's hard to tell but I'd guess that peak sharpness is about F/7.1.Looking at the RAW images down-res'ed to 4K 16:9 for ... MoreLots of barrel distortion. No matter when I tested it close-focus, medium-focus, or on a wall.My definitions of sharpness:Soft = I'm disappointed. Subtle details aren't visible such as skin texture, hair, eyelashes, and fabric.Sharp = I'm quite happy. The fine details mentioned above can be seen.Razor sharp = Sharp as far as my 24MP camera can resolve: above details are crisp and contrasty.
So I purchased this lens based off feedback from a fellow internationally known Photographer. I wanted to cut costs, but not quality. With this lens, that is exactly what I did! One of the highlights about this lens, other than the 1.4 aperture (bokeh!), is its ability to lock focus around 7 inches from my subject. Additionally, the build quality and feel is comparable to my Sony 85mm f/1.8. I often get them confused. The only issue I've experienced is when trying to track high school sports. The auto focus locked-up on me. However, I didn't purchase this lens for sports, so this doesn't affect me at all. Overall, it's a great lens with a great price!
I bought this lens to have a fast f/1.4 at 35mm without paying through the nose for a first-party lens. So far Ive shot a few candids at home, and an evening wedding using only ambient light (outdoor and indoor at the reception). Softness at f/1.4 is there, but manageable. Same with distortion. Upgraded to firmware v.03 with the lens station (purchased separately) but dont see any major difference in continuous autofocus speed. Still some missed focus points in crowd shots, but again manageable. Probably 80% keep rate, which is in line with expectations and speaks more to my unfamiliarity with my A7iii focus modes than the lens itself. Ill keep the lens - it does what I want and I can work through what few issues I have with it.
Worst lens out of the new box I've ever purchased. Returned it after a few days of shooting. Used the Samyang dock to adjust autofocus and upgrade firmware to the most recent as of 12/1/19. I could not get the focus even close to accurate. Out of the box it was inches off from a short distance of 4 feet from the subject with multiple shots taken. Some like the build quality but I really did not like the finish. It's also a very long 35mm lens and weighty so it didn't balance well on my A7R III. A little too warm for my tastes which are typical of Samyang. I'll stick with my Samyang 35mm f2.8 that I purchased used from B&H for $213. That lens is very sharp at f2.8 and is an amazing pancake lens, regardless of the low cost, and a very useful focal range of 35mm as a ... MoreWorst lens out of the new box I've ever purchased.
