I have over 250tb of G Drives. My video production company runs on them. This refresh is not a welcome update. This is the first WD drive I’ve had that failed and their warranty replacement process is a joke. So now they have my drive, my $650, and are coming up with every excuse to delay sending me a new one. G Drive was an industry trusted brand and I’m afraid San Disk Extreme ruined it. They need to get their act together if they want to keep working with professionals but for now I’m worried and double backing up everything in case another one of these fails.

I bought the 22Tb version of this drive, and after 1-2 yrs it failed on me. I brought it to a professional data recovery service, and they concluded: "There is a power failure on this drive. It doesn't spin up with your power supply or with a known good replacement power supply. No lights, no power on, no LED function...". The attempt fee to recover lost content is high. They said GDrive uses a new technology here "helium" (instead of air to reduce viscosity) in one of the compartments to achieve 22tb capacity, and this is not good for data recovery, bc that compartment is one of the routes to attempt recovery but they won't risk going there bc of risk of dealing with helium or not understanding how to do it safely. They recommended NAS drive solutions from Synology brand (better designed to work w Apple) with Raid 5-6 with redundancy as the safest ways to backup content as well as backblaze backups for online alternative. Filed warranty claim with Western digital, sent drive to their data recovery, what a surprise - they couldnt recover anything due to the poor management business decision to use new inferior recovery tech. Dealing with support for a replacement was pain. Had to keep calling to get updates from them. They were delayed for months after my replacement was approved (Incident: 230325-000243), and still did not mail it. I'm on the hold with them right now.

I bought the 22TB drive to transfer all my files from several different hard drives and SSDs as a backup. 4 days after backing almost everything up (it had 6TB left), it caused my imac to continuously restart. Plugged it into my macbook and the same thing happened so I know it's the drive. Glad I didn't get this to be my main backup drive. I'm returning this but now I have tons of files on this thing that I can't even erase before returning it. Hopefully no one can access that info because it's an identity theft risk.

I bought on 09/22/22 this professional version to backup all my video projects and on 11/20/22 stopped working.Out of nowhere the computer didn't read it anymore, there is no way to access to it. The disk appears as 'Not Initialized' in Disk Management. In the Event Viewer talks about 'failed due to a hardware error' and in 'Command Prompt' the message that I get is failed due to a fatal device hardware error. It's not in warranty anymore so I lost my money and all the footage for a model that is obviously faulty. B&H should be aware of that.
Western digital wont post my honest review or the truth of the experience.Drive lasted 5 days of constant sleep and slow speeds before it became unreadable and lost all data. WD kept my RMA for 4 weeks before I called and they told me we do not have this drive we will send you a smaller, non "pro" version.
This product is exceptionally poor. I would rate as ) stars. After using G-drives for personal and biomedical research use (at least $20,000 in purchases over the years), I bought this new drive. This drive mounts and unmounts poorly, gets corrupted easily, does not perform to specs, and repeatedly crashes. I tried working with WD to replace with something different even to pay the diffrerence in cost or do anything to get a different drive such as the new Project G-drive (since so many people find the SanDisk Professional G-Drive has problems), but they will not work with me. After having to reformat this drive multiple times and find a way to store data in the interim and then put it back, I will not take the chance on using the same drive. So stay away from this drive and WD.
Avoid this drive for anything other than back up work. The drive is very noisy, and very slow. This drive is constantly running and I have never had a drive make so much noise. This would be fine to use as a back up but I am going to be replacing this drive with another brand. Western Digital has taken what was a great brand G-Drive and ruined the value. I will not purchase another G-Drive.
Very solid but should have a version preloaded with NTFS.it is NOT possible to format with an older(2018) PC unless you have a very short 10g+ usb c to usb a cable. After i purchased a 10g+ usb c to usb A cable (6 inches). I was able to format the drive in NTFS. Pc would not detect the drive otherwiseshould mention in the description that pc with usb c port required or above mentioned cable required for pc's with only usb a.I was able to figure it out because of my education.Others may not. Only caused a delay in setting it up because i needed to wait for another cable.Product itself is great that's why 5 stars.I'd give like 4.5 stars for description lacking.
I have 5 G drives that I have purchased over the last couple of years to back up video. They have all worked flawlessly. The newest drive is fine enough but for some reason will no longer power my MacBook Pro thru the USB 2.0.... Why folks feel compelled to redesign a great product I don't understand. Will be back to the drawing board for the next purchase.
Ordered two drives, the first one wouldn't even mount or be read, and we tried 7 different MacsThe second drive failed after 4 days of use. About 300gbs was loaded onto it and the drive was probably used for a total of 6 hours.Terrible. Don't phase out the old type of drive until these are rock solid.
