Ive used pump filters, sawyer minis, sawyer squeezes, and now the micro squeeze. The pump filters weighed too much, the mini’s filtration rates were slow, and the squeeze leaked too easily around the threads and could only be used as a screw on filter. The micro squeeze fixed all that. It has the flow rate of the squeeze, and the reliable connections of the mini. The best sawyer yet.

The kit is small and lightweight. With proper care, the filter is very long-lasting and does not involve the regular replacement of disposable filter elements. The compact and ultra-light features of the Sawyer water filter are completed negated by their pitifully slow filtration rate and clogging. The Sawyer products have a horribly slow filtration rate (even when brand-new), and they don't have any pre-filters. Thus, the Sawyer filters clog up immediately. Your can back-flush the filter to clear it. But it's extremely aggravating because it takes SO-O-O-O-O long to filter just a tiny amount of water that you then have to waste back-flushing. I threw my Sawyer into the garbage with much joy and celebration.

Fell in love with the Sawyer Mini on the AT in 2016 after my in-line gravity fed filter system froze in the Smokey Mountains. Upgraded to Sawyer Squeeze. Enjoyed the very rapid filtration rate! Experimented with the Micro Squeeze while doing the Virginia triple crown in 2021. Micro Squeeze was definitely lighter than the Squeeze, but had a much slower filter rate. My hiking partner got tired of waiting for me to filter water and loaned me his Squeeze. Since then, I’ve returned to using the Squeeze. Bottom line, if weight is truly an issue, go with the Micro, but expect to spend more time filtering water. For me, life is too short, so I went back to the Squeeze.

Squeezing pouches to force water through got tougher and tougher. Finally decided to follow the instructions in their back flush video, including soaking it in hot water and many, many back flushes. My frustration culminated when I brought it to Yosemite and had to squeeze my pouches with all my might to generate any flow. Setting up a gravity system produced absolutely ZERO flow.I never ever filtered very silty or turbid water. Three bags split open near the top by the end of the third day, despite daily back flushing. We taped the splits with Tenacious Tape, but the bags still leaked. One bag had three leaks that could not be taped. Only one bag held up for the entire trip. A bad problem on a long trip. After we were down to one good bag, we back flushed at least twice per day. From the beginning of the trip, we applied steady, light to moderate pressure when squeezing. The Squeeze is great... but the Micro is totally just as good as the Squeeze... but smaller. Oh, and it has a little more flexibility because it has the intake nipple so you could theoretically use it as an in-line filter. Moreover, this comes with a blue adapter so you can connect it using a gravity system. The reason I'm leaving a review now is because I've always used it on clear Sierra water... but I recently returned from a 3 week trip in Utah. To my amazement, the filter flowed smoothly. I was using a new filter, and I was worried that it was broken because the water flowed so well! The only reason I knew it was working is because mud went in, and clear water came out. I made sure to back-flush the filter after each one of these mud sessions, and eventually it slowed down. After several days of this, I had to flush the filter after each liter. In other words, I'd filter a liter, then back-flush with two syringes, and then do another liter... and back-flush twice. That may seem annoying, but the filter worked the entire trip. Near the end of the trip, the syringe broke! That was OK for me because I have so many syringes from my other Sawyer products. When I got home, I used hot (120F water) to back-flush. This is key. I've had so many Sawyers that I've learned that the warm water helps them regain their flow rate. One thing I want to add is that on all 8 of the Sawyers that I have owned, I've never been able to restore the original flow rate. When these are new, they are amazingly fast. I wish I knew a technique to restore the original flow rate. Therefore, I think that the expected lifespan is a little "generous" on their part. Luckily, they are priced so that I can just buy a new one each year.
Bought this as an upgrade to my kit after using an MSR hand pump. Significant improvement from that filter. I didn’t experience any of the leaking or slow filter issues that others write about. I was sad that this system doesn’t work inline with my platypus bladder out of the box and needs adapters. I had issues with getting the bag to fill without a separate cup to pour into it. My specific water sources were slow running springs. For a bit more money I could have gotten the sawyer original, I would go with that option if I could go back. The weight saving and function doesn’t really explain buying this.I used it on the AT in Shenandoah NP.
