AVOID: Extremely painful splinters

I don’t know if I got a defective pair or what happened, but after wearing these shoes twice, I have gotten six splinters from the soles: one in my right foot and five in my left. Because of the thin, flexible, almost fibrous, splintery sole material, the splinters are much harder to remove than a more firm wood or glass splinter. I haven’t been able to get all of the material out of my foot, which means I can’t climb and can barely even walk, since they’re getting inflamed and potentially infected. Seriously, Scarpa?!? How did these make it past your quality control?

I've been using these for 3 months about 4 times a week at my local gym. As a new climber I wanted to purchase my own shoes (rentals sounded gross). I have no regrets with this shoe. I got my street size because I wanted something comfortable. They did stretch a tiny bit after being broken in, so maybe consider downsizing a half-size if you want something more snug. That being said, my street size fits fine and I can wear them for 2+ hours at a time without pain. I've worked my way up to V5-7 and have climbed 5.10 in these shoes.

I have used this shoe both indoor and outdoor. It is my go to chili climbing shoe. Works great for multi pitch. You are able to feel the comtours of the rock under your foot. Grip is fully adequate. Durability is moderate. Weight is excellent for a mid priced shoe. The only disadvantage is that the shoe will not protect your foot and dont even try to crack climb in these babies.

Contrary to advice, do not downsize

I'm a beginner climber, around the 5.10 level. These are my first pair of climbing shoes. Spent a few days indoors, and two days outdoors including a 10 p alpine route with them. For sneakers, hiking, and mountaineering boots, I typically wear a 41 or 41.5. I got these shoes in a 41.5, which exerts a bit of a squeeze on both my heel and toe but without having my entire foot bent into a banana.Observations after breaking them in:- Heels dig into my tendons. Supremely uncomfortable- My front toe gets crushed way too much after a couple hours in these- Where this shoe fails in comfort, I feel it delivers in performance. I feel quite confident with these on.- Pretty good at toe and edge holds. Smearing, not so much. Heels, they'd do well if it wasn't painfully ... MoreI'm a beginner climber, around the 5.10 level. Definitely Better than Renting or Borrowing

These shoes are quite comfortable for multiple hours at the climbing gym. My feet are a bit longer and narrower than most AMAB people, and these shoes accommodate that with relative ease. I wear a Men's 9 for most of my shoes, from work boots to Van's, however when trying these on in store I found that a Men's 8.5 gave me the fit needed for my toes to be able to work on holds. I have only had these shoes for a few weeks now, however, they seem to be durable, and give plenty of grip on artificial walls and wood walls. They do tend to curl my pinkie toe in just a bit more than I'd like, but this is pretty minor. As other reviewers have mentioned, the blue suede will stain your toes. It washes off with soapy water in the shower, and isn't that strong of a stain ... MoreThese shoes are quite comfortable for multiple hours at the climbing gym. Great Beginner Shoe
27 March 2023

After an (extremely painful) 2-week breaking in process, this shoes are actually insanely comfortable and fit me like a glove. I would say, unfortunately, given how much they loosen up, make sure they're painfully tight at purchase haha. As other people have mentioned, they also stain your feet blue, but this is not really a big deal if you bathe regularly. Im climbing at V4 and they always rise to the challenge, but i'd imagine that at higher levels their ability to edge very small holds will probably taper off. Very happy with this purchase!

Great Climbing Shoe for Beginner
11 May 2021

This pair of climbing shoes has been amazing as my first pair I ever bought as a climber. Currently, it's been about 4 months and 25-30 times I've worn them, and have not noticed a single thing wrong with them. The shoes are very comfortable and I have no trouble wearing them for hours at a time. They feel great and secure on all indoor footholds I have encountered. The only possible downside would be the blue ink getting on your feet after climbing for a while, but if your feet don't sweat too much then this really shouldn't be an issue.Overall, this is a great shoe. Although it was a more pricy shoe at $110, I really have no regrets as it is a great beginner's shoe. For fitting, I'd recommend finding the size that fits snug to your foot, and then getting .5 cm ... MoreThis pair of climbing shoes has been amazing as my first pair I ever bought as a climber. Great fit for Greek feet
3 December 2021

I tried on every pair of shoes in my local REI, plus a pair of 5.10 NIADs I ordered from REI, and these were the only ones that matched my foot shape. I have Greek feet (middle toes longer than the big toe) and a narrow heel.I am happy with these shoes. The edging is great. The rubber isn't very sticky, so smearing is so-so. My old Tarantulace smear better even after breaking in the Scarpas. They aren't terribly aggressive, so they work well for full days at the crag but may not be ideal for short bouldering sessions or steep overhangs. I find the Scarpas perform better outdoors on rock - I was really surprised what they could do on RRG sandstone slab routes. I feel like the Tarantulace perform better in the gym, but I prefer the fit of the Scarpas and wear them ... MoreI tried on every pair of shoes in my local REI, plus a pair of 5.10 NIADs I ordered from REI, and these were the only ones that matched my foot shape. I feel like the Tarantulace perform better in the gym, but I prefer the fit of the Scarpas and wear them all the time. They are better for training footwork, too.If it helps, I can wear just about any Adidas size 12 street shoe, but haven't found any other brand (Nike, Reebok, etc.) that fit my foot shape. A pair of size 46.5 Helix fit my feet just about perfectly. Next best fit in the REI store was a pair of Tarantulace, followed by La Sportiva Finale. Nothing else in stock in my size at that particular store felt like something I would want to climb in.Yes, they turn my feet and toes a little blue when they get sweaty. That's not the worst-looking part of my feet and doesn't bother me. Besides, you can proclaim your superior climbing fashion by telling people that you paint your toes blue to match your gear.

Runs small
9 September 2024

Really was excited to try this shoe for guiding and long casual routes. Unfortunately it is WAY smaller than I anticipated even ordering my comfort size in comparable Sportiva shoes. I would suggest ordering maybe 1.5 or two sizes larger than your normal in Sportiva. It looks to be well made but as you all know they cannot be returned or exchanged so make sure you know your exact size.

Wide foot? Buy this shoe! Embrace the blue.
1 May 2021

Hi after reading the reviews posted I thought the best I could add is that this shoe fits a wide (D/E foot) better than the other MEC stock I tried on. I’m a lower grade outdoor sport climber so a generalist shoe at a good price fitting my freaky feet are my buying criteria. I don’t belay/lounge in them so I guess that’s an effective prophylactic against the blue foot others have mentioned in reviews. I also like the lace ups, which I find accommodate high arches better than wide Velcro straps. They even thoughtfully threw in a comfy padded tongue - nice touch! The leather uppers are a little taller than other shoes, which adds a bit of warmth for early/late days outside. All around a solid shoe, especially if your feet are “unique”.
