The surface should be clean, dry and dust-free so the tape sticks properly. Lay tape onto the surface, pressing down as you go. Dont stretch the tape, or it may lift or break. Press tape down firmly with a smooth edge, like a putty knife or credit card. Wait about 30 to 60 minutes before you begin painting. Wait until the paint is dry to the touch before removing the tape. Cheque the paint can for the manufacturer's dry times. Use a putty knife or razor blade to score along the edge of the tape. This prevents paint from being pulled up with the tape and from cracking along the paint line. Taking your time, lift up the painters tape and pull it back on itself, removing at a 45 degree angle. If adhesive sticks to the surface, try a 90-degree angle. Youll get a sharp, clean line and a professional looking paint job!

This the best tape to use if you need to tape over recently painted surfaces such as walls or trim. It goes on easy and comes off easy without taking paint with it. The edges are sharp and if attached security to the surface no paint will bleed under the tape onto the protected surface. It's not the only use I have for this tape but i use it mostly for edge protection. I highly recommend.

3M tape is garbage! The description claims "...and freshly painted walls (painted at least 24 hours ago)...". BUT, as seen from the photo, the tape, when pulled off as instructed by 3M, pulled-off a portion of the paint from the wall!! This wall was painted about 6 weeks ago, so plenty of time for paint to become fully cured! Now, I have to fix this mess that 3M caused! This could delay my call for final inspection by the cities building inspector. DON'T RECOMMEND, THANKS FOR THE MESS, 3M!!

I love this tape. I had been searching forever for a tape that is sticky enough to keep my paper stuck to my wooden painting board, but not so sticky that it tears my paper - and I finally found it! I didn't want to post this review until I'd tried the tape for a few months, in case it decided to fail me after a month or two. But this tape has been a workhorse for me for the last several months of heavy watercolor painting, both in the studio and en plein air. I paint on Arches, Saunders Waterford and Fabriano Artistico (all hot pressed, although I do very occasionally skip over to Arches cold pressed) and so far it hasn't torn or pilled any of them. It's also been great about not lifting on the paper as a lot of tapes do, which allows paint to get under there and ... MoreI love this tape. Hello Scotch - I am a fine artist who works in watercolor. My painting surface is high-quality (very expensive) watercolor paper. Before I begin a painting, it is necessary for me to mask out the edges of my painting’s composition with masking or some other tape. The problem is that some tapes can remove or even tear the paper while it’s being removed. I am now using your Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape 2080 which eliminates this problem. Does this tape come in white as opposed to pale violet? Tape of any color other than white when applied to a painting’s parameter conflicts visually with watercolor paint selections I need to make throughout the painting process. I read some reviews that this stuff is too sticky. My experience is the opposite. The tape doesn’t stick! It doesn’t stick to my brand new engineered hardwood floor (which I cleaned first). It doesn’t stick to primed shoe molding. I had my painters use it instead of blue tape to protect the polyurethane coating on my floor and all the edges that were taped down are rolling up because the tape doesn’t have enough stickiness to overcome the force of the brown paper rolling back up.
I regret not reading reviews about this tape before using. I spent a lot of time prepping and painting my walls and waiting a few days to let the walls dry. I used this tape to cut in the ceiling to get a nice clean line. When removing the tape, it peeled the paint underneath it. What a mess and ruined an otherwise perfect job. DO NOT USE THIS TAPE! There’s nothing delicate about it!
This is the best tape I've used for painting. The purple is much more neutral than the bright blue or green ones, but still enough color that you can see your edges. I've used it on various qualities of watercolor paper and sketchbooks and it releases better than most others I've tried. If you leave it on for a long time, or use on low quality cellulose paper, just be sure to use a heat tool to loosen the adhesive and remove slowly. If it's only on for a few hours or even a couple of days, it comes off nicely if removed slowly and at an angle.
I routinely purchase this 3M/Scotch brand delicate surface tape from Home Depot to use for all sorts of painting and other projects. Having used generic and Frog brand painting tapes in the past with terrible results, I don't even bother looking at other brands of tapes and instead head straight for the trusted 3M branded rolls. The delicate surface tape is designed for making very sharp paint lines on surfaces that may be damaged by using regular masking tape or the regular 3M blue painters tape. However, instead of having multiple rolls for multiple reasons, I have found no reason at all to use anything other than this model 2080 tape for all of my projects.PACKAGING: Very basic, just a simple plastic wrapping. However, instead of having multiple rolls for multiple reasons, I have found no reason at all to use anything other than this model 2080 tape for all of my projects.PACKAGING: Very basic, just a simple plastic wrapping. There isn't a lot of information printed on the roll of tape as this product is mostly understood how it's to be used.QUALITY: 3M is a trusted name and generally is the 'cadillac' of whatever it is you are shopping for. The cost is usually a bit more but you do get what you pay for and I am happy to pay extra to get the quality I receive from this tape. Delicate surface or not, I take time and make sure it is adhered properly with sharp mitered corners where appropriate and then I ready for painting. One tip that will serve you well is to go around the perimeter of the tape with your brush and just barely wet the edge of it with paint. Do not goop a large amount of paint along the edges of this or any tape and expect it to hold the paint back. It won't. So take your time and barely wet it and then after about a half hour of dry time, you can come back and paint along it with the full amount of paint that's appropriate for your project. The reason you barely wet it the first time is so that you allow the paint to bond with the edge of the tape and not seep under it. This is how you get such crisp lines when you pull the tape off. Pull the tape off when appropriate (there are multiple helpful articles under the Info and Guides section of this webpage) and at the proper angle. If the paint begins to come off with the tape, there are ways to deal with that such as using a razor blade to cut the bond or consider not gooping up large amounts of paint up to and on top of the tape - or buy better quality paint.RECOMMENDATION: Consider using the delicate surface tape for all of your projects in which you desire crisp paint lines. It is the thinnest of the painters tapes on the market, yet has great adhesion and release properties. It's well worth the extra cost to get a better result.PRO's: Great adhesion, can be left on the surface for up to 60 days, comes in multiple widths, seals out paint if you 'prime' it first.Con's: It is more costly than other tapes and depending on the surface, may not adhere as well as regular painters tape.
Obviously any specialty tape is going to be more expensive than the standard blue painters tape, but this is well worth the $$ if you want to protect your new paint job! I chose to not tape all my walls and ceilings when repainting and free handed cutting in. As a result I had a few spots of wall paint on the ceiling. It made far more sense to me to touch up a few spots on my ceiling vs taping off a 2200 sq ft house- twice (once for walls then again for ceiling) However my concern was for my beautiful new paint job. So I did my research and pros suggested using this product to touch up and even out lines. PROS - does not remove any paint or damage the wall in anyway when removed! Not even freshly painted walls (i let them dry for a couple days before I applied the gap) - paint does not seep under nor bleed - adheres fairly well- not super sticky but absolutely does the job CONS - cost - thin - see through- this make applying it tricky as the tape curls up and sticks to itself but in NO WAY does the thinned effect the job it does HIGHLY RECOMMEND having one roll of this tape on hand when painting, especially when doing an entire house.
I use it to tape down watercolor work and keep a clean border for a professional look. I especially like it because it does a great job at keeping any spread off the edges. Works great! And a nice wide width, perfect size for me. But it does pull up some if you're using lower priced watercolor paper....be sure to peel back rather than lift off.
