The way Sea to Summit packages these makes them more susceptible to failure.I purchased an 8L and a 20L today. They both have a plastic strip across the top to assist with rolling and closing of the bag. When testing their fitment for an upcoming trip, I was having an issue packing the 8L. In trying to flatten out this plastic piece, it snapped inside, and created a sharp corner that will only wear away the bag from the inside.I then examined the 20L, and I see that the plastic strip inside of that one is already stressed from being folded so that Sea to Summit could save on packaging.

These bags are perfect for keeping gear dry and protected from the elements. I use this size not only for backpacking but I put my phone and similar items in it at the beach to keep them more protected. Maybe not its usual purpose but effective. Not totally waterproof if your gear goes overboard but plenty useful against light rain and spills. Buckle seems light but I haven’t had any problems with it yet. For me, this bag does exactly what it claims.

HEADS UP - this isn't the kindest review courtesy of my lack of sleep. I hope this comes as helpful critique that ensures the future implementation of customer design is the highest quality possible but I'm sure with my current position and short fuse this is going to be a rough read. After 6 nights on this pad I hate this product and cannot stand to take it on the AT or any future adventure. I know y'all put great effort into the engineering but by God this is the worst mat I've ever slept on. I prefer to sleep on the tent floor. The sheer noise it makes was enough to have woken up my fellow campers and the lack of traction on it creates such an uncomfortable balancing act just to stay onboard the mat I felt I was riding a lubed up surfboard on a gliding magic ... MoreHEADS UP - this isn't the kindest review courtesy of my lack of sleep. I've used various types of Sea to Summit dry bags (various thickness of material, regular dry bags vs eVent + eVent compression bags) for years, and have never had a problem. When gearing up for a recent backcountry kayaking trip, I decided to replace several of my dry bags with new ones; I've not had any issues with my older bags but they've seen heavy use so I figured it was time to retire them. I saw that the new Sea to Summit bags come with replaceable buckles, but didn't think much of it; I've never had to replace a buckle on my existing drybags. I'm not so sure now that the replaceable buckle is a good idea. Twice in the span of a 5 day trip a screw ended up coming loose, causing the buckle to fall off of the dry bag. Obviously this renders the dry bag useless, as it can't hold out water if it can't seal. This happened to 2 different drybags, so it didn't seem like I got just one dud. Thankfully both times the screws fell out in the tent and I was able to find them; had they fallen out on the beach I'd be out of luck. I was also thinking that, as the dry bags themselves don't come with a replacement buckle, having a replaceable buckle will only help you out if you've bought a spare and brought it along with you. So most people are likely replacing buckles at home and not in the field. The bags themselves performed admirably as always, with only the new buckle design being a drawback. However, it's a potentially a pretty big drawback.
Bought this last minute for a 3 day backpacking trip (3L size) to stuff my day food in the outside mesh pocket of my pack, so I wouldn't have to go inside my pack to find my food while on the trail. It's a great size for various items and fit easily in the outside pocket. Stayed dry during the rain, easy to fold over and keep secure. Love this little bag. Might get more for other items.
Generally I've had good experience with STS gear. I have an number of their ultrasil stuff sacks, which have performed as expected. One recent issue was a screw came loose on the newer sack that touts a "field replaceable" buckle. Great concept but a screw fell out of my 2L dry sack buckle and was lost on the first night of a 7 day trip. There was no misstreatment or heavy use, opening and closing once or twice a day and kept in my pack for the majority of the day. I checked my other dry sacks and screws were loose on 2 other dry sacks. Thankfully, I did not encounter conditions where the fully sealed bag was essential. For the price of these dry sacks STS should include extra screws with them. I gave this 2 stars since a dry sack that can't close isn't a dry sack.

Currently, Altitude Sports have not updated their photos of the Atoll Blue, Tarragon Green, and Spicy Orange. However, you will most likely receive the new edition, the Sea to Summit logo, liter size, buckle, and base will not be coloured in grey.Weight / Water Resistance:The Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Bag is lighter weight than the Sea to Summit Light Weight Dry Bag. The Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Bag uses 30D Nylon and the Sea to Summit Light Weight Dry Bag uses 70D Nylon. The 70D Nylon is thicker, therefore, making the material heavier. The weight is also doubled. However, the 70D Nylon is more water resistance. You will have to consider the "weight" to "duration of water resistance" ratio. I personally prefer the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Bag (30D Nylon) over the Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag (70D Nylon) because the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Bag (30D Nylon) will still be water resistance for over several long hours.
These bags are very versatile. I’m not a camper nor a hiker. I bought them to stow wet/dirty laundry when traveling. Recently I was very thrilled to use the 5 liter bag to transport ice packs and cold beverages for a school field trip. It’s not meant to keep the items cold but it prevented the “sweat” from getting the other items I was carrying in my backpack from getting wet. These would be great for a day at the beach or the pool. If you want to have items safe from a drop in the water, you must be sure to roll down the top at least three times, squeezing out the air as you go and then secure the buckle. I bought several for family members as well because I was so pleased with the bags I bought. For me, the 8L is a better size for my post vacation dirty laundry.
This is my favourite accessory for hiking and travel. I've used it for the following purposes:- Sleeping bag storage- Clothing storage- Washing clothes- Food bag- Pillow- Short term eskyI've found 13L to be the sweet spot size. It fits my 750g down sleeping bag easily, though I imagine it would be able to fit bags up to around 1.5kg down or 1kg synthetic. I keep my bag, mat and clothes in there to keep them dry which means no pack liner required. On travels, it's great to keep your dirty clothes separate from the rest of your stuff and doubles into a 'washing machine' too. Much better than sink-washing. All you need is a water source and a little soap/detergent and it saves you the time/money of going to a laundromat. 13L will hold a pair of pants and a few ... MoreThis is my favourite accessory for hiking and travel. Much better than sink-washing. All you need is a water source and a little soap/detergent and it saves you the time/money of going to a laundromat. 13L will hold a pair of pants and a few t-shirts easily. Can be used as a pillow - it will hold air if locked up like a balloon, but it's comfier to stuff something like a puffer jacket or fleece inside, and you can simply wrap a t-shirt or similar around if you prefer it to the feel of silicone. It's also a decent makeshift esky for picnics or the beach as it will hold ice without leaking and keep your drinks cold for a few hours. Conversely, I've also put it inside eskies to store food that I don't want getting inundated with water. It's lightweight and flexible, but durable enough for most purposes. Never had one break, but I'm not hurling it around either. If you plan to use one in situations where it might get a few knocks (watersports etc.), better to get the 'lightweight' version which uses a 70 denier nylon instead of the 30 denier of the ultra-sil.
These bags are wonderful when you first get it. But, over time the waterproof tape used to seal the seams peals off and the bag is just as good as any other storage bag. I filed a warranty claim when I first noticed the issue and have not heard back from Sea to Summit for over a year now. I filed a second warranty claim 6 months ago for several bags that have now had the same issue and still have not heard anything. NO MORE SEA TO SUMMIT purchases for me!
