I always had great success with Seagate drives all those years. Some have 10 years old. They just become too small. This drive is a model of evolution. They are thin, light with huge capacity. Mine (1TB) clock at 185MB/sec read and 165MB/sec write with Crystaldisk (500mB test). I have a brand new system with a Ryzen 2200G. Of course SSD beat then easily in performance but at this point, the good old hard drive is the most cost effective solution for large capacity. It seems to me that the downward flash ram price has slow down now, so HDD are still relevant.

I always purchase Seagate for spinning hard drives. Some do fail more than others. Mostly it's due to bad sectors. But, I cans still perform data recovery from them. I use to own Western Digital hard drives. They usually have a more... "consistent" read/write performance compared to a Seagate drive. However, when a WD drive failed, it's usually a dead motor or hard drive clicks. This would make them virtually impossible (for me) to perform data retrieval. Other brands that I've tried like Hitachi weren't too bad. Your experience might be different. So,.. I would stick with whatever brand works for you. Again, I purchase hard drives based on price and value. This purchase seems to "fit the bill".
It is a 1TB HDD. I have four of these (and four of the old model half as big). All work well and do what I want them to, which is to be in a lightly used RAID. There are other models more suitable for heavily loaded RAIDs, but these are fine for light use. The oldest new one is a three or four years old and still going strong, as are the secondhand ones. The data SMART shows they are all running well. These are slightly old models, without the cost-cutting stull which has afflicted some of the newer ones, which reports indicate have not been a success in some uses. If building a RAID in future I'll use the IronWolf range, which have not been cost-cut yet.

A loud (faster spinning) drive would mask that noise a bit, but this one being otherwise quiet really slaps you in the face with the noise when the drive is active. According to their technical specs, this thing is dead silent, but mount it to a case and the vibration turns it into a speaker, amplifying the head noise. You really need to suspension mount it with foam or similar. Performance would start okay for quite a while, then go horribly, horribly slow for a long stall out, before getting back to normal speeds again. I've tracked it down to the software I have probing the drive's temperature. Either there's a bug in the drive electronics, or it's just so underpowered that requesting that SMART data while the ... It's horrid, and not something I've had any issue with, with other brands of drives. The read/write performance is pretty disappointing. An 8TB WD Red (not ""pro"" either) with similar RPM rate, reads/writes 33% faster than this 8TB Segate. That's no small difference, but a huge bottleneck when backing up or restoring your data. I'd put up with it, if not for all the other problems. The warranty terms are pretty nasty, too. Not only is it just a 2 year warranty, but they have strict limits on how much data you can read/write to your drive in the warranty period. If you happen to backup your drive a lot, or regularly zero/scrub it for secure data deletion, or anything else like that, you can find your warranty void much earlier, for no good reason. And you'll only discover that after having paid to ship your drive back to them. And for all these drawbacks... Seagate drives are barely any cheaper than WD drives. I have no affiliation with either WD or Seagate. I used to prefer Seagate drive, many years ago, but they seem to have really given up and fallen behind their one major competitor. Even as I have issues with WD drives and decide to try Seagate again, I find they've only gotten worse along the way. AVOID!
Great product. Went in easy. No issues...My issue, if you're an amateur you'll be lost. A little guide online PDF explaining the process of reinstalling your OS and downloading chipset drivers and other assorted WIFI, graphics and Bluetooth drivers Those are the basics on new rigs. I was completely lost, lucky I have techy friends. Other than that, thing is lighting fast, huge storage, great price. Got to me in 2 business days. Shipping a little steep, ad a USPS option will get that figure down. 👍
I have gone through 4 of these. The first was a gift and lasted just about 2 years before failing, the second one I bought and failed instantly. the 3rd that was a replacement for the one I bought lasted a couple months and the 4th one I received via warranty also failed instantly. All arm reader issues! Do NOT waste your money on this model!

I have always had very good luck with the reliability with Seagate drives and after 4 hours of read and write non stop tests I don't expect this one to fail. Write speed impressed me so much so I had to do it a couple of times. I was coping from a OCZ pciex4 ssd so read speeds are about 795MB/s limiting the read bottleneck. Write speeds on a 7gb file started at 320MB/s and tapered off to 165MB/s for the last few seconds and coping the same file back to the ssd was 1.5TB/s at first then dropping to 280MB/s for the last third of the write suggesting this Drive could maintain a 280MB/s read speed and a 165 MB/s write speed. Not bad for a $50 drive. Worth mentioning is this drive is thinner then most drives and lighter also, suggesting it is using high density platters, thus fewer of them. Update 11/16/16 Sorry to say the drive failed a week after this first review. Tried on both a PC with windows and a Mac. Under windows seagates "seatools for windows" would just hang trying to id the drive after windows finally booted after it seemed like forever trying to id the drive. Unders Mac os 10.9 disk utility came back with a failure as unable to read the last block. Also tried to format with a windows 10 setup cd, also failed. Went to Seagates website and did a RMA. Found out I had to pay return shipping and if they don't find anything wrong then they will also charge me for return shipping to me. Very poor in my opinion. When a product fails I believe the manufacturer should be paying shipping both ways especially after less then a month.
