This is the best 5TB external drive that I’ve found. It’s significantly cheaper and much more convenient than those that require their own power source. This one is plug and play, and the speed is as good or better than any other external drive that I have (including 2 that have their own power source). The construction feels solid, and the footprint is small—basically the same size as the 2TB drive and slightly less than twice as thick. As with all storage devices, failure is a risk, but so far, I’ve had better luck with Seagate than other manufacturers.
Although I've had the drive only for a week or so, it has nearly 2TB of data files and have no negative issues to report. it is performing as advertised except that it idles when not in use and takes a bit of time before it is ready to read or write files. Annoying but not fatal; similar to Toshiba's and Western Digital's USB HDD. Seagate's Backup Plus 5TB drive that I also own is a much better performer in that it doesn't idle when not in use and, thus far, hasn't failed in the six months I've used it.
Out of the box, this is absolutely the slowest drive I've ever owned. 19 hours to transfer 1TB of photos and it kept freezing. Tried transferring same files to a 2 TB Seagate drive and it took less than 2 hours. Not certain if this specific one is a defective drive or if all the 5TB's are this slow....

I bought this hard drive as a back up to my computer and to store games. I initially saved one computer game on it and then stored it away in a protective box. When I pulled the hard drive out to use it, the unit comes on and then turns off. After researching it says the I cannot retrieve any info I have on it now will it work and I need a new one. I only used this a few times. I have Western Digitals that are older than this and they work perfectly. I will never purchase a Seagate external drive again.
Absolute garbage drive. It lasted several days beyond the 1 year warranty and then started clicking and died. It is not even used as a portable - it just sits on a flat surface. Pure unadulterated TRASH.
popped it out of the case and put into Ubiquiti Cloud Key Gen2 Plus to upgrade storage... works great. HOWEVER, don't forget to backup the orig 1TB unit so you can restore the system to this new device or your Cloud Key must be reprogrammed in total.(buying this in the case and throwing away the case is much cheaper than buying the bare drive -- go figure.
