A Trusted NAS Drive with good specifications.

I bought this to put into my Synology DS1618+ NAS to expand the drives from 4 to 5. The existing 4 drives are 6TB running SHR. I purchased the same type of drive as I have had no issues with the existing drives and will eventually after finishing some tidying up of files will add the new 8TB drive to expand the SHR. Although I am a home user my many hobbies mean that I store a lot of files. I also run another QNAP NAS which also has the same drives. These two NAS systems along with some USB 4TB external drives store and backup my important files from my 3 windows PC’s and my Raspberry Pi’s.

Pros: Decent capacity for the price compared to other manufacturers. Seem to keep up pace with my 7200rpm drives, despite being only 5400rpm. This is also good as they consume less power.Cons: No issues here so far. Can't really comment on reliability as the drives have only been up 24/7 for a few days now.

Pros: The packaging was impressive: no plastics, but recyclable cardboard in an intricate form that protected the drives well. The drives themselves were well finished, screw threads clean and free of swarf, all excellent. I've only had them for a few months, but they have been quiet and fault free.Cons: I changed policy from 7,200 drives to these. The difference in speed is not noticeable in normal use, but it certainly was when transferring 2TB data to each one. Faster NAS drives would be something to look forward to in future.

Jeremy's review of Seagate IronWolf Pro ST4000NE001 - Hard drive - 4 TB - internal - 3.5 - SATA 6Gb/s - 7200 rpm - buffer_ 128 MB - with 2 years Rescue Data Recovery Service Plan
15 June 2022

Pros: The company offers a two year recovery on failed hard drives but the unit is extremely reliable that it’ll never get used. When you compare the cost per Tb, the 16Tb drive is inexpensive. (I tried to post the price paid but the review company insisted I remove it)Cons: I use the 14Tb drives in my Drobo 5D3 DAS drive and the 16Tb drives in my Synology DS1621+ NAS drive. The drives aren’t quiet like SSDs though each drive enclosure has additional fan noise too. Once the SSDs come down in price, that will be the big improvement but these Iron Wolf Pro drives are the way forward.

12 July 2021

Pros: Fast, reliable and easy to install. Great bandwidth even under stress.Cons: Price. I understand there is a global shortage of hard disks but that's not my fault !The price of the discs has risen so much and is unrealistic.

7 August 2021

Pros: Seems to run in a NAS at a reasonable operating temperature (even in a heatwave)Cons: Not sure if it is just Seagate but along with a couple of other Seagate drives that I have it produces quite a lot of chatter although it spins fairly quietly. I have ended up having to place my NAS in a cupboard because of that. Thankfully I did plan for that possibility

15 June 2022

Pros: Despite hearing from multiple sources, the drives themselves aren't very loud at all. Your case fans have a good chance of drowning out the noise anyway. Performance on Unraid at least is very good and didn't really require a cache SSD as seems fast enough. Good stuff!

13 February 2023

Pros: NoneCons: Too noisy, I replaced them after only two days, we can't live with the noise. Can't rate anything else because I didn't use them long enough.

Pros: In my experience, a good cheap drive with great reliability. You don't always need larger drives !Cons: Nothing to improve, although we all want cheaper ! LOL

Pros: Great value for a 5400 rpm drive. CMR is important for NAS users.Cons: Come with minimum packing. Will see how long these disks survive.
