Straightforward install, but unlike the video, I ran the wires inside the padding, and simply placed the speakers on the surface of the pads that cover my ears--there is velcro on the back of the speakers for that purpose. I don't routinely listen to music anyway (after the 28 dB noise reduction and fidelity attenuation of the foam ear plugs, I wonder why bother, right?), but have done so just for trying it. Simple and easy to activate buttons/interface, looks very robust. I like the mounted mic and boom options, and used the mounted one on the very front edge of my cheek pad. Thank you Revzilla for the assist and all the useful reviews.

My goal was simple, something to play MP3s without a cord to be destroyed by the wind. Installation was quick with no alterations required to the helmet. The wired mic and speakers had plenty of cord to place where needed.Pairing this unit with a phone and tablet was very simple, though it will only play one Media source at a time so to use both I had to limit the phone to Phone audio only. The unit does have the ability to preset the first ten stations it detects though I have not used that feature yet. A simple push and twist on the dial changes stations quickly and the headset reads out the frequency so you know which station you landed on.Sound quality is okay for me, no static, pops, cracks, or any other distracting noise over my music. The volume is loud enough for me to hear the lyrics while going 70 with a wind noisy helmet.I am a solo rider, so I have not used the intercom feature.Phone calls are quick to answer aith only a slight delay as the BT connects (if not already playing media through the phone) and the other end reports being unable to hear any wind noise despite me testing going up through school zone to interstate speeds. Making a phone call is a single push of a button to activate the phone's voice commands. The only cons I have noticed are 1) the ringer changes based on what I am listening to. No music = loud constant ring. MP3 = music cut out entirely, loud ring. FM = music turns off during ring, back on in between rings so the music pulses, very very soft ring. Sounds more like you are losing the station. 2) having limited buttons means some features use the same button depending on mode. I haven't found a way to control the phone while listening to the FM. So I turn off the FM before initiating a phone call.

This is an absolutely great product. The rotary dial is great, the ability and flexibility to clip it to either of my helmets with minimal fuss is awesome, it looks great and having FM radio is awesome (since my mobile carrier isn't great and getting internet radio is more suspect than I like it to be).I would only say that I wish it had a couple of more dedicated buttons (maybe one for the FM feature). Also, it would be nice if the device manager software was more like Garmins' device manager software (aka, more polished, more professional looking, can automatically detect devices, etc). It's weird that I need to tell it the model before it proceeds to identify it. But this is minor quibble.Right now, I'm using it to pair my phone and to listen to FM radio. I'm currently working on a way to hear my auto GPS' audio (Garmin nuvi 2595LMT).And that is the warning. The GPS feature on this headset will only work on those GPS that have the AD2P Bluetooth feature, which none of the current Garmin nuvi models have. The Bluetooth on the current Garmin nuvi models only has the HFP feature to pair it with a Bluetooth phone. Some older Garmin nuvi models (like the 765T) did have this AD2P feature and those will work. Otherwise, you have to get their terrible Zumo model for the Sena to pair with a GPS. I'm currently looking at a way to connect a BT AD2P adapter to the speaker wiring on my Garmin nuvi. Once I can get this to work, I will be a VERY happy camper.BTW, I had purchased this before realizing it wouldn't pair with my GPS (my excitement over being able to hear my auto GPS blinded me). I just assumed that because it said it paired with Bluetooth, that this was all I needed to know. So I've learned that just because something says Bluetooth doesn't mean it will work (since there's also different versions of Bluetooth). It was a hard lesson learned. And RevZilla gave me incredible support when I told them of my story, which is something I've rarely seen anywhere else except mom & pop stores. So RevZilla will have a good portion of my business until they do something to make me change that (which I doubt).

Horrible FM Recetion
23 September 2018

This is a nice little unit, However NOT WORTH WHAT THEY COST!!!, The Fm tuner is extremely lackluster in reception (nothing like your car). The reception of unit to unit is not great either (okay if you are on flat ground with NO obstructions (like Trees) ). It is fine for close quarters and i suppose the FM would work better in the city or directly under an FM transmission tower. For country use is lackluster! The unit does not allow you to listen to FM and talk to other riders in your group at the same time, FM has to be turned off to talk to anyone. The voice prompt volume is to low when riding and can not be adjusted separately from regular main volume. I wish I knew if their other models were better. This one is a FAIL! Needs a bit of effort
8 October 2021

Fiddly to fit, open face helmet with boom mic. A little unpredictable to connect with my brothers 5 year old version. The mic on mine worked fine on intercom but not on phone. I updated the firmware and its fine now. My brother still has five year old firmware, updating his should sort out the fiddly pairing. Once connected, wonderful. Full continuous hands free duplex talk with almost no wind noise, simple phone answering, clear navigation instructions and music from phone

No bass whatsoever
9 December 2018

You can hear everything pretty clearly. I've gone 80mph down the highway and could still hear the music/podcast or whatever. In fact if you turn it up too much it's really loud. My only complaint is that there's absolutely no bass. If you try to use an equalizer on your music app or whatever to turn up the bass, it will be really distorted. And you might just blow the speakers out.Other than that the operation of the device is pretty easy. I only use the Bluetooth for music and calls, or I'll listen to the radio. I haven't needed to use the feature where you link up to other riders so I don't have any input on that.

You will have to keep the instruction manual handy until you memorize all the different controls. Not so easy to control when wearing thick winter gloves.Summary:Overall this is a good product, especially considering the price. It's nice not to be isolated while riding and to be able to handle work and personal calls while on the road. The radio feature is really nice to have for when traffic gets heavy. The Bluetooth connection is strong whether you keep your phone in a handlebar mount or deep inside your saddlebags or backpack. Not sure how this compares to other units, but it's good enough that I'm not interested in trying any others. I'm going to get the speaker/mic kits for all my helmets and take this unit with me whenever I ride.

Sena SMH5-FM

I did not rank durability because my SMH5-FM is still new, but I did ride through a rain shower with no problems. And as for ease of installation, Cycle Gear installed it for free in my new Bell MX-9 Adventure helmet I purchased there. FM radio far exceeded my expectations; reception is as good as a car radio and easy to set up presets. Earplugs are not needed with the MX-9, but I found the radio and phone conversation sounded better wiearing ear plugs and the Sena volume turned high. Not much bass, but good stereo sound at 70 mph and clear phone calls. Syncs with my old iPhone 5c. I haven’t tried intercom, but that should work great if I ever do based on how good phone calls work. Worked great for a few years...
13 February 2020

I used this during my daily commute for years with zero issues. The FM receiver worked well and the Bluetooth connect quickly with a strong, clear signal. It was plenty loud until I upgraded my exhaust. After that I could only faintly hear people during calls and the music wasn't quite as loud. To be expected. My larger issue - perhaps also to be expected - is that the battery is good for nothing now. I'm lucky to get 10 minutes of playtime before I get a low battery alert and it dies. That's after a full night of charging - which is much slower now to full.Overall, I love Sena and may upgrade to a newer product but I wouldn't see the need if the battery performed decently after all these years.

I have no issues hearing this while riding. The speakers fit in the cutouts of my helmet perfectly and routing the wiring was very easy. Pairing the device with my smartphone worked well and I can hear directions / take calls easily. The FM stations come in clearly and I like that the station number is spoken before it starts playing.I'm sure I'll learn the controls eventually but trying to remember all the functions of the device in the context of two buttons makes things very complicated. Pressing each button for various lengths of time, tapping the buttons a specific number of times or using both buttons all do different things.
