Sennelier : Watercolour Paint : Half Pan : Carmine

L'Aquarelle Sennelier has been produced the same way for more than a century using the best pigments and the highest quality Kordofan gum Arabic as a binder. This blend of natural ingredients produces colors that have a smooth, light texture and offer vibrant, colorful hues. The combination of Arabic gum and honey offers an exceptional application quality that produces excellent wash. This base is then mixed with pigments and carefully milled. Sennelier makes sure to wet the pigments in purified water (without mineral salts) for 24 hours before mixing with the binder. This improves the way the colours and the adhesive fuse together, which in turn enhances the full beauty of the colours.

Reference to Sennelier's PV19 Rose Madder Lake. I use a mixed palette as many do for various reasons. I chose this pigment from Sennelier because it does not dull down and have such a drying shift as compared to other brands and in particular Daniel Smith Quinacridone Rose. I use watercolor from Daniel Smith as well as others but for anyone looking for the my favorite lightfast smooth bright Rose color that can creates the most lovely and lively blends then this one is my go to. It just sings. #sweepstakes

I've been wanting to try sennelier watercolors for ages but the $ has always been a sticking point for me. I wouldn't have chosen these particular colors for a sampling (I generally prefer single pigment colors and i wish yellow ochre came with it) but I thought they'd work well enough for trying the brand out. What I liked:-The paints wake up easily Some brands I've played with I have to spray water on them and let it sit for a few minutes before I can get much color. Not so with these, they wake up quickly, almost instantly.-Sumptuous is the first word that comes to mind to describe how luxuriously creamy and rich they are. As with any great quality pigments a little goes a long way. I've only been playing with these for 2 days but I forsee them lasting quite a while. What I'm not so happy about:- the paintbrush. When I first took the cap off the brush my heart sank, the outer rim of bristles had been pushed the wrong way. I immediately wet the brush and tried to reshape them with The Masters soap and I think most of them can be semi repaired but there are some that are still sticking out at a nearly perpendicular angle and I'll probably have to cut them off to be able to use the brush.- the pans aren't level. This really irked me, the box, otherwise decently constructed, is small, so naturally the pans of color are close to one another. The problem is some of them rest in their indent at an angle and rise above the rim, so when I place a couple drops of water on each to wake them the paint runs into other pans of color. This has been especially bad with the French Vermilion and Cinereous Blue. These pans will probably run out first if I leave them as they came because I keep having to blot them with a paper towel or dry brush to fix it.I expected more attention to detail from Sennelier.

I purchased the Sennelier Artists' Watercolor paint in "Brown Pink". after seeing a review of this particular color, which is neither brown nor pink, but found it intriguing that the color lends itself to mixing with other green shades of watercolor to create interesting foliage colors (I'm sure it will be useful for all sorts of other types of compositions other than just landscapes/treescapes). I've not used it extensively yet, but I'll enjoy more experimenting with it. It seems to be ground quite fine and creates very smooth washes.

Excellent product -- reliable and of high quality
22 July 2023

Sennelier is my go-to for watercolors, and this particular purchase of good old Titanium White was as satisfactory as all my other Sennelier purchases. It unfailingly produces a rich, colorfast result, and is superb when used straight out of the tube for highlights, etc. It's more expensive than many other watercolors, but it's worth it. Sometimes you just get what you pay for. I highly recommend this particular tube of paint, as well as all others produced by Sennelier.

My Go-To Brand
11 July 2024

I use this brand of watercolor (along with other brands as well) for traditional painting techniques. The inclusion of honey in the formula allows the color to re-wet more easily than other brands and tends to produce more even washes as well. The color strength is more than what most artists painting realism would need, and mixes very well to create a believable palette for any subject matter.

Nice value and intro to Sennelier half pans
23 April 2021

I've been holding off on buying Sennelier paints because of their price point but since they were discounted nicely I decided to splurge and get the 12+6 half-pan set along with some tubes to round out the set. These are beautiful, transparent colors that activate with no effort at all. I'm happy to add Sennelier to my collection of artist-quality watercolors. If I had any critical feedback on this particular set its that I'm not fond of one of the bonus colors containing PW (the Cinerous Blue). Why on earth add on single color that was like that when the rest don't contain white? I also felt this set lacked a good pink/magenta color and a good transparent warm yellow so those were a couple of my tube additions that I purchased. That said, this is a great value and ... MoreI've been holding off on buying Sennelier paints because of their price point but since they were discounted nicely I decided to splurge and get the 12+6 half-pan set along with some tubes to round out the set. Quality palette and an excellent value.

I only say "really nice" because I haven't tried enough other brands to make a fair comparison - these are delightful to work with! Beautiful colors that mix and blend smoothly with bright, beautiful pigments. The tin is slender and solid, portable while still being sturdy and large enough to tuck a few brushes in for convenience, and it's perhaps a little too comfortable to balance using the integrated ring (I have a very interesting stripe of sunburn from outer elbow to inner wrist after forgetting to put on sunscreen before painting in the back garden...)Also it works out to an average of about $3.45/half pan. I really can't argue with that value. My one quibble with it is that I don't see an immense value/shade difference between phtalo and cinereous blue and ... MoreI only say "really nice" because I haven't tried enough other brands to make a fair comparison - these are delightful to work with! Sennelier Half-Pan Watercolor Set
5 February 2024

This is the MOST WONDERFUL set of half-pan watercolors I've ever used. It has all the bright, vibrant, colors an artist would ever need plus plenty of mixing area. I just LOVE it. The price was definitely worth it as I will continue to use it for years.

Sennelier watercolors are lovely to use
21 October 2023

I have been using Sennelier tube watercolors for several years in floral and bird paintings, I bought the 12+ 6 tray as an affordable way to try out the pans. Were I to select the colors I would not have included those made of multiple pigments as I prefer single pigment paints; also I am not sure of usefulness of both paynes grey and ivory black. That said, the paints handle very nicely and rewet immediately; they also layer very well. No quality complaints. The palette has room to add several more colors and has plenty mixing area, also the pan tray comes out to give even more mixing area.

brilliant color provides a wide range of tints
26 December 2016

Strong, brilliant color comes off the pan easily, probably due to the paint's honey content. I see much the same effect with M. Graham watercolors, which also incorporate honey. Because the color is strong they dilute to a wide range of tints as you add more water. You can easily go from strong, dark tones to light, effervescent tints with almost any of the colors. This is going to be an excellent set for plain air painting next spring when the temperatures and light graduate from our cold gloomy winter! This is my first metal paint box and having something that was not made of plastic was a strong incentive toward buying this set. This was the 12 color set plus 6 additional 'free' colors. That's too many for my tiny aging brain to deal with and, to be honest, there are a couple of colors for which my own personal taste says 'ick'. I have no need for black, for example, and it's going to be replaced by Windsor & Newton's gorgeous Transparent Yellow before we exit our cozy cave into the real world. I'll get it down to 12 at some point and then I'll be happy. Probably. For a while. ;)Mike
