These headphones are either great or "meh" based on the price. If you can find them for $120-$130 which was roughly for what I purchased, then these are a great deal. They are decent for $150, but I would have to say no for $200. Honestly, you'd be much better served with an HD560s or an HD58x than these for $200.The comfort is decent and is just like any in Sennheiser's 500 line of headphones to include their PC37x and PC38x. I have a slightly larger than average head and ears, and I don't suffer from any fatigue from wearing these for any length of time. The mids are great as is usual with Sennheiser, and the treble I found really nothing to complain about. My only issue I found to be the slightly bloated bass with a tendency to have a slight bleed into the mids with the mids being kind of drowned out in bass heavy audio. While overall these are good headphones, I truly find no sense in getting these things when the HD560s does everything that this does and better. Like I stated above, if you can find these things in the low $100s, I would give my full recommendation. If however you're looking to spend anything close to $200 then I would highly recommend the HD560s or the HD58x if the Sennheiser sound is what you're after.

The audio is excellent. I have been able to hear so much more sounds in music that I have not been able to hear. On top of that, they are the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn. I have always had an issue with long headphone sessions. Headaches would start about an hour into wearing any headphones. With these, I have been wearing them for about 4 hours and I feel like totally fine. The open back nature of these headphones is a plus for me too. I like to hear what's going on around me at home, so if you're the person who needs to hear a knock at your door, or a weird noise in the night, you can easily hear everything around you.

Good value, solid product

There is nothing I could say that other's probably haven't. For an open back-style headphone at around $200AUD, it has a respectable sound signature and good sound stage. Easy to run for those without an external DAC/AMPThe headband plastic makes creaking noises when placing them on your head (and feels somewhat fragile).Would recommend at a $200AUD or lower price.

Great Mid-level Headphones
14 January 2024

Almost a 5 star rating. Very good sound quality. They are built sturdy. Sound is good with a decent bass and treble. They fit over the ear very well and they do not hurt after wearing them for an extended period of time. The only negative is the cord is a little too long. It gets tangled up on my computer desk. Not sure if it rates taking away 1 star.I have always bought Sennheiser cause to the sound and build quality. These headphones are a very value for the price.

Great headphones for newbies
4 March 2024

I've been wanting headphones for awhile. After doing some research, this specific model came up over and over for being a great introduction to audiophile headphones. I'm not looking to be an obsessed audiophile, I just wanted good sound. These headphones meet that requirement! I love the sound, I love the open back, and I like that they are corded. Win-win for me!

Just as I Expected

A friend of mine had a cheaper model of these that I originally did not like. The sound was too dark. Now, coming from Philips Fidelio X2HR headphones, these surely are warmer sounding than the Fidelios, but the sound is more rounded and the mids sound more dynamic. The bass is about on par between the two. The highs aren't as piercing as the Fidelios, though, they still sounded very good! These headphones feel very good on the head and don't clamp too hard. I forgot up until I got these that Sennheiser has their own proprietary headphone connector. So that bummed me out, but it doesn't bother me much. The cable was a bit stiff and annoying at first but it relaxed with time. One more detail about the sound. I really do feel like these headphones need a break-in ... MoreA friend of mine had a cheaper model of these that I originally did not like. The sound was too dark. Let me just say this: I have big ears! Because of this I have always found headphones to be uncomfortable as they would squash my ears against my head and became painful to wear if listening to a full music album, or even just playing computer games. Wow, what a pleasure it is to wear these headphones, and the tone quality is amazing. I am now able to hear more detail and the clarity is fantastic. Thank you so much!

Sennheiser is a great brand for Headphones but they keep ruining GREAT SUCCESSES with greedy decisions like Proprietary detachable cable and its restrictive molded port to plug the cable in and cheap leather and cheap diaphragm causing massive headphone clamp. The HD 599 does not have the clamp issue like all other Sen. do but has that cable that wont even fit OTHER Sen. models. Audio is amazing, very fun and imersive. Am noticing above average soundstage. Lot of Clarity but drowns easily.

So good I bought them three times!

These are awesome in every sense of the word. I have owned a very wide range of headphones and could be considered a collector. Current pairs include: HD580, HD650, HD599, DT880 Pro, DT770 80 ohm, AKG K712 Pro, Philips SHP9500, Fostex T50RP Mk3. Running a Schiit Modi Multibit DAC and a Schiit Asgard 2 amp. My first somewhat Hi-Fi headphones were the HD598s years ago. They were very underwhelming for me at the time, and I sold them for some more exciting Beyerdynamic headphones. Over time my tastes got more refined and I revisited the HD598 in its newer brother, the HD599. I LOVED them instantly, and going back to the 598s borrowed from a friend, finally loved those too. My friend with the HD598s loved the HD599s as well and offered to buy them from me. So I cut him a deal. However I ended up missing the HD599s so badly that I bought another pair, lol. HD598, HD599, HD599. I can't get rid of these things, haha. I fell in love with the HD599 very quickly. To me they are every bit the equal to the HD580 and HD650 in my collection. Kind of differently tuned, soundstaged and voiced, but similar overall ability. Definitely not flat. More of a shallow V shape like the HD650s but with more mid presence and smoother treble. They have less peaky treble than the HD598s despite even moreextension, and their mids are absolute perfection. Despite definitely having the "Sennheiser Veil" these headphones do a stunning job rendering detail. The more extended treble mixed with the veil creates an amazingly smooth response. Super pleasant to the ears. Bass is likewise noticeably improved from the HD598 with better dynamics and a little stronger punch. Build quality is also better than the HD598 and they are just a little bit more solid with a better headband. The cups are super wide and fit perfectly on my ears and the wide angled drivers mean they have a much wider and more active soundstage than the HD6xx series. Not artificially massive but spacious with great dynamics and imaging. They are also dead easy to power so most phones, sound cards, and PC headphone jacks will do a pretty good job running them. That said they really benefit from an amp, as they have impedance spikes through out their range up to 300 ohms. Superior comfort and nearly perfect sound mean these headphones punch far above their weight. For me they totally replace the HD650 as the "exciting" Sennheiser in my collection while the HD580 keeps its spot as the "boring reference" Sennheiser. Will be selling the HD650s. That's how good the HD599s are for me. For the prices these can be got for ondiscount there is no reason to look further than these headphones for most people. They offer performance nearly on par with a lot of higher end dynamic headphones, and have awesome tuning. I can't recommend these enough, and see them as an equal to the more expensive headphones in my collection. The HD599 is a perfect refinement of the classic HD598 with all the right boxes ticked. Get a pair now.
