I purchased this mic as a back up to my wireless recorder as it was giving me issues. After using the mic a few times I loved ALMOST everything about it. What I found was it has a pretty decent amount of "self noise" after doing some different tests with internal camera (Sony A7 iii) settings and some YouTube searches, I found I was right. I have had the previous MKE400 model for years and it has been a workhorse. I really liked its small size as my audience was not intimidated by its presence. Downside was that at times I would forget to turn it on. Although its battery consumption was so low, I realized its best to never turn it off. I just purchased this new one and I really like the fact that it turns on and off automatically as soon as you hit the camera record button. I wish the size was not so big. Its a bit in your face and the blue cable is so flashy that it does not help. Nevertheless, I believe this is another awesome Sennheiser on-camera microphone. Highly recommend it.

Overall, I was very impressed with this microphone. It's compact and the sound quality is very good, the wind cover also helps reduce wind and background noise. It also held up great in some pretty extreme weather conditions. My cons would be the screw-on mount isn't the most secure and it will pop off on occasions. And the wind cover elastic band sits right on the buttons that control the microphone. So you have to lift the elastic to check if the microphone is on, I also had it slightly move the gain button and it wasn't recording audio. These are just minor design flaws, but the overall run and gun quality of the mircophone was great!

At the end of the day, it simply doesn't SOUND like a DSLR shotgun mic. It sounds closer to a $40 Best Buy special. I wish it sounded better, I love the design and form factor.Also, the mic I bought came with a defect. So, build quality is suspect.
This is my third mic and the most expensive one yet. Its sound quality is the best of course compared to other $100 mics I used before. It is much fuller and life like sound than the other mics that made harsh or tingy, more like over the phone kind of sound. I think it is more than twice better than the other $100-ish microphones.I recorded my daughter's birthday party with two cameras, one with this and the other with what I used to use. I put the other one on eBay and getting this another one as soon as I play back both files. Huge differences.Auto on is a thankful feature. I love it.
I'm using this mic on a Samsung phone as a directional mic, hopefully with an increase in volume pick-up over the mic included on the phone.The three volume settings on the Sennheiser are barely on slightly on and thankfully, better than the phone's mic. So once I tested the settings, I'm satisfied that it is a usable mic with a better pick-up than the phone mic alone.I can't figure out why they included two settings that were lower than a phone's included mic.
This is a little shotgun mic specifically designed or mirrorless or DSLR video shoots. It's easy to set up and has a low profile. Insert the batteries and you're ready to go. One of the best features is that it turns on when you turn on the camera, or in my case, my little camera-mounted mixer, then shuts off when the camera is off. Sound is clean and clear if you're in a good range from your subject. The added fuzzy wind screen is a bonus!
Yeah so I wanted something small size, but with the capture ability of the Node NTG videomic. That one with the shock mount is too bulky when you're mounting it to your camera cage and it's butting up against the monitor. Enter this. It's more minimalist, not as much customization, and I was worried the pickup will be shorter. But after a couple events, I really am impressed by its ability. Sounds good too. A little on the expensive side, but if you're undecided, you should still go for it!

The youtube videos, the initial reviews...I am a film director and producer with 10 years experience and I work with sound long enough to know what good sound means in film video, so I thought it'd give it a try.All these years I trusted Rode and their gear never let me down, so when I saw this product come out I thought, I would give it a try both on iPhone pro and Filmic app and on my Canon XC10.It sounds fine but it's not a $200 mic and it's built quality is very cheap. After only using it for 3 weeks the hot shoe mount got loose so now I have a dangling piece of plastic on my camera making all kids of noises. The plastic (ABS) locking ring on the shoe mount broke in half on ours after only three weeks on our BMPCC 4k rig.We received no response from Sennheiser support and no replacement part is available for purchase, despite being easily user-serviceable. Luckily for me we have a machine shop on site who was able to machine a new part for us made out of aluminum to get this mic back in service.Takeaway: a great sounding mic, but don't look at it the wrong way or it will break and become useless without some MacGyvering (or having a machine shop readily available to you).
