A well-balanced noise-canceling headphones

Immediately, the first thing I noticed and therefore liked about the headphones was that my eardrums didn't feel that uncomfortable and painful over time pressure on my eardrums while using the noise canceling feature, unlike using the Bose QC series headphones which I think just has a bit too much of it. The Sennheiser PXC 550 is lightweight giving no issue to hours of use. The build and feel quality is luxurious and well-built. I like the plush ear cups and headband and the metal accents. One can tell Sennheiser had put some thougnt into making these cans. The audio quality is well-balanced in my opinion, although I am not audiophile by any means who knows what a well-balanced sound should sound like. One can tell Sennheiser had put some thougnt into making these cans. The audio quality is well-balanced in my opinion, although I am not audiophile by any means who knows what a well-balanced sound should sound like. I just know from my personal use and experience that there is a good mix of lows, mids and highs that one doesn't over power the others. Should I want to put a bit more bass perhaps, I can simply press the effects button on the right ear cup to activate Club sound, or Movie for a bit more bass. Should want the vocals to stand out, another press of the same button for Speech should do the trick. Or if I don't want any of that, I can simply turn it off. With Sennheiser's app, CapTune, I can even further customize my sound by adjusting the app's Equalizer. There are many presets available already but one can really fine tune the sound a bit more. Turning the headphones on and off is pretty easy by simply rotating the cups 90 degrees flat to turn off, and to normal listening position to turn on. The battery life, however, is a ridiculous twenty some hours if I am not mistaken. The remaining battery life is available using the app. The touch pad on the right ear cup works fantastically well to adjust the volume, skip or repeat tracks, scan forward or back songs, play or pause songs, take calls or mute calls, and even listen to your surrounding with the headphones on while the music is stopped. Sennheiser really executed this well. I will, however, say that the Smart Pause feature -- the feature that automatically pauses music when removing the headphones off or just lifting one of the earcups off an ear -- is a bit too sensitive. I experienced the music stop just with turning my head to look at something behind me, or removing my eyeglasses. The headphones sense some kind of movement, albeit minute, or a change in the pressure against the earcups or something that the music stops. I don't what exactly happens but the moment I turned off the Smart Pause feature I didn't have the problem of music stopping when I take off or put on my eyeglasses or turned myhead. Overall, I am very impressed with the Sennheiser PXC 550. I think I have finally found the set of headphones I can see myself using a lot with regularity. I just have to figure out what to do with all the other headphones I have amassed over the years of searching for the one well-balanced noise-canceling headphones. Great job, Sennheiser!

I ain't an impulsive buyer so I spent a few months researching for quality and features and a price that I am willing to spend. While I was ready to settle on the $40-$50 budget, mass-market headphones with reasonable quality (some people might know which brands and models I am referring to), Best Buy came up with this Sennheiser end-of-life model (replacing by 550 II) with a super attractive price. I grabbed a pair quickly after some doing some research and reading/watching some reviews.Build and design: I love this Sennheiser. Nice build. Comfortable. Fit my head and ears (I wear glasses). Some people complain about the on/off design but I am perfectly fine with it. However, I do agree with other reviewers that the touchpad on the right is a bit too sensitive. It took me a while to get use to the touch that controls the volume and the ANC bypass. Sometimes when I sit in my bed and lean back my head, the headphones stop playing thinking I am laying them down. This is annoying indeed. While some reviewers say that their ears don't get too warm after wearing the 550 for a while, my experience is different. I feel I get quite warm after listening to an hour long symphony or mass. Overall, I still like the design, build, quality, and features nonetheless.Sound: I listen to Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical music, world music (African, Asian, Middle Eastern, etc.), folk songs, contemporary music (CCM, pop, movie soundtracks), etc. I watch movies on my tablet. PXC 550 performs well. I like the clear and undistorted sound from these genres. (Not being an audiophile, I lack the vocabulary to describe the "tightness," "openness," etc.) I equate my listening experience with being in an orchestral hall for a live musical performance--balance from the performance itself without much post-production manipulation. The 550 produces crisp, clean, natural sound. Once I listened to a recording of Bach's Passicaglia in c minor on an historical organ in the Netherlands, I could faintly hear the mechanical sounds of the piston and levers in the background. What a joy!Noise cancelling: The 550 is my first pair of active noise-cancelling headphones so I cannot compare my experience with other ANC headphones. To be honest, based on my pre-purchase research and the reviews I read/watched, I had high expectations on the 550. That proved to be disappointing. Even if I turned the ANC setting to "high," I can still hear lots of conversation, TV noise, ambient sound, and my wife's snooring. Yes, the headphones reduce those noise but the noise is still too much if I want a quiet working environment (without turning of any music). If I play something over the headphones, they greatly reduce the ambient sound. My problem is, like many other musicians, that we don't (or can't) listen to music as we work--music attracts our subconscious intellectual and emotional engagement so that it takes away our focus in reading, writing, grading, sleeping, conversation, whatever (especially when the music is badly performed :)). I had hoped to use the 550 (without playing anything) to cut out the world's noise so that I could work quietly. That didn't work well. That being said, however, I tried out the headphones one time when I took the New York subway. It was amazing how the 550 cut out the low frequency huming sound from the subway, just like many reviews had said. I am eager to try the 550 on the airplane once COVID-19 is over.Overall, as my first set of Bluetooch, ANC, higher range headphones, I love the 550. Good battery life. Crisp and natural (real) sound.

Great for its intended use, but not perfect.
20 June 2022

I wanted to use this like a PC gaming headset, but it just won't work for that. For its intended use of listening to music and taking calls on a mobile, it's fantastic. I got it open box for $129 and I'm happy. I wouldn't have paid the $300+ retail though. Pros: - Super comfortable - Great sound quality (great bass response, but not overdone or boomy) - Great noise cancellation (though I don't know how it stacks up to the competition) - Compact and lightweight Cons: - Will not send a mic signal over the 3.5mm port, even though it uses a 4-pin cable that should allow this! - Will switch to a low quality/mono mode when using the mic over bluetooth or USB, so you need a separate mic for anything serious on a PC. - You'll accidentally activate the touch controls a lot ... MoreI wanted to use this like a PC gaming headset, but it just won't work for that. Furthermore, the ergonomics of the headphones are great; at first I wasn't excited about the touchpad controls, but they're intuitive and one of the best controls out there, plus the twisting on button feature is very useful. The only things I can fault them for are the following: working out with them on felt cumbersome and afterwards I felt somewhat nauseous (might not be the case with other people but I have very sensitive ears), noise-cancellation takes a good 2 weeks for your ears to adjust, it doesn't charge with USB-C, the headphone jack is not a universal size, and for some reason I can't purchase the headphone control app CapTune.

Well, to be frank, the headphones made this awful popping and hiss noise with or without ANC and the elongated ear cup shape hugged my jaw in the wrong the way it asleep caused my ear lobes to dangle and hit the back of the headphones (ear lobes have tiny studs in them). Then, if one device went out of range it would start to rapidly disconnect and reconnect to my device and turn off the music of the device I was currently listening too and turn on iTunes. I dont have any music on iTunes? The app that went along with the device is awful with the lack of in depth fiddling controls and the connectivity of the app is just as egregious as the headphones connectivity to anything else. I dont have any music on iTunes? The app that went along with the device is awful with the lack of in depth fiddling controls and the connectivity of the app is just as egregious as the headphones connectivity to anything else. The headphones dont have off and on button but instead make use of turning the headphones in a certain direction. They were extremely easy to turn off and on just trying to adjust them to my head shape. The touch controls worked but they worked TOO much. Overly sensitive headphones made adjusting them a nightmare as moving them could accidentally trigger the touch sensor and blast music into your ears which could put Beethovens hearing loss to shame. The ear cups were to too tight as well. The there was an extreme loss of audio quality if you turned ANC off and no amount of eq fiddlingwould help. The GOOD stuff: The headphones sounded great with ANC turned on with tons of bass. The pass through feature allowed me to hear things I couldnt even naturally hear with my own ears! The weight of headphones was good, top of my head was a-okay. And the roll up thing that it does along with having a case was neat too. Overall: I wouldve kept them if it werent for the ear cup shape and the clamping force which made it uncouth for exercise. I went back to my Sony wh-ch700s because these reasons. Though Im sure there are people who would love a elongated ear cup with a huge amount of clamping force, just not me.

Pros: I was surprised by the sound quality, which is on par or with a slight edge over my UE in-ear headphones. Has some nice bass definition without becoming too overpowering, with great clarity on mids and highs. I do notice the difference when listening to CD quality tracks compared to streamed versions, so this is a good sign. Effects are not required, but I do find them useful for certain applications. For example, there is a Speech mode which might be better for audiobooks, and a Club effect which rounds the bass a little bit, with a slight increase in bass output.Extremely comfortable - I owned a similar design before and after 20 minutes they were a pain. In contrast, these showed no discomfort after 2 hours even.Simply twist each side to turn on, and one ... MorePros: I was surprised by the sound quality, which is on par or with a slight edge over my UE in-ear headphones. For example, there is a Speech mode which might be better for audiobooks, and a Club effect which rounds the bass a little bit, with a slight increase in bass output.Extremely comfortable - I owned a similar design before and after 20 minutes they were a pain. In contrast, these showed no discomfort after 2 hours even.Simply twist each side to turn on, and one side features a touchpad where you can pause, toggle noise cancellation and more. And they are very simple to connect via bluetooth to a smartphone, you are talking next to no time with a latest smartphone for example. You also have access to Captune, an app to add to your experience - including an extra customisable effect and Smart Pause. The latter is a neat touch whereby simply taking off the headphones pauses the track you are listening to, and reapplying them continues the track.Works well when a call comes through, there are several gestures for handling calls, and it is well executed.Thankfully, they feature a wired output. So to access devices where sound quality is at optimum, against low quality streaming, you are well served here.Easy to charge, expect around 20 hours at higher volumes, but really this can stretch to nearly 30 at lower volumes. It comes with a nice case with zip, and a storage compartment for the adaptors and wire cable (gold connections).Cons: Perhaps the pricing compared to other models, but these are a reliable and great sounding pair of headphones and you are getting a lot of tech features, alongside smartphone integration.I find these loud enough, and turning audio source incrementally will boost the levels a little (I don't need to have at highest volume so far, and I consider myself to have extremely good hearing). Some may wish for slightly more volume capacity, but to be honest you are doing yourself more harm than good, and I think the makers have got it just right.

Not good value for money my opinion.

I bought this product a while ago and after using a few different competitors within the noice cancelling headphone area, I can conclude that these headphones are not good overall. The sound quality is good at best, I have used a few different pairs of Senheiser headphones (both wired and Bluetooth models) and I can say with confidence that the sound quality is OK for a Senheiser headset. The overall build quality of the headset feels relatively cheap and after using it for several hours, my head starts to hurt from the weight of the headset pushing down on my scalp. All the hinges are plastic and the swivel mechanisms that allows the ear cups to rotate, grind and creak when moved. All the hinges are plastic and the swivel mechanisms that allows the ear cups to rotate, grind and creak when moved. The touch pad on the side of the headset is very painful to use, at times it is easy to accidentally trigger even by just brushing you hand over the area. At other times the touchpad doesn't respond too obvious finger movements. The noise cancelling is quite disappointing for a headset of this price compared to other competitor's models (Bose and Sony). I have taken multiple long car trips on both noisy and relatively roads to test the noise cancelling capabilities of this headphones. I was quite disappointed to be honest, the headset filters low frequencies well, but unlike the Bose QC 35 it does not filter very much high frequency meaning while driving the high frequency road noise ruined my listening experience. The app produced by Senheiser, Captune, is absolutely useless. The EQ settings are overly complicated to set and save, and the app does not allow DRM protected music to be played through it. This means Apple Music users like myself cannot use the app at all.The headset is general is also quite buggy, the Smart Pause feature is very laggy and unreliable, and while watching youtube and Netflix videos through their native apps (on IOS) the headset just pauses content randomly for no apparent reason which is very frustrating.Battery life is not as advertised, while using the adaptive noise cancelling technology, the headphones will not last you nearly 30 hours (even wired) at the volume needed to produce a listenable volume.I would be happy with this product if it was at least half the current cost, for such an expensive pair of headphones, from such a renown manufacturer, this product is unacceptable. This is a premium product with sadly budget functionality.DO NOT buy them if you have another option.

They come in a nice storage case which fits everything that comes in the package. It took me less then 20 secs to get them connected to my iPhone via bluetooth. The ear pads are just the right size and very soft. I had them on for 2-3hrs per go, with glasses on, and not one time I felt the need to take them off to rest my ears. They are turned on automatically as soon as you twist them open which is a nice touch so you do not have to press any buttons.I really like the 4 effect mode options which are selectable with a button on the right-side headset. My personal favourite is the Club mode which gives a brilliant deep base. The touch sensitive functions are very easy to get used to swipe up/down for volume. Single tap for pause, swipe forward/back to skip back/next. There are many more touch sensitive functions but you get the idea. The Noise cancellation has two modes, a max mode and an adaptive mode the adaptive mode is meant to adjust the noise cancellation depending on surrounding noise although I could not tell the difference that much as both modes gave an excellent noise reduction. The battery lasts forever, sorry I didn't time it but it lasted me enough not to have to worry about charging them on a daily basis. Also the app that comes with them adds more functionality and customisation options which improves the listening experience. All in all, I recommend this set of headphones to anyone especially if you have a long commute or travel a lot due to the excellent sound, brilliant Noise cancellation, and lightweight/comfort.Cons: I couldn't fault them in any way but the only thing I found is that they seem to leak a little bit more sound then other brands I have used before which might disturb the person sitting next to you.Price is on the expensive side but then again these are high-end headphones and when compared to other high-end headphones they are priced just right (not the cheapest and not the most expensive). If you want quality you have to pay for it. The Captune app that comes with the headphones does not allow you to use Spotify to play music. It seems to only allow you to use apple play or the music located on your phone library. Having said this, it does come with a free 3 month Tidal trial.

Built-in microphone array sounds clear to your Skype friends as well as your callers on the phone. The integrated touch pad on the right earphone lets you adjust the volume up and down with a vertical slide and you can answer and hang up a phone call with back and forth slide of your finger. A tap turns the headset OFF or ON. The headset provides status messages by voice and mine is set to respond in English. They are amazing. I am anxious to try the Sennheiser PXC550-II headset just released butthese old PXC550's I have now just won't fail. Nice feel, well made, quality audio product. Not a "toy". A serious audiophile device. One of my favorite Thai easy listening music singers is Boy Sompob and he never sounded sweeter. Also your retail purchase comes with a two-year full repair or replacement factory warranty by Sennheiser.
