Awesome Reel and quality for awesome price!

I recently picked up my first Shimano Reel ever!!! BTR4000OC is the one I chose to go with for the option of having the ability to allow bait to run freely with out having to keep a bail flipped open. I like the freespool feature on my Penn Rival with clicker for this purpose as well. But I wanted a spinning reel and my local DSG did not have any Penn LL's in stock in store. I had toyed with the Shimano's many times in store but always walked away from them... Not because I didn't know the name, but just because of my love of Penns.. Anyhow back to the reel, I mated this reel to a 7' Berkley Lightning HD 1 piece rod with 14lb Cajun Mono backing and 30lb Sufix 832 Advanced. Then the next day the reel got the real test, I was jigging soft plastics with 15 lb flouro leader when I hooked into a good sized snook just above slot. This reel handled the snook like a dream, did not wear me out before wearing down the fish. I was able to land this snook but was unable to capture a picture as I was out in the water wading with out a camera. I do recommend this reel, will be purchasing the 8000 series to replace my worn out reel on my surf rod!

Bait Runner bait and switch

Great reel, but they changed the bait runner switch. If you insert into a rod holder it can shut off the runner switch. If the switch is off your bait runner not only does not work, but your entire rod and reel can be gone in a second. The original bait runner had the switch working opposite. Mistake to change.

I've been a fan of Shimano Baitrunners for ever, and this latest purchase continues to impress. I use the baitrunner feature in all my fishing as I feel it really helps with hookups. This is a reel that represents good value for money, it's drag system is very smooth.

Big test on first trip with new reel.
9 December 2022

On my first trip out with this reel I hooked up a monster fish and had to fight it for nearly 25 minutes to get it to the boat. The reel performed magnificently under heavy strain and multiple runs by the big GT. By the time it was at the boat I was pooped but the reel had done it's work without a hiccup. I couldn't be happier.

Did not succumb to the marketing strategy
16 October 2022

I need a 6000 series baitrunner. When I saw the sale, I thought “you beauty”.Then, I did some research. The BCF “Club” price is the same as other retailers normal price and the BCF “normal” price is a rip off.BCF do have some genuine specials from time to time, but this time I won’t reward sneaky advertising

Great reel
20 November 2021

This is by far the best spinner you can use for live bait off a boat or kayak. It's cheap but reliable, holds enough line to allow long runs. I've been using the Gosa and Stradics, but they don't have the bait drag system. It's probably going to be my go to reel from now on. Shimano makes the best reels in my opinion. I tried a few Penn reels and the drag systems gets a bit touchy when the lines flying off the reel, and you need to put more drag on the fish.

I give this reel 2 thumbs up. Maybe IM just a die hard Shamano fan
20 March 2019

I bought my first Shimano baitrunner back in the late 80's and i still have them 250, 350, 3500, 650 ,6500. I still have them all and all but one sill work fine even with a lot of wear and tear on them. I have a friend that is a die hard Penn fan, but i have watch him go threw quite a few Penn's over the years while i still have my trusty Shimano reels. I just brought the Shimano BTR4000OC , and I notice that it feels smoother then the older one one that i have even when i first bought them. I'M pretty sure that I'm going to just as happy with this one as i have been with the others, maybe even more. As for the price that i got this one, I think it was a awesome deal. Go to a retail store and see what they cost and you see why.

I heart Shimano

Great spinning reel, in a different class than typical domestic stuff. Great features, way more value than more expensive reels. Variable 2 stage drag setting can handle so much. Love it! I have 2. And 2 BigBaitrunners 14000s baby! (not available in US market.)

Parts are discontinued
22 March 2021

Bought it a year and half ago then the drag washers went out. Come to find out Shimano had discontinued about every part for this reel including the drag washers. Talked to basspro about it and there was nothing they could other than a warranty swap. Shimano has already started discontinuing the series above thieve models. Stay clear. Don’t even know why they are selling them without a disclaimer about it being discontinued by the producing company. Just about all of my Shimano bear is discontinued......

Shimano 8000 OC baitrunner

I owned a gold spool model when they first were introduced to the market. So I recently purchased this model. The ability to flick the T bar adjust the drag and hook the fish. While running multiple rods is the key feature. I find these newer models not as smooth as the early gold models. Be it after casting and returning the bail arm via winder. The bail arm itself can be a little pedantic not wanting to stay open I have found. Overall these issues are not a deal breaker. I think the reels could be priced cheaper due to these hiccups that occur often. These reels are possibly Shimano's best sellers regardless of the lack of quality. Do not get sand in these models. If the swell back wash is sandy they will jam in my humble opinion. While it can be used for ... MoreI owned a gold spool model when they first were introduced to the market. Compared to a baitrunner, however if solely using bait and multiple rods it is most convenient using the T bar drag setting.
