A necessary evil in order to protect your cogs and chainrings
4 October 2021

originally posted on jensonusa.com

Jenson USA had the chains when I needed them at a reasonable price. During the pandemic, it has become increasingly difficult to find necessary groupo essentials like a Dura Ace 11 speed chain. I replace my chain at about 3,000 miles and I go through 2 of them in a year. The chains are no longer cheap, but neither are the cogs and chainrings as inflation continues to affect the price of all components. I hope to use at least 4 chains before replacing my cogs.

I bought this as I was upgrading to a Ceramic Speed OSPW set.The chain is coated. There seems to be some debate about whether to strip that coating off and lube as normal. However, Ceramic Speed charge a fortune for their coated version, so I’ll run it for a bit and see how I go.Fitting is very easy, popping out a few links and then using the included split link to rejoin.Everything feels very slick and efficient and I’m looking forward to a long dry summer to get the miles in.

Of course great price! Bought 8 of them but all ARE FAKE. You wont see this chain at that price. They do not have holes on th chain, so is heavier. Box is identical, but the plastic came in a differente shape.

Finicky Chain
23 September 2019

I Had upgraded and used this chain on a Ultegra Cassette [3 seasons] but the chain noise with the big ring was very annoying. It also skipped on the 26 tooth. It was installed properly as per directional instructions. I had degressed it and re-oiled x2 it but same noisy issues. I took this chain off and put it instead on a bike with a 105 Cassette [2 season]-- ran/shifted perfectly silent. Weird.I've since bought the Ultegra chain and it works perfectly with the Ultegra Cassette.Finicky in my experience.Pros: High quality, Tight Tolerances, Easy to installCons: Noisy with Ultegra Cassette.

Good mileage on these chains
24 April 2021

I seem to get longer wear on Shimano chains than I used to get. Maybe Shimano's Slitec coating has reduced wear. I lube my chains every 200 miles with 3:1 mineral spirits to Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil. I use plenty of the cheap mix, which rinses out dirt and worn metal particles. I currently have less than 50% wear at 4800 miles on my current chain. I average over 6000 miles per year on my bikes, at 82 rpm and 160 watts normalized power with a 201 watt FTP, to give you an idea of how much I stress the chains. I have no issues with shifting.

Light, durable, and watt-saving
3 October 2022

This is not my first time using this chain and I’ve never had any issues using them for thousands of miles on paved and gravel roads. This is a light Shimano chain that is easy to size and install. Reportedly rates well in terms of decreased friction, saving a little over one watt in tests. You do pay for these benefits however.

Not a real Shimano Chain
3 December 2022

This chain is a fraud - it is not an official Shimano CN-901 Chain. It does not have hollow pins, it does not have the QL packaged in a separate envelope. I am truly disappointed in this, it has taken me a while to get to actually attempting to use this chain, I opened it yesterday and realized it is a FAKE. If you want a real Shimano CN-901 chain, do NOT buy this one. I wish I could return it, don't be fooled, I will not use this chain as I have no idea as to what the quality of it will be. Very disappointed!

Replace your chain regularly
27 April 2021

What can I say? It’s a replacement chain. And what a difference it makes. If you ride regularly- you need to check your chain for stretch- and replace it before it starts to grind on the cassette. And buy the chain before you need it - similarly to a spare tube- because parts are not easy to come by these days. And changing a chain with a quick link is something you really need to be able to do at home.

Shimano Knock-off
11 May 2021

This is NOT an authentic Shimano product. My master link had no directional arrows. The chain had etchings on both sides. The packaging was not a stickered with genuine Shimano parts. While the chain seems to function (okay), I dont trust items sold as something they are not. I will be replacing this item. Waste of money.

XTR chain is worth the extra $$$
27 April 2021

I thought I already did this review. I’ll do it again because XTR chains are like Duran Duran, a band so good they named it twice. XTR products are known for weight reduction, but I’m telling anyone that will listen (or read) that XTR chains are worth the extra money because they last. I went cheap one time and bought an XT chain. It broke. This has never happened to me with an XTR chain.
