At the moment I have been using Shimano's specialist surf reels , the Aerlex and the Ultegra C14 XTC , with my 12' Wilson Live Fibre off the beach. Both perform very well but I dom't use them as much since I purchased the Big Baitrunner Long Cast. The BBLC has the spool capacity . the drag , the retrieval rate and the casting distance that surpasses both the other reels, Add the baitrunner feature and you have all that you need for a great surf reel. The only drawback is that its a fairly weighty reel to use for long periods but this is a minor consideration and to be expected in most surf combos. The baitrunner feature allows you to set the reel in a PVC sand spike if it gets too heavy and the fish catch themselves. Not my choice but........

Great reel with exceptional line capacity. Excellent caster. Online purchase from BCF was unfortunately poor. Took ages to arrive accompanied by a discount voucher (as an apology) which when I tried to redeem was invalid. Really??

Well balanced. Super smooth and strong reel.Line peels off the reel smoothly providing a longer cast.Extremely happy with the reel, gonna be using this reel whenever I'm fishing from the rocks or beach.

Very poorly designed, some parts are plastic and break easily. Returned it and it was repaired than same issue happened again. All before even casting a line! Swapped for Shimano Saragosa 14000, much happier although would have loved to have had the bait runner if it wasn’t faulty.
Great Reel, well balanced. Lives up to the Longcast name. The Baitrunner feature has been great to pick up a number of fish from the beach and rocks. Great drag gives plenty of control reeling in those hard fighting Tailor, Salmon and Muloway from the beach. All round great reel. Would recommend to anyone.
Have owned 2.1st one broke out of box, plastic bits. The plastic body is the big let down. They may have high quality internals but that in my opinion is irrelevant if the body is plastic and not up to the job. They are also quite small for their apparently large size.Definitely not the sort of reel for bashing around on the rocks. These reels are nowhere near as tough and durable as say a Penn SSR reel.Penn SSR Series reels have become my go to reel. Tough as nails
What a reel!!What can I say.. yet again Shimano have given a great reel at a great price. This reel is so smooth! It's a pleasure use and looks great on my rods!
Lovely smooth real as always but after loading spools with line found nail arm on both reals do not close. Boxes thrown away and spools with line on and read on google that this is a common problem. So will not try to replace but Shimano quality let down by a ver simple mechanism where they have scrimped on quality material as hidden behind casing. A big disappointment as I have been using Shimano reals for 40 years. Not Angling Directs problem
First time I went fishing with my Shimano 1400XBT was disaster. Had my fishing line tangled few times. I was using 12Kg mono. Reel comes with plastic ring beneath the spool which is hold in place by 3 skinny plastic arms attached to the shaft. Fishing line got caught in there and snapped one of them and that was the end of my fishing adventure. When I got home I modified my reel, removed those plastic arms and glued ring on to the spool. Works like a clock, went fishing few times after that with no problems what so ever. My questions is why Shimano even put that on when reel works without it perfectly.
I havent used these reels yet so I cannot say how they fish but I have no doubt they will be excellent. The reels have a very silky smooth action and combine the best features of a big pit reel and baitrunner. They have a manual bail arm to prevent automatic bail arm closure during a long cast, and the front drag is of the quick drag type that goes from free spool to locked solid in one turn. The baitrunner switch is opposite to other baitrunners I have in that it is engaged when the lever is pulled out rather than when its pushed in like other Shimano baitrunners I have owned.this is actually better as you are less likely to accidentally operate the baitrunner when playing a fish.
