They keep asking me for a review so here it is. I bought some gears because the last lot got smashed. I had trouble installing them. I had to buy more equipment to fix it including a new chain and the tool to shorten the chain, which halfords didn't have which I had to get from another shop. In retrospect I wouldn't' have spent upwards of £60 on kids bike repairs I'd have bought a whole new bike instead. Bike repairs generally are a difficult economic prospect unless you've bought a £1000 bike. But the gears themselves are fine. They are gears.

The shifting of gears is smooth and quick, but if the cycle falls even once on the derailleur side it will get damaged. It happened to me yesterday, the pavement was uneven and the cycle fell, the derailleur got some deep scratches and it wouldn't shift to 1 and 7th gear. Also the idler gear screw started hitting the spokes in the first gear, as of now I just pulled the cage plate towards me, now its better. I thought that Altus was tough enough to survive minor dents or damages, but no its not that strong.

Those complaining about chain slop, ghost shifting, and a weak spring, might need to replace or shorten your chain. I have a 28/38/48 triple crankset, with an 11-28 8 speed cassette. Chain has been shortened to 112 links. The cage should be slightly less than vertical in the mid range position on both the crankset and cassette. Select 4th gear on your cassette, with the middle chainring on the crank. Shorten the chain accordingly to achieve the correct tension.

I just can't fault this derailleur. This is the second one I've fitted to a bike. The first one was fitted to my bike for work about a year ago and is still working flawlessly after hundreds of miles with just the plastic jockey wheels showing a bit of wear. After the initial set up, all that's been needed to keep the shifting spot on is the odd cable tightening to compensate for stretch. Excellent.
This is a good upper entry level rear derailleur from Shimano. It's affordable and well made. It's greased from factory and the (massively) oversized jockey wheels as well as articulation move effortlessly. (Despite the huge bottom jockey wheel it is still a bit smaller than the Acera long cage RD. See photo for comparison). The only trouble I see is that for the same if not less money you can pick an Acera RD which theoretically should be a hair better. Also my feel is that the total black colour would be very easily scratched but if you must maintain the black colour throughout the groupset what can you do! Can't comment on durability yet however the previous Altus C10 from 1996 it is replacing lasted for 21 years of abuse and it's still working fine with minimal ... MoreThis is a good upper entry level rear derailleur from Shimano. Only removing it as part of replacing together with other worn groupset parts. Testiment to how well made they were despite being "entry level". Just to note that the Shimano lineup back then consisted of fewer models than nowadays, so today's Altus might not be directly equivalent to 90's Altus. My final recommendation is buy it if you can't find the Acera RD-M360 in the price/colour you want.
Previous derailleur broke due to son thinking his £300 bike would perform the same as a £3000 jump bike. It doesn't.Gear hanger promptly did its job by snapping to save the frame, resulting in the derailleur being decapitated by the rear wheel's spokes.New gear hanger in place, this baby just screwed straight into place and 5 minutes of adjustment got him back on the road. Very happy son...and very happy dad who wasn't out of pocket by nearly as much as he expected.Can't fault Shimano parts, or the communication and quick availability by Halfords. I can only fault my son who, despite his aspirations, will never make it as a stunt biker.
Love these simple cheap derailleur's. Easy to set up you should not have to touch the A limit screw but the B limit will have to be moved if you are putting into a 7/8 speed this is the bottom of the two vertically aligned screws at the back of the mech. This does two things, stops the mech hitting the wheel and allows the mech to reach the largest gear. Probably the best upgrade you can do to a tourney gearset. After a short time the tourney's jump sprockets which I find irritating. Don't forget to change the cable inner at the same time. this is easy to do. often the shifter end of the cable is concealed, under the rubber grip (microshift) but I have never had to remove the shifter to change. Does a great job of changing gear on my 11-56t. I use this on my mid drive e-mullet that I use for exploring possible new trails that our 4 legged friends have started. At the price point of this mech I dont have too worry too much about it being trashed by the sticks, branches, bracken that you find lying on these type of tracks. It's not as well engineered as some of the higher end mechs, but does a great job of moving the chain up and down the cassette whilst keeping the chain tensioner. PS you need a hanger extender if you want to run anything bigger than 32t on the back.
I needed to buy a new rear derailleur after the rain cover of backpack, came off and got caught up in the old one! The Altus was a recommendation by the staff because of the sturdier cage. As a product designer I can see this is a solid piece of kit. Definitely surprised at how inexpensive this new set was (phew!) shifts positively and feels more reassuring.
I personally like the bigger wheels it uses. For sure changed the gearing for the better. It's been a little bit of a pain to get it dialed in a shifting perfect but I had to use a dropout saver cause the threads stripped out. Dropout works great but they say it throws off the line up a bit. With the correct tuning the dropout saver being there or not should make zero difference cause it can be adjusted. Anyways awesome derailleur even more so for the price. If you have a big box store bike, this will make a world of difference in a good way! Seen YouTube videos also that say this is the best for the price
