Im a fan of the 50e platform/size. I love my curado 70s, aldebaran, scorpion 1000, etc. This reel fits right in. Thats the reason I picked one up initially. To be honest, switching back and forth between this and reels costing 3 times as much has been no problem at all. Almost unnoticeable really. Its a TINY bit less comfortable than my curado 70 but thats about it. Throws great, nice and forgiving and at this point Ive completely forgotten which brake setting I have on inside. Highly recommended for beginners and seasoned anglers alike. I liked it so much, I immediately ordered the xt and mgl models from overseas haha Now we just need a few years to go by so we can see how it stacks up next to the curados longevity.

I purchased this reel after weeks of shopping and testing. For 100 bucks you would be hard pressed to find a better reel that operates as smoothly or efficiently as the Shimano SLX. The parts are well fitted, tight and durable. The drag and casting adjustments are incrementally smooth and will not loosen or change as in many other brands of similar design. At a 6.3: 1 gearing with 30# J-8 braid, a Shimano SX 6.6 MH rod, this set up is easily my favorite Bass hunting setup for many techniques. I have numerous other brands of casters Daiwa,Kastking,Abu,Pfluger,Lews and this beats them all hands down. I will now purchase only Shimano gear for all my future reels as I learned the hard way that just because something costs as much and is "internet pretty" it doesn't ... MoreI purchased this reel after weeks of shopping and testing. But for 100 bucks, this has to be the best "value" product for this type of reel.

I bought this as my first bait caster, and its treated me well. The variable braking system works flawlessly, I highly recommend watching a YouTube tutorial on how it works so you can make adjustments. Out of the box with a 1/4oz jig head it casted smooth with no backlash after adjusting the tension knob. would recommend, only gave 4 star due to plastic parts

Have had the reel over a week now, and have done some moderate fishing on it, including one day of all day fishing. To be clear, this was my first baitcaster. I grew up only throwing spinning reels. I was peer pressured into trying a caster and to be honest. I LOVE IT. This is the best reel if you're starting out on casters. Between the tension adjust and Shimano's brake system on this reel, I rarely or never thumb it, unless i'm stopping an errant cast or keeping it off the bank. It reels so smooth and the oversize handle is very nice. I loved it so much, I immediately bought another on a heavy rod for a frog pole. This reel is amazing, and Shimano is always quality. If you're on the fence, buy this reel.
These reels are superb for the price point and catching them on sale or using the Academy coupons makes them an even better deal. The aluminum body makes for solid hook sets while the adjustments, some what minimal, are easy to tune for a variety of lure sizes and weights. These are a true low profile bait caster which makes for easy palming all day long. The side plate for the weight adjustments are nice as well because unlike some, the Shimano SLX 150 side plate can’t fly off mid cast into the lake because they’re attached by a pin that’s under spring tension. I own 4 of these reels so far and see myself buying more to replace my other brands as they wear out.
Bought this reel at the end of the season and it is fantastic! It's small enough that any size of hand can fish it easily. If you want a Shimano reel of good quality but don't want to step up to the Curado's price this is a must have for sure! The aluminum body holds up nicely and gives the reel a solid feel even when doing something tough like flipping heavy brush. The braking is also amazing, if you are starting in the bait caster world start with a Shimano the centrifugal brakes out do magnets any day and this reel nails the centrifugal braking system. Overall fantastic little reel highly recommended for anglers of all experience.
The SLX has a very quality feel its super smooth and it's excellent at casting heavy lures a long ways... It's not real good at the lighter stuff but that's not what it's for... centrifucal casting Shines at the medium to heavier Stuff. Large crank handle and a very powerful reel.....overall 5 stars
This reel is rapidly becoming my favorite reel. I currently own the Curado K and 4 other brands of baitcast reels. I wouldn't claim to be a "brand loyal" Shimano guy but with this one I am quickly becoming a believer. This bait caster is small and fits my small hands nicely. It also casts wonderfully and the drag system works flawlessly. Easy to set up so you don't have to worry about "bird nests" or overruns. If you are new to baitcasters I highly recommend this as a 1st baitcaster. If you are a seasoned pro you'll be wondering why your spending $300 on reels when you can get this. Get 2 of these for the price of a Curado K, that's what I did: I have both the 150XG 8.2:1 and the 150 6.3:1 and they both work great!
First of all, I used to be a huge Abu Garcia fan until they started disappointing me (gear and customer service.) I also have a few Quantum reels that I love but this one blew them out of the water! Best of all, its 100 dollars! What a steal!!! Shimano is aware that they're only selling this for 100 right?! I was able to adjust the reel quickly and am able to cast extremely far with only one brake on. I love the braking system! With the 8:2:1 gear ratio, this replaced my revo on my frogging setup. The SLX is on the cheaper side of my reels but it has grown to become my favorite in such a short time of using it. I am definitely getting more.
Bought this reel as a replacement for my Kastking assassin. Its definitely not as good as i thought it was going to be. It doesn't palm very well. The return paw will hit your finger when you do palm it. Claims it will hold 150 yards of #20 power pro line, you will be lucky to get 100 yards. The braking system isn't very selectable line a magnetic system is. On the plus size it is light weight and can cast descent, except when casting it to the wind. overall it is an ok reel, just a bit over priced. My $50 Kastking is a lot better than this one.
