I love these reels! High quality as always from Shimano. Smooth drag and great baitrunner feature. I love these reels for surf fishing because I can set the reel on my rod holder, flick on the baitrunner switch and I don't have to worry about leaving the bail open or loosening up my main drag. Once a fish is on, turn the handle and the reel automatically switches from baitrunner mode to fighting mode. This allows me to set my main drag and not have to mess with it again.

I purchased Thunnus 6000 to pair with my star rod Paraflex 10'. It is by far the smoothest reel I ever used. I learned through hard knocks with other live liners reels. Please do yourself a favor and skip other live liner reels and buy the shimano baitrunner. You get what you pay for.. Smooth, great casting and dependable reels. I have caught 40 inch Stripers off the pier with breeze. Highly recommend! I just wished I got the 8000.

One of the best reels for top water live bait in Gulf of Mexico. Landed a 57 lb Cobia last year with this same reel. Built and designed for rugged environment. I have had no problems with it. Love it.
This Shimano Thunnus reel is now my go to favorite. I have many of these in the fleet now and I can't say enough good things about the quality drag system and the feel of quality you get with this reel. The baitrunner system helps with rigging and I would not have a reel now without this feature. Pricey but worth having these quality reels in the fleet.
Purchased the 8000 Ci4. Very good reel, excellent fishability. Just returned from Mexico, I used the reel for surf fishing with no luck; however it cast very well. I will likely purchase the 12,000 for surf fishing because after fishing from boat with this reel I believe a large fish might spool ya. The bait running function worked flawlessly caught at number of Serria Mackerel and couple of Cabria using live bait from the boat. Both the main drag and bait running drags worked very well in my opinion. My only concern is line twisting. Had to cut off about 20 yards after 3 days of fishing.
This is the best shimano reel for the money by far. I have a feeling that their going to discontinue or the next generation is going to be over priced. Buy this reel asap and buy a few if you can. The good things don't last. The quality of this reel is superior for its price.
I landed 8 yellowfin tuna from 25-35 lbs on the 12000 and it performed perfectly! I fished 50lb powerpro with a 30lb flouro leader. each fish took about 8-12 min to land. Love the live bait option because I can close the bail, let the bait swim, let the tuna run with the bait and then click it over. Even on j hooks I set each one in the corner of the mouth!
this reel isn't worthy of the name thunnus compared to the originals this reel weighs in at 19oz due to a carbon fibre frame and rotor, sports a 4.8:1 retrieve, holds 295yds of 12lb mono and 300+yds of 20lb braid, and a max drag setting of 20lbs. this reel is really really good it just isn't great like its predecesser. can you upgrade the drag on this reel? sure but why since it doesn't sport an aluminum frame its just a matter of time before you get some flex like the 4500B models which is why if i were running things at shimano this would be the baitrunner E models and i'd reintroduce the original thunnus with this reel's drag system and reel handle.
