Shimano Tiagra 30WLRSA Overhead Reel

Shimano Tiagra Reels are widely accepted as the ultimate offshore reels by captains worldwide because of their durability and superb performance against the biggest and baddest fish in the ocean. With the introduction of the newer Shimano Tiagra A series of reels, an improved ratcheting lever drag was introduced, allowing for more precise drag adjustments along with an improved 2-speed gearing system. Shimano Tiagra A Series Reels (Tiagra 12 and Tiagra 16 excluded) received an offset ergonomic power grip that gives anglers more leverage. Specs & Features AR-B (Anti-Rust Bearing) stainless steel ball bearings are specially treated to drastically increase the corrosion resistance of the bearing. These bearings will last at least 10 times longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings in high salinity environments. The HAGANE Body is made of highly rigid aluminium or magnesium. This increases stiffness and impact resistance, and helps to stop the flexing of the body. The result is a rock-solid housing and support for the moving internal gearing and greater efficiency throughout the reel. Cross Carbon Drag material provides a wider range of drag settings and gives the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.

Worked on charterboat that had these for seven years. 365 days a year operating. 80lb mono on the 50 and countless marlin, nice tuna to 100/150lbs, and nice wahoo to 50lbs or so...no problems, except on drag replacement in those seven years. The 30's were worked even more handling most of the bonito, smaller yellowfin to 40lbs and bull mahi to 40 also and wahoo in the same range. Also small marlin to 200. Did not have any problems.Had penn internationals on the boat before that, and their drags would need service every other marlin or yellowfin in the 60lb range and up. We would mark them with tape. In my experience reels are more than proven trolling.

All I reach for is Shimano

Shimano is the best. What ever price range size or strength that other reels are compared to,shimano outperforms each and everyone. All I use for bait, lake, surf deep, trolling and tuna. Shimano is number 1 with me.

Extremely Well Built Big Game Reel
21 October 2019

I chose the Tiagra 30A as my big game reel because I did not need the extra capacity afforded in the 30 wide or the 50 series reels. I spooled it with 579 yards of 80 lb Powerpro braid and put it on a Shimano 200 lb class rod for use offshore targeting grouper, snapper, and pelagic. The reel is fairly heavy and would also pair well on a bent but rod. The two-speed shift mechanism works very easily, and the drag plates are very large and should afford very consistent operation. The drag lever works very smoothly. I am very happy with this reel and would highly recommend it to others.

Old tech good tech

Old school, love it, can hear a strike clearly over engine, wind and sound system noise unlike a talica. Works all day everyday as it will when the grandkids inherit it, drag is smooth. Heavy AF compared to talica's etc.

They are great reels, filled them with 80lb diamond hollow braid and 50lb momoi blue diamond. Drag is amazing and built to last.

Tiagra-16: BIG punch in a small package!
22 July 2007

If you like to tackle BIG fish with light gear then you've got a give this reel a try. Before the advent of spectra, anglers were forced to use bigger heavier reels in the 30-80 size to accomodate line capacity. I was able to get about 400yds of 80lb spectra and still had room for about 100yds of 60lb mono. This is perfect for targeting fish up to 200lbs when flylining bait at closer range. I like to keep the reel in high gear until the fish goes straight up and down and then switch to low gear to winch them in for the gaff. The drag on this reel is awesome and has so far maintained constant and even pressure during long runs dished out by trophy yellowfin tuna and other pelagics. The drag on this reel is awesome and has so far maintained constant and even pressure during long runs dished out by trophy yellowfin tuna and other pelagics. While fishing on a 10 day trip out of San Diego, I was able to land monster yellowfin in the 100-180lb range as fast if not faster then some of the other passengers that were using larger reels. I have no doubt in my mind that I owe this accomplishment to the overall lighter weight of the Tiagra 16 and it's incredible drag strength and cranking power. I've found that fishing with the smaller form factor allows me to concentrate more on fighting and landing fish rather than fighting to keep the rod and reel stable without a harness. Keep in mind that fish of that size are very rare on 10 day trips(and shorter)and that was my main reason for sticking to the lighter gear. It was totally unexpected. When it came down to crunch time I thought I was not going to be able to handle them with this Ti-16 reel. It was the best mistake I've ever made and stand up fishing has never been more fun! Thanks again Shimano for a great product!

World Class Reels
12 July 2021

The 30W Tiagra is my go to reel for midshore NJ Tuna trolling and chunking. Super high Shimano quality. Plenty of line capacity and drag for our mid shore 20 to 100 lb bluefin and yellowfin and the two speed capability and size / weight make it a great reel for pulling in side trackers and spreader bars in a hurry when you need to clear lines.
