Another classic and great reel from Shimano

I have 2, one is at least 10 years old, of these and a 25 and they are really great reels. They guy who cleans and services my reels in the off season, joking, said he doesn't service TLDs because they are too well built! We've never had an issue with any of them, even the one that's at least 10 years old. There's a reason everyone I spoke with about a trolling reel said to get a TLD.

Best Reel for light trolling

This reel is very versatile but it's niche is light trolling. This reel will catch wahoo, small sail fish, school size yft and can even be used for grouper and snapper though here a lot will depend on the angler's skill when the fish strikes.

I personally love the TLD series reels. If you’re on a budget, and looking for a quality reel, this is definitely it. I have a tld 20 and 30 and absolutely love them. I’m honestly thinking about adding more to my arsenal for the 2020 season. If you’re beginning to fish for big game fish, the Shimano TLD reels are where it’s at!!

Best value in offshore reels?
9 August 2022

As others have said, this may be the best "bang for your buck" reel if you're looking to get into offshore fishing, especially for those of us who don't really have true "offshore" boats. We use the 25s for trolling lures, I have caught basically everything, including sailfish, mahi and my PB wahoo (about 60lb). 20s are good too if you dont need as much line capacity.I use the 15s for livebait mackerel fishing on 20lb mono as well.I would be willing to spend a few more bucks if they came with nicer / bigger handles

Great Reel
28 May 2012

Finally got to take my TLD20 deep sea fishing this last weekend. Worked perfectly and I hauled in several large fish. This was my first salt water reel and thought I would let other newbys know a few things about salt water reels. I did not notice that this reel did not have a level wind, no big deal because the way we fished, trolling and shore fishing did not really need it. Also all my previous experience was bass, and hybrid striper fishing, so it took me awhile to figure out how to cast it. This real is fine for casting bait out or trolling but not for casting lures, its just not made for that. Salt water fishing is totally diferent than fresh water fishing, well depending on what you are fishing for I suppose. Great light tackle reel.
29 March 2018

Great reel for all around light trolling. I also own TLD 25's and honestly I perfer the 15's. I mainly use them for Dolphin, Blackfin, Kings, Sails... I've had them for a few years now with no issues at all. They are just light enough to feel comfortable and just heavy enough you can put some pretty good pressure when it's needed. The only thing I'd change is I wish the 15's had harness rings like the 25's do, the wife would really appreciate the rings on any game fish over 20lbs (especially the Blackfin) I would NOT dare high-speed wahoo fish with either they will get smoked quick but I have brought in a 45lb hoo that picked up a freeline on the 15. If your looking for something to do some reef trolling I would definitely recommend it.

Love this Reel Design.
26 July 2017

I have several sizes of this reel and they are all terrific. I have one that has lasted for almost 30 years of heavy service. The drag is smooth and dependable, and easy to adjust. I use them mainly for trolling (for salmon, halibut and tuna) and jigging for rock fish. They work great when loaded with mono or braided line. The frame is very solid so cranking against tough fish is really steady and fun! Great value for the price.

Ok, but useless for casting
6 July 2019

This seems to be a very robust reel, but I’m disappointed because I bought it for land-based fishing because the company literature claims its good for casting. Actually, it’s very difficult to cast even for an overhead. Being lever drag it takes a lot of weight to get the spool moving, you can’t use the drag to limit freespooling, and you can’t get your finger on the spool properly because of the cross brace. I guess you could learn to cast it to some degree - but never very well.

I have used the Shimano 2 speed reels since their introduction. I tuna fish with them with no issues.About once every 5 years I do a general maintenance & they just keep work perfectly.

TLD20 missing parts
9 February 2023

Have purchased 2 tlds in the last yr. Both have come new in the box missing a part. The new tld20 had drag issues on its 1st day out and been only a day old i took it back taht afternoon. The bcf twam were great, especially when i showed them the older yr old tld was having issues as well though a defferent issue. They repaired it with a part frombthe new real. I simple spring. The tld 2o unfortunely had them stumped and they replaced it with a tld15 due to stock shortage.Saying this i have had and still have TLD20s in yrs ago that have never had issues and have been totally reliable.
