Can't beat it. Love the reel definitely noticed the upgrade when bottom bouncing in anywhere from 40m to 85 Meters of water and jigging on shallow reefs. Great all rounder and plenty of stopping power for those bigger fish

This is very good general purpose reel for when you want a star drag. I like it mostly bottom fishing and casting. The ONLY reason I dinged it to a 4 star is the lugs for the real seat clamp. They are of good design but material that just isn't up to the quality of the rest of the reel. The flanges that hold them to the foot of the reel will break under strain if you don't snap them off installing them. I found a few solutions like the cork puppy, the trinadad A clamp and the Tiburon TCU-L. I choose the Tiburon clamp. Runs about $40 and was about half of the most expensive solution. Other than that it fishes with the power and reliability of the older Penn 4/0s with out the weight, balance and slack in the anti reverse. Far more castable too. I use this reel for bottom fishing and vertical jigging. This is my second torium, owning the original model previously, and only having to replace the drag washers and one broken anti-reverse pawl on that model over many years of fishing abuse with a locked down drag. Only used the new model twice but I like the way it feels, especially the new star drag knob. It's much more ergonomical than the original. I've already hauled up some nice snapper, AJs and a cobia on it with no issues so far. I was a little skeptical of the new look as it appears cheap on the outside but so far, so good. Seems just as good if not better than the original.
I have landed some big Dhu fish on my Torium 14HG reel and it hasn’t even looked like letting me down.
This reel is the cadillic of saltwater fishing reels. With a 6.2 to 1 retrival rate, it's fast. If you want quality for fishing small to big fish, or trolling. This is the reel to buy. Unbelievable smooth action. I am extremely happy to have purchased 2 from "Japan-Reels
I have the 16 and loaded with 500 yards of 50 Berkley Professional Braid. The reel is smooth, very powerful, free spool is awesome and casting is awesome and the drag is nice and smooth with carbon fiber washers. It is really compact...almost the size of the Torium 14. The 16hga is slightly slimmer and slightly taller. For jigging, casting and retrieving it is great with the narrow spool. Most people would probably not need more than the 330 of 65lb braid it holds though.its also a one piece cast frame now, no graphite! A nice budget Trinidad if you do not need to spend the 450. If your concerned about casting distance, just upgrade the spool bearings to bocas.Only downside is the frame on bottom is not bowed so if you decide to load up 535 of 50 or 330 of 65lb ... MoreI have the 16 and loaded with 500 yards of 50 Berkley Professional Braid. I have two Torium reels a 14 and a new 20 .The new 20 has been put to work and I recently had a trip out and caught some nice Snapper and Pearl Perch.The reel worked perfectly and I am very happy with it. I think that its good value.
These are as smooth as silk, like all Shimano reels. I haven't used these yet, but I know they will work great for halibut fishing.
I have owned a few Shimano reels and this one is by far the worst. This reel has side play in the spool, casting brake is basically on or off almost no adjustment. The reel looks great but it's performance is very disappointing.
