Best improvement since the paralellogram!

This is the new, "shadow" type derailleurs. It really sits waaay "in", under the dropout. It's a pretty slick design designed to reduce the chances of your derailleur getting smashed in a crash. My GS caged model came in under 200grams, has bearings in the pulley wheels and shifts just like a higher end Shimano derailleur should. If it's time to play the "upgrad-y" game, this is a no-brainer.

Big Step up from Old Short Cage 105

Changed everything on an older 105 bike I had to all Ultegra. Well worth the investment. It takes a lot less movement on the shifters to make a gear change, and the change is faster and quieter. Rather than be limited to a 28 tooth low gear, now I can easily go to a 34. There's plenty of hills here where that'll make life easier. I use this particular bike on Zwift and hated the idea of yet another winter of climbing with a 28 tooth gear. (Why is it EVERY route but one on ZWIFT has a bunch of climbing?!) I run 52/36 up front and really didn't want to change that where everything else I have uses that. I tried all the Wolf Tooth stuff to try and get a bigger cassette on, but no luck. Good value, innovative design.

Innovative design results in a derailleur moved about 2 cm back to enable easier wheel changes and a narrower unit that could be slightly less prone to crash damage. I've normally used Campagnolo derailleurs where the cable enters from the back, but the adjuster barrel is exposed and prone to break. This design has the cable entering more from the side, so although the cable hangs out further (easily corrected by a zap strap), it's less exposed to breakage when the bike is stored without wheels (as in the trunk of a car).

Great Derailleur, EXCEPT adjustment

Shimano Ultegra high quality, except the barrel adjuster is a flimsy plastic that will not consistently work.I swapped in the adjuster from my old 10 speed ultegra and it works great now. Alternatively you could add an inline adjuster someplace (if you don't have all internal cables :(.Shimano blew it on this one, but maybe they have changed the adjuster on newer versions of this model.If you get one and it seems hard to get it shifting right, unless your derailleur hanger is off, it's probably not you, it is the adjuster to.

An excellent upgrade from the RD6800. Shifted very smoothly and precise. Easy adjustment. Great design close to the frame to avoid hit. Great Shimano product as usual.

Long term road test: Shimano Ultegra RD-R8000 11SP Derailleur

Great upgrade to the 6800 series RD! Purchased mine in May, 2021, so it's had plenty of road testing time. I'm a retired racer, but still appreciate high quality road racing gearThe Cervelo S3 had some minor shifting issues with a slightly bent 6800 RD cage and derailleur hanger (used bike purchase). Better feel, very reliable shifting, with the STI 8000 shifters - also upgraded from 6800 shifters. Having a 30T max capacity is good enough for most climbs in our area.May covert to a GS model for the 34T max capacity. We have multiple Category 3 and 4 climbs to ride during club training camps, barely 2 hrs from here.If there's a minor complaint: it scuffs easily on the cage area, but no surprise.

Read the fine print before buying.

This item was advertised as an "11 sp RD", but Shimano RD-6700 is a 10 sp rear derailleur, not 11 sp, But, I checked the model # before making offer, so I knew it was 10 sp. Moot point, I guess? Anyway, derailleur was in excellent shape, better than photos, and works like new.
