Fantastic openear headphones for activities

A fantastic piece of technology. Bone conduction technology had been around for a while but I daresay this is my first time experiencing it and it blew me away. The first time I put the headphones on and turned on the music, I was not expecting the music to come in that clear and crisp. It felt as if the music was playing in the room. Typical headphone or earbuds shuts out the noise around you, where at times can be a danger especially on the road. Fortunately, with its rating, sweat and light rain should be ok. Pairing via bluetooth is incredibly easy, my phone was instantly able to find it and pair it right away. Only weird part is that the headphones don't power off by itself so definitely be mindful in turning it off or else the battery will drain! As for the sound itself, I wasn't expecting it to be on par with closed-ear systems. Its just simply not possible. However, for what it is, the quality of the sound is pretty amazing. I am able to hear everything the music has to offer as well as spoken speech in podcasts. What's even more amazing is that there is absolutely no sound spillage at all. I would absolutely recommend this product. It is a bit on the expensive side but the technology behind it is pretty spectacular.

I was excited to receive these for review as part of the REI product advisors' program. User controls are very small, but simple to remember and use. I never received a phone call while wearing these but found the quality and clarity of the music to be excellent. User controls are very small, but simple to remember and use. I never received a phone call while wearing these but found the quality and clarity of the music to be excellent. The headphones stayed in place well during activity and endured perspiration well. After using them on two occasions in the gym these are my thoughts. If you are looking for an immersive music experience while lifting weights or using cardio equipment, these are probably not for you. Because of the open ear design, I was able to hear what was going on around me. But it was not overly distractive from enjoying the music while exercising. Peripheral noise was less of a problem in the cardio area, which is generally much quieter than the weight room. The weather improved during week two and I was able to use the headphones outside and more as they were intended to be used. I love to walk several miles at a time around town or in my hilly neighborhood and it was nice to listen to music while exercising outside. I was afraid the headphones may interfere with the fit of my sunglasses, but found I was able to make these work just fine. The headphones remained in place well and were comfortable during movement. As you might imagine I encounter vehicles, animals and many other potential safety concerns while exercising in and around town. The open ear design of these headphones is great for listening to music but remaining aware of your surroundings and potential hazards while exercising. If you primarily exercise in urban environments and want to remain aware of your surroundings, these are perfect. So far, I've used the headphones for about 6 hours and they still have plenty of battery charge left. The carrying case for the headphones works well to store and protect them and there is room in the case for accompanying instructions, etc. All in all, these are great for exercising outdoors safely and the awareness capability while wearing these headphones more than outweighs a less dynamic music experience.

Great idea, decent execution

These headphones solve two problems, and do it very well. They allow you to wear headphones without closing off your ears (they sit on your jaw bone, directly in front of your ear canal) , and they are extremely secure, lightly pressing on your jaw and secured by a semi-rigid band around the back of your head. This latter was impressive - I did not once dislodge (or even move a little) the headphones while walking, bouncing around, or riding my bike. More comfortable to wear than any other headphones I have tried. Not blocking your ear means you can hear ambient sound as if you had an external speaker on, e.g. a radio somewhere in the room. This allows you to have a conversation and be aware of what is around you, unlike ear buds or ear covering headphones, which is great. I used to enjoy jogging with an old Walkman and its headphones but was not crazy about not being able to hear my surroundings - problem solved. Of course, you still have the fact that the ambient sound is largely covered by the music or podcast you have going, but it’s a huge improvement. I suspect it’s also better for your ears’ health as you’re not stuffing a dirty plastic object repeatedly into the narrow canal, nor are you sealing the entire ear in a damp trap as with an over-the-ear headphone. That said, there is a price to pay in terms of sound quality. Both Apple Air Pods and old corded earbuds have noticeably superior audio quality, as do Sony ear covering noise cancelling headphones. However, almost certainly that is an unavoidable tradeoff, and a worthwhile one if you want to be more a part of the rest of the audio world instead of your own private audio-space.The other issue I have with these is that the controls are 3 small physical buttons on the headset, which are both a little hard to find feeling around, and not entirely reliable. For example, the same button pressed once is “pause” or “restart”, pressed twice is “skip forward”, but on multiple attempts my “skip” just produced a “pause”. Maybe I didn’t fully engage the button, maybe my tempo was off slightly, I don’t know. But that is annoying. It’s also significantly less elegant than Apple’s or Sony’s interface which allows control by tapping on the earpiece (once, twice, and for Sony, a slide up or down for volume). That’s elegant, easy, and you never have to feel around to try to find the buttons. However, it’s not a catastrophe, and one will adapt to the peculiarities of this gadget like anything else new. If you really need the open-ear, secure for exercise headphone, these are worth dealing with those small imperfections.Battery life was not an issue in the several hours at a stretch I used them. They rely on an app to manage them, and that’s a little kludgy, sometimes not pairing as readily as one would hope, but just mildly annoying. The equalizer on the app lets you choose ‘regular’ (i.e. music) mode or ‘vocal’ for spoken word listening, which does make a difference. All in all, a very good product.

All of this makes them great if you're listening while mobile or exercising, or if you hate having buds in your ears or cups over your ears. They're great for audiobooks and podcasts, which is what I use them for.You can still hear everything that's going on around you. This makes them great for cycling (my primary use case).Absolutely no problems fitting them with glasses or bike helmet. Again, for me, it's like they're not even there. The volume is pretty good. You can hear the audio over MOST external noises. (More on this below.)Solid battery life.Good, actual clickable buttons. No unreliable gestures.THE NOT QUITE AS GOODThey DON'T sound good. Not even as good as the cheapest set of buds or over-ears I've used. Don't be fooled into thinking otherwise. Yes, you can HEAR the music clearly, but I'd never use them to LISTEN to music, to immerse myself in it. They're tinny. I'd use them for music only if I wanted some background music. It's much like placing your phone near your ear and playing music. The bass is a little better than that, but they're categorically NOT headphones for listening to music. (For reference, I listen to music with either a pair of Sony WF-1000XM4 buds and Sony WH-1000XM5 over-ears. But my kids have cheaper headphones, and the Shokz don't even come close to those cheaper gadgets. For me, the sound quality is irrelevant, because I listen to mostly audiobooks, and they're great for that.If you're planning to use them in or beside traffic, be aware that a loud truck will drown them out, even at the highest volume. And if the traffic varies, you'll have to constantly adjust the volume, otherwise the headphones will be blaring in your ear when the traffic's light, and too quiet when the traffic's heavy. None of this is a huge problem for me, because most of my riding is done next to light or no traffic. Occasionally a truck will go by and I'll miss a word or two of my audiobook, but I can still pick up what I missed from context. And if I can't, I can always skip back a bit and listen again. If you're playing to music, I suspect traffic won't be a problem, because you won't notice if you miss a particular note or lyric. If you're planning to use them in high wind or when riding very fast, you may not hear as much. That said, I have no problems, even at around 40km/hr.If you're outdoors in an environment with mixed ambient noise (no traffic, light traffic, heavy traffic, wind), you'll find your average volume is pretty high. When combined with the poor sound quality, you may find this a bit fatiguing. I think it's mostly the sound quality. I find it hard to listen to loud, tinny noises of any sort, for a sustained period. They're definitely not as fatiguing as wearing a set of uncomfortable buds or buds that start slipping out as soon as you start to sweat, but still a little tiring. That said, I can easily get through a 3-hour bike ride, without feeling the need to turn the content down or take them off.

These are very good headphones and have a lot going for them. As a runner, it was nice that these stayed put and were very comfortable, so much so that I forgot I had them on. They do not bob up and down on the back of my head like some other headphones I have worn with the same design. The open ear design and water resistance is great, especially when running in the rain as I got caught in a downpour on a 5 miler and never did the rain have an affect on their performance or did I get "water ear." At first, the TurboPitch technology feels weird, but I quickly got used to it and don't notice the vibration after about a minute. I am really surprised at how much volume I get from this design. At first, the TurboPitch technology feels weird, but I quickly got used to it and don't notice the vibration after about a minute. I am really surprised at how much volume I get from this design. Vocal audio quality on both sides of a phone call is also very good, as well.On the downside, the music audio quality was so-so. While the manufacturers specs give a CD quality 20Hz-20KHz frequency response rating, I do believe the open ear design is to blame for what I perceive as poor dynamic range and makes for FM radio quality sound. The app does have a very limited EQ (only standard and vocal boost modes), but I would like to be able to adjust the bass/mid/treble levels independently, which may be helpful to relieve some of the muddiness in the sound. Contrary to what is advertised, people actually can hear what you are listening to when you have the volume up loud enough. The multi-function button is quirky, but what can you expect from only one button. These headphones would get a better grade if I only used them for listening to audio books, podcasts, or as my headphone interface for answering calls at work and I would recommend them for these activities. However, as I use them for running and in the gym, and audio quality is very important to me, I feel there are better options available.

Shokz OpenRunPro Headphones

To be candid, I initially didn’t know anything about this product, other than that they were headphones. I am also not a highly technical person but was able to get comfortable with this product after a few days and now after 7 days of using them it’s almost second nature. The short instruction guide showed the three buttons, power/volume on the right and on the left side a Multifunction button that allows one to pause, advance, go backwards and even answer calls. More on that later.Pairing to one device is very easy, although one issue that I continue to struggle with are the times when you need to actually see the buttons but also listen to “Audrey”, the voice that provides audio guidance to users. It’s not that easy and you do feel that one needs eyes in the back of your head. Especially if you are trying to use these early in the morning outdoors.I initially paired this with my iPhone so I could test out listening to music on Spotify or Youtube. The sound isn’t great, but it is more that acceptable given the intended usage. There is a nice bass response and as I used these more and more I got comfortable with the quality.Shokz OpenRunPro are not in ear headphones. I did not know that initially, but a simple online review explained that the placement is actually in front of both ears. The intention is to place them behind your head and over the ear, but the speaker itself stays outside (the ear). It doesn’t take long to get used to it, and these are extremely durable plastic. I didn’t try to twist them but it does seem like they would be tough to break. My neighbor asked me about these when I was trying them out, and wondered why I just didn’t run or walk with my airpods. The truth is I rarely if ever take the airpods outside in a sweaty activity as they would be so easy to lose, and once one is gone then you almost have to buy another expensive pair. The Shokz being a one piece and held in place over the ears would be difficult to lose and because they aren’t in your ear the concern about them falling out due to perspiration is nil. There are a few things I would put in the suggestion box for this product. The battery life is very good, apparently about 10 hours between full charges, but you can do a quick charge with the cable provided and get a few hours boost in a matter of minutes. But the same button turns the headphones on and off. Audrey will tell you something that sounds like “Power off” but it could just as easily be “Power on”. They really should make this more distinctive. There is also a way to check the battery status, while the music is paused but I could never get that to work. It wasn’t a big deal as Audrey generally tells you the battery status when you initially power it on.There are two modes for listening, Standard (Music) and Vocal Booster (podcasts, audiobooks). I left it in Standard and the podcast sounded just fine. The instruction guide says you can switch between the two by pressing and holding both buttons at the same time until you hear a beep, but that was very difficult to accomplish. I never got that to work, but it can be done on the app if it were really important. As I said earlier, I initially paired these with my iPhone, but that weighs a fair amount so I also wanted to pair it with my iPod Touch, which is a much lighter device. There are instructions online that show how to do this, but it took me several tries and a decent amount of time before it worked. I also tried pairing this with my HP laptop, but it just didn’t work at all. I suspect it is user error or a problem with the laptop, although my airPods work perfectly so I just decided to leave it alone. The app is helpful once you’ve done the pairing and designating to the headphones which device you want to use. I am going to have to test this a few more times to make sure. The Multifunction button mutes the music quickly with one touch. That can be helpful if you need to talk to someone or just need a pause. I had less success advancing the track (hit the button twice) and even less going to the previous track (three pushes of the button). It’s a bit touchy, especially if you are working out and your hands have moisture.Walking TestREI asked me to try these outdoors three to five times. I am a long time runner, but carrying a phone or iPod to listen is tricky. My iPhone is too heavy to carry while running and wearing an arm band is not something I want to do. Making this more interesting was a lagging psoas injury that limited my running the past few weeks, so instead I just went on several walks with my wife.It is very warm in the South already. Wearing a hat, sunglasses and the Shokz requires a bit of planning but I put the headphones on first, made sure they were on and paired, then the hat and sunglasses after. A person with long hair also has to make sure they can wear these comfortably, especially if. Like my wife, uses a hairpiece.Something also to consider if using these in actual training are the multiple technologies you have at your fingertips. In my case I had my Garmin watch which I use to time myself, get lap splits and monitor heart rate/calorie burn. I also have the headphones with multiple buttons as well as the iPhone or iPod. That is a lot of things to keep straight and it can be easy to mess up if you aren’t careful. I was holding my phone while walking for an hour and on multiple occasions I managed to pause the music accidentally. At first I thought it was the Shokz, but I realized I touched something on the phone, turning off the app.The most important take away from the two walks are that the headphones work flawlessly, but if you are intending to have a conversation, you need to keep the volume well below half. Anything louder than that and you really cannot hear, even with your ear uncovered. The pause button does become your friend. But after my wife peeled off, I just used the headphones as intended with music at a suitable volume and I could still hear cars or other people. I felt very safe. I don’t know exactly how these might work if one were cycling in a peloton or running in a pack. That could be tricky.Indoor Rower TestI listened to a new (Wilco) album with Spotify. It is a 77 minute album, and it sounded fine with no connection problems. While the erg is not an outdoor activity, I had an oscillating fan behind me and the flywheel makes constant noise, so I was pleased with the ability to hear the music while also keeping my ears open in case the doorbell rang or my home phone. It helps that the rower has a cradle for the iPhone so you don’t have to carry it but have quick access if you need to get to a different app.Pool TestThe Shokz can get wet, but are not waterproof. But sitting by the pool after a swim went well. I could hear the conversation with my friends if I kept the volume around a 4 of 10, but if I really needed to talk I just hit the pause/mute button on the left. I could also see using these to listen to an audio book or catching on on a podcast.Final thoughtsInitially when I got these, I cheated and saw the retail price and was a bit surprised. Then I realized that the latest version of the airPods are more expensive and while the sound is arguably better, the risk of losing one or both of them running or cycling has always been a big deterrent. The Shokz are durable, and would be a great gift for those who want to exercise, be able to listen to music or podcasts and also have their ears available.DisclosureI opened the box and read the very daunting sticker that informed the user that the product contains BPA and could be harmful. It also directed me to a California website. I did read up on it, and before using, called a relative who actually lives in California and is aware of concerns about BPA being in plastics. But after speaking we concluded that the risk with this product is extremely low and much more prevalent in drinking glasses and bottled water. He said I should be pretty comfortable testing or using them for short periods was not going to cause any harm. Good to know.I do recommend this product.

Some positives and negatives, but overall a good product.

First off- these are very very comfortable- extremely light weight and yet with good retention. The sound quality is good- with better than average bass response. All that being said, they are *quiet*- if you listen primarily to audiobooks or podcasts at low decibels, it will be difficult to make them out. This is a function of the form-factor- they are very much open ear for the sake of situational awareness. Just be aware that certain kinds of sound media will work better than others, especially in the presence of ambient noise. The more bass you have in the media, the clearer the sound will be.Battery life is good- lasting about 2 days of moderate use.Pleased so far- but will be following up based on lifetime use, namely: how long until the batteries start to ... MoreFirst off- these are very very comfortable- extremely light weight and yet with good retention. The sound quality is good- with better than average bass response. These do have a finite lifespan, with no way to replace the onboard lithiums with fresh ones. That is my other point of contention: these are disposable- they will not last and absolutely have a finite lifespan. I wish they would make ones with replaceable batteries, or have a program that lets you mail them in to get fresh ones installed. Making items that last is preferable to generating more ewaste for the landfills, but adds more complexity to design.Whether or not I purchase more pairs of these in the future will directly depend on longevity- these are very expensive premium products (purchased the ‘pro’ model) so expectations are likewise high.

Sub-standard (worst) audio quality on Mac
8 November 2022

I bought the headphones since the were promoted with "Premium Sound Quality" and compatibility with Mac.Unfortunately, there are two very disappointing showstoppers (in a nutshell version):- the headphone mutes automatically when connecting to the mac (mitigation described below)- the headphone mutes itself in the middle of calls spontaneously (mitigation described below)- the audio quality is really sub-standard when using the mic (Shokz know, but not interested/able to fix it)---Long version:Muting when connecting to Mac:An "Aggregation Device" with the openrun pro >mic< needs to be created in the "Audio Midi Setup". This will mitigate the issue.Random Muting Issue:The Shokz support pointed me to a 3rd party chrome plugin which disables the "automatic ... MoreI bought the headphones since the were promoted with "Premium Sound Quality" and compatibility with Mac.Unfortunately, there are two very disappointing showstoppers (in a nutshell version):- the headphone mutes automatically when connecting to the mac (mitigation described below)- the headphone mutes itself in the middle of calls spontaneously (mitigation described below)- the audio quality is really sub-standard when using the mic (Shokz know, but not interested/able to fix it)---Long version:Muting when connecting to Mac:An "Aggregation Device" with the openrun pro >mic< needs to be created in the "Audio Midi Setup". Unfortunately, not every application provides such an option, so the random muting continues when using these applications. Search for "Disable Automatic Gain Control" by Joey Watts in the Chrome Web Store.Audio Quality:After several rounds with the Shokz support I got now a mail saying that they are aware about the audio issues with MacBooks but not interested or able to fix it.If i'd like to use the headset it with a Mac and want to have better audio quality, I'd should go and buy another of their headphones - the OpenComm UC. This comes with an USB plug, which is not acceptable when buying a bluetooth headset. It's 2022, not 1990. A macbook air comes with 2 usb ports, and I'm not going to block one of them permanently to use a bluetooth headset. If you manually select the laptops built-in mic, the audio quality "magically" becomes good. So it's simply a bug they're declining to fix.

Unbeatable for bike-and-run-safe listening

The Shokz OpenRun Pro Headphones I received for evaluation were well built and easy to use, even without the included instructions and documentation. All I had to do was plug the charging cable into my computer and attach the magnetic plug to the headphones and wait for the charge to go to full. My phone found the headphones with no trouble and paired even without having to download the Shokz app first, and even after downloading the app, I didn’t ever really need to use it in order to use the headphones. The headphones themselves are comfortable and stay put. I didn’t ever have to readjust them while running, hiking, or riding bike, and the headset did not interfere with my cycling helmet. The headphones themselves are comfortable and stay put. I didn’t ever have to readjust them while running, hiking, or riding bike, and the headset did not interfere with my cycling helmet. It did get a little crowded with both headphones and dark glasses above my ears, but both still functioned fine. The good thing about an evaluation pair means that I didn’t start with any preconceptions of how I wanted to use them, which left me free to find and evaluate the headphones merits. This is good, because these bone induction headphones probably shouldn’t be evaluated in comparison to normal headphones. They have their own strengths and uses. These won't replace my regular headphones for everyday use. Most of the criticisms I’ve read in other reviews online seem to come from expecting that they will. The open-ear design of these means that you get the full range of your normal hearing and all the ambient noise of your environment. On a morning run I could hear the birds in the trees and the footsteps of other runners and every car and bike that crossed my path, and each of these made it a bit harder to hear the music that was playing on my headphones. That’s the real draw of these is the situational awareness. I was able to hike with my wife and have a normal conversation while listening to music without it bothering her or disturbing anyone else on the trail. The noise bleed from the headphones was minimal. The music was less of a presence, but it was there as a part of the environment – just inside my head instead of coming from around me. To get that, though, you lose the sound isolation of normal headphones, so your music is going to be less audible if your environment is competing for attention. I could not hear music at all at normal level while next to running water. The white noise drowned it out.The biggest thing to get used to was the difference in sound quality. These do not sound like regular headphones. I’ve seen people complain that the bass was not very present and that the sound was tinny, but in my experience I found that a lot of that depends on the music you are listening to and the placement of the phones on your temples. With most of my music I was getting a full range of clear and pleasing sound from bass to treble. It sounds more articulate and detailed than regular headphones, but with a bit less depth. With a very compressed recording where all the instruments are crowded and loud, the midrange does start to dominate the highs and lows and leave the music seeming less full, but with a more open and balanced recording, the sound and detail are all quite impressive, especially in quiet surroundings. I sometimes hear details in them that are hard to make out in my studio headphones. I actually find myself listening to old music in them at night just to find new things to discover in familiar tunes.Overall, I love these headphones for what they are. As a set of mobile headphones for use on the run or on bike, they are great, especially if you were trying to listen to a podcast or needed to talk on the phone while exercising (speech is very clear). And with the ears open, you don’t have to worry if your batteries run out the way that you would with noise cancelling earphones that have a safety mode that lets in some surrounding noise. And they are also really great if you like music while on a hike, but don’t want to lose the sound of the environment and don’t want to be one of those people who ruin the solitude for everyone around them. I would not want to use them for all listening as my only headphones, but they are excellent in their role.

Usage for the hearing impaired.
5 August 2022

Usage: I purchased the Shokz-OpenRun Pro for the longer battery life. I do find this is adequate if barely for a day's use. I am totally deaf in one ear so wearing the standard earpieces leaves me with very few choices. I purchased with the hope I would have the ability to hear other conversations, safety while driving etc. For the most part this has been true. The volume is lacking with background noises going on but with only one ear I think the average person will get double the sound and won't need more volume.Comfort: The wrap around over the ears works pretty good for the eye glass users. It may take a while for the user to get used to the pressure of the sound conductor against the side of the face. It may take a while for the user to get used to the pressure of the sound conductor against the side of the face. In fact, Eye Glass wearers may get used to the pressure faster than non-users. Hey, now you get a taste of the nose rests we deal with. They are comfortable enough I accidently got into the shower with them on and there were no issues afterwards.Issues: While the streaming works perfectly I am plagued with disconnects while using on phone calls. While streaming will last for hours, phone calls may last a couple minutes to 15 minutes before losing contact with the phone (Apple). The worst thing is you get no warning like "Disconnecting" etc. It is not disconnecting the call itself so if I am close enough to the phone my customers can still hear me. I do not necessarily think this is the head set but maybe.Adjustability: There is no adjustability at all. For me this is ok. For someone who has a small head, there may be an issue. I have talked with others who swear the tightness gives them a headache. I have not had that happen to me, however you do have to have the conductor in exactly the right place to get the full volume, so there must be some pressure to keep it there.Quality: Unlike some earbuds, I get sound from both sides even though I can only hear in one ear. Most people don't even realize they only get sound in the left side if they have a wired headset. I get the full sound in both sides, so I doubt I get stereo, but i used to have to turn my left air buds upside to get sound in my right ear.Final thoughts. This is by far the best headset I have used. While not perfect due to losing the connection and inability to attach to multiple devices with instant connections, it is adequate for my needs. If my phone calls did not drop, I would give this a really high mark.
