When I also watched the detailed review by dustin abbot on youtube I knew this would most likely become my next lens to relief my GAS Ive been having. Dustin also mentioned that this lens produces somewhat close to what you get out of a 200m F2. I have attached photos I took outdoors with only natural light, no flash used. It really blew me away coming home and seeing just how much detail this lens throws at you.Vignetting: Its really incredible how you have virtually no vignetting even at F/1.4 with this all due to the big front element. Applying the lightroom lens profile does a wonderful job and slightly brightens the image too so be careful to not shoot too slow of a shutter speed. I find that shooting around 1/800 to 1/1250 sec tens to be ideal on my Nikon D810.What I dont like:Close focusing: Seriously this is kinda more nitpicking but I wish the lens focused just a bit closer. I know though that the Nikon 105 1.4e focuses pretty much same distance as the sigma so there isnt much to complain about really. I can pretty much do headshots with this filling the frame and that is just awesome.Les cap: The supplied lens cap by sigma is a bit disappointing. I was expect something a bit more premium. Maybe I will replace it with something else in the future but for now this will be fine.

Upon opening the box and fitted case I thought I was looking at a Headlamp for a 1932 Maxwell. This lens is HUGE.It is also heavy. It is hard to explain but you definitely get the sense that this is quality throughout.Before even attaching this to my D-850 I knew I was going to Love this lens and I am NOT disappointed. They call this the Bokeh Master Lens for good reason. The auto focus is fast and quiet.Images are stellar.The nicely engineered Tripod Bracket is perfectly balanced and for my use I will probably leave it attached to the lens most of the time as it is also a great assist when balancing the lens/camera body.Many of the reviewers have commented on the size and weight but I find it actually help's in holding the camera still. The right eye is tack sharp; however, If I had hesitated once focus was achieved, I may have lost the sharpness. Even with continuous focus enabled, the extreme shallow DOF can be a challenges. Lastly, this is a lot of glass - AF speed is not world-class and will vary based on your camera system. Not recommended for sports.Summary; used for what this lens is meant for delivers fabulous results. Price makes this a no-brainer of you have a need for this type of focal length coverage.

So the name is still a bit sketchy in my brain. But of course, the ART series are entirely different.The first thing I needed to figure out, was what focal length to put my money in to. The obvious choices are 85, 105, and 135 (or the 200 F2 if you have deep pockets). I tend to shoot tighter than most portrait shooters, so I tend to shoot closer to the 135-200 range. But my indoor studio is only 20 feet long, and if I were to ever need to shoot somebody head to toe, the 135 is too long. So I decided the 105 is right in the middle, kind of the sweet spot for portraits, allowing a tighter shot if you want, but not having to back up TOO far to get something more broad, like a waste up or full body. The 105 is the first focal length in the range that eliminates distortions of people's faces. Even the 85 can if you're up too close. So the 105 was my choice.When you first open the box and pull this thing out, you are a bit taken away by it's size. My jaw was stuck to my lap. When I showed my wife, her first words were holycrap! It's huge. I'm talking... really big, and weighs a ton. This is not a backpacking kind of lens. The build quality is also a bit shocking. It feels like you're holding a Ferrari in your hands. The front element is HUGE at 105mm. It's amazing that it is heavier than my nikkor 70-200 2.8 VRII considering it doesn't have VR, and isn't a zoom. There is a LOT of glass in this thing, which is why I call it the bokeh beast.When I first started shooting with it, I quickly noticed that I was missing focus.. a lot. Only a tiny percentage of my shots were keepers. So the next thing I did of course was set up my fine tune target and do an in-camera focus fine tune with my D850. Sure enough, it was a bit off. Corrected, and back to shooting I went. BUT, I was still getting a LOT of missed focus. Sometimes it would hit (more than before), but I was still getting quite a bit of front-focus. Back to the test target, and I figured out that the further away I got from my test target, the more and more the lens would front focus. So my in-camera fine-tune was only good for standing in one exact spot. So, I ordered the Sigma USB dock and used it to set the focus at 4 different intervals, and finally, I am getting good focus keeper rates. If you're considering this lens, buy the dock right out of the gate.The worst thing about this lens, is it's relatively average focus. It's not slow, but it's not fast. If I am trying to get shots of my kids moving around, my keeper rate is low. For moving subjects, this lens will give you a lower than average keeper rate for sure. Nowhere near as fast and snappy as my 24-70 or 70-200. Having said that, once tuned with the dock, the focus IS accurate, and I hit 100% on objects that don't move. It's a challenge with my 2 year old.The only other negative I can give this lens, which is nit picking, is this lens under-exposes on both my cameras (D4 and D850) by about a third of a stop. Not a big deal, just something to keep in mind.The best part about this lens, is of course, the image quality. When conditions are right and your subjects are cooperative, the IQ of this thing just can't be beat. First, the lens is RAZOR sharp. I'm talking scary sharp. I am a bit of a pixel peeper, and the first time I looked at a well focused 100% crop, I was in shock. Not only is it razor sharp, it produces amazingly beautifully rendered images with great colors, accurate skin tones, and the most amazing IF to OOF transition you have ever seen. The bokeh this lens produces is god-like, maybe even better than my 85mm 1.4D cream machine from years ago. When you combine tac sharpness, with beautiful rendering, and gorgeous bokeh, you end up with the master of all portrait lenses. Which is exactly what this thing is.In summary - Heavy, Cumbersome, Pretty, A+ build quality, A+ IQ, A+ color rendering, A+ micro-contrast, A+ sharpness, A+ bokeh, B- focus speed/snappiness. As a professional Real Estate and Portrait photographer with a new Canon R5 body I was looking to fill the void of an ideal portrait lens. I read a ton about this lens and while I'd all but decided upon the Canon RF85mm f1.2L, I wanted to work with this lens to see if it's all that was reviewed and written about it. I already had the EF to R adapter for the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 DG HSM lens I'd gotten for my Real Estate use, so there would be no need to get another adapter. First off I shot our pet house bunny to see what it rendered in character. Right from the get go it blew me away. The depth of field to work with is simply incredible. You can virtually eliminate the background if desired or stop it down to maintain complete focus of the subject and STILL get a ... MoreAs a professional Real Estate and Portrait photographer with a new Canon R5 body I was looking to fill the void of an ideal portrait lens. I read a ton about this lens and while I'd all but decided upon the Canon RF85mm f1.2L, I wanted to work with this lens to see if it's all that was reviewed and written about it. I already had the EF to R adapter for the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 DG HSM lens I'd gotten for my Real Estate use, so there would be no need to get another adapter. First off I shot our pet house bunny to see what it rendered in character. Right from the get go it blew me away. The depth of field to work with is simply incredible. You can virtually eliminate the background if desired or stop it down to maintain complete focus of the subject and STILL get a wonderfully out of focus background to allow one to concentrate on the subject without jittery backgrounds. The microcontrast on this lens is surgical. The build quality is Rolls Royce all the way. Yes it's a heavy beast and if you don't have decent arm strength look elsewhere, but you'll be missing out. The included Arca Swiss tripod bracket is a work of art and build quality. Balances the lens perfectly with a flash mounted on the camera as well. The eye autofocus speed is just as it is in the native lenses. This model lens also supports all the native Canon lens corrections if you're doing Jpeg. It just oozes quality and precision which is a real treat. For more than a $1000 less then the Canon RF85 I am quite convinced I made the right move.

I got their last copy.If you are someone who doesnt like a heavy lens and trust me, this lens is heavy, just move on. I dont understand some reviewers crying about the weight of the lens. Did they not read the specs before buying or renting the lens?Anyways.. from using the lens on a few low light and outside portraits I am blow away. The sharpness is on par or better with any Canon mount medium telephotos out there except for maybe Otus 85mm (I have never used that lens) Milvus probably also outperforms this lens in terms of micro contrast and sharpness. (I see a little bit of cat's eye round balls on the edges of the pictures but absolutely none in the middle. Also zero onion rings)Having said that Ive read somewhere that this lens was made to compete with Zeiss in astro photography as well, but thats not really something I know very much about.Bottom line is this lens just delivers.. That large front element is forcing me to add lot more vignette in post than any other lens I own LOLIf you dont mind the weight of the lens ( I am somebody who doesnt mind the weight as long as there is performance and build quality that justifies the weight) you are going to love this lens period.
Great lense, well built, sharp out out of the box!!! Superb ratio of quality and price. I don't find this lens heavy - works for me, it's not lightweight piece of glass of course, but for me it's perfect balance. autofocus works great on Canon R5 and Canon 5D Mark IV. Lense have enough speed to track eye even on fast moving dogs.B&H as always doing great job and fast delivery!
Watch any YouTube video, and you'll soon find out a few things about this lens. True to the trials, this is one sharp lens. Beautiful and worthy of portraits. Just know that this is a fixed 105. My suggestion would be to use a 70-200 or other zoom lens and leave it at 105. Get used to shooting at that length. Does this suit your needs? Do you find that yours having to back away further than you'd like from your subject in order to get the shot you want? If you find that you are comfortable with this length, or have shot at similar distances with perhaps a 100mm, this would make an interesting choice.I carried this lens all day in Texas in the summer. Street photography. It is not the best choice for that. It IS an attention getter, and it doesn't always land shots ... It's not as bad as some I have seen going on and on about it... However, if you decided you were going to use this lens exclusively at a wedding or some event where you are hoisting this around for 8 hours (why would you?) Then you'll be more than happy to set it down at the end of the day, for sure.But if you have a specific purpose, and have considered all the elements involved, I can say that I highly recommend this sigma 105. Beautiful portraits, and great in low light.
Purchased the Signa 105mm f1.4 to pair with a 1Dx mk iii for slightly more reach during outdoor portrait shoots; however, it is paying itself off for headshots as well indoors. Auto focus is accurate and fast. Sharpness and contrast excellent. The lens is moderately heavy and slightly bulky, but the results out weigh this for me. While I prefer to shoot primarily free hand, the Arca compatible tripod collar makes switching from free hand to tripod fast, and the collar is removable! Would I purchase this lens again: Definitely!
Everyone knows this lens needs to go on a diet, so I won't say anything else about that part. We're using it in large catholic churches, attached to a Canon R7. What this effectively does is give us 170mm of reach BUT with 2 full stops of light MORE than you'd get on the RF 70-200. It is a game changer.I really don't use it that much at a reception, because my RF 28-70 is hard to turn away from, once I have off camera flash, but for what I do use it for, nothing can touch it.
