A Must Have Purchase For All

The common belief is that the more general an item's uses are, the less quality that will be gotten for each purpose (why pros use fixed focal lengths much of the time). However, for casual photographers and photo enthusiasts like myself, this kind of lens is a must have. It is also something every pro should have. I will never need to buy another one. Being able to take wide-view shots of the city skyline from the top of the Empire State Building, and yet seconds later being able to zoom in on a taxi and street sign 4 blocks and 86 stories away was an awesome experience. This lens has taken over as my main lens, and I will be taking it to Italy in a few days. My area of focus in photography is lanscapes and architecture, although I have recently started to get into motion shots and event photography. This lens is great for all of those. If you are looking for something convenient, yet still high quality and with consistent output, get this lens. And get this one over the manufacturer's version, and especially the Tamron one. It was on sale for$ when I bought it, and it has already proven to be well worth it.

A great lens for the price.

I like the versatility of a zoom lens, with a number of focal lengths within one unit. The housing, although plastic, seems very solid. It's compact and easy to store in the camera bag.

A nice find... very happy with purchase!

I go to construction jobsites and take close-up pictures of heavy equipment and work in progress. In order to achieve this I was walking around with the two lenses, switching back and forth multiple times in a dusty environment, which I didn't think was great for the camera as lenses were switched back and forth. Since many reviewers purchased this lens for the same or similar reasons, I bought it. What I have found is exactly what I had hoped for. I may eventually purchase a nicer zoom then the one I currently have, and would likely opt for the Sigma for that lens too. I am not a pro photographer, but have been an avid photo enthusiast for 25 years. I have been using it for a good couple weeks now, and though I haven't put it through its complete paces, I haven't had any gripes to speak of. While some with greater needs for photography may find some shortcomings, I personally find this to be a fantastic all purpose lens for my needs.

EXCELLENT GENERAL PURPOSE LENS
7 February 2012

As described, it's a superb walk-around or vacation lens. With a focal length from 18mm to 200mm (27-300mm APS-C), there is little you'd miss on a daily basis. It's light weight and comparatively short so you won't be worn out at the end of the day. It's become my stand-by lens when I know I'll need the extra zoom length, but use my Zeiss 16-80mm lens about 85% of the time. When the camera is set for multiple focus points in low light situations, the lens searches longer than I'd like before locking in. If the camera is set on spot focus the lens locks in immediately. I consider this normal for a f/3.5 lens. I'm shooting with a Sony A-580. I'm really not concerned with auditory noise and find this lens to be about the same as my other lenses, perhaps a bit quieter? ... MoreAs described, it's a superb walk-around or vacation lens. I'm really not concerned with auditory noise and find this lens to be about the same as my other lenses, perhaps a bit quieter? - again, I really don't notice it either way. In terms of image quality I'd give it a 7 on a 10 point scale. It's not a prime lens, nor is it expensive. It delivers good color reproduction as would be expected, but tack sharp would not be a term I'd use particularly if enlarging your prints beyond 8x10. Obviously the camera/sensor and ISO you use has an impact on the results. This lens has a lens-lock to prevent lens creep when hanging on your neck. I've not found it to be necessary after several months of use, but I have other lenses that suffer from this problem so it's nice to know this Sigma will never have that problem. Overall: I love the lens and the price can't be beat.

Good Choice Walk Around Lens
7 January 2011

Unfortunately, there is no "perfect" lens out there. With a lot of research into zoom lenses that met my requirements, I finally decided this Sigma was the best compromise available. I wanted optical stabilization, a wide zoom range (35mm equiv. 30mm - 135mm min.), decent optical quality, and a sub $500 price. Other lens models beat this one in some ways, but none could match or exceed all requirements, especially price. The "excellent" rating I gave is relative to the same type lenses available for a Canon EOS Digital model. Now that I own it and have used it for a month, I generally like it quite a bit. I use it on a Canon 60D and an older 20D mostly for scenic and wildlife photos. Its optical quality easily beats my older 18-200mm non-OS Sigma. It is the first wide range zoom I have owned that has good optical quality at the long end of its range. Usually the upper 25% return mediocre results and often seem to be unusable beyond snapshot size. Focus is quiet and fast. On the cons side, it is a little heavy (most are) and the zoom ring is a little stiff (no creep though). If you want a single walk around, do most everything lens, then in my opinion this or the Canon 18-135mm kit lens are the best choices. If money is no object then happy hunting.

Good Quality Lens
1 June 2014

Bought the Sigma F/3.5-6.3 18-200mm Lens as I has a mishap with my Sony 18-200mm. The price was very good and my experience with the 18-200mm as a walk around lens has been great. I must say the Sigma lens was far better than I expected. I use it on my new Sony a65 and the photos are far sharper than my previous lens. the zoom barrel takes a little breaking in but smooths out just fine. I especially like the locking feature as I wear a CottonCarrier vest and my old lens kept extending when held in a vertical position - with the lock system, this is no longer a problem. I really like the lens and am very satisfied with it. It is my first Sigma lens, so I know I will be buying other lenses made by them in the future. Great for DSLR filming and photography as well

Great lens. I'm an archaeology student and filming my first archaeological documentary called "Inside Jerusalem" through Archaeology101.me - shooting with a Canon 7D and filmed a walk through Hezekiah's tunnel and replica inscriptions under the ancient city of Jerusalem with the 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS for Canon lens plus a Merlin Steadicam. The footage turned out great and quality is excellent in HD on my iMac/Final Cut Studio. The lens is massive and strong and really produced a nice image - I've filmed with Canon wide-angle and Nikon 50mm in this project, and value the Sigma as well. Great lens for weddings
5 September 2011

I specialize in wedding and portrait photography. When I bought my Nikon D80 I realized that dust could be a problem so I bought the Sigma 18-200 OS so I would not have to change lenses and reduce the exposure to dust. It has never been removed from the D80. It is a great lens. I can use the wide angle from the balcony of a church and then zoom in for the ring exchange. Events happen fast at weddings and the wide zoom range of this lens is precious.I can't complain about the sharpness. My photos are acceptably sharp even at 16" x 24" and most clients order 11" x 17" or smaller. The lens is much slower focusing and the image is dim due the the small maximum aperture. Then I often find it necessary to switch to manual focusing (zone focusing) and shoot at wider angles to preserve depth of field.Colors and contrast are excellent. I have used it outdoors at weddings but not on vacations. It should be a great and versatile multi-purpose lens.I would recommend this lens to anyone, amateur, pro, or in-between.

The only lens you will need.

I am a professional photographer and do a considerable amount of wedding and portrait photography. I use this lens continuously. It allows me to take photos of the entire front of a church from the balcony and then zoom in to the couple's ring exchange. Zoom lenses of this focal range usually lose resolution, expecially at the telephoto end, but this lens is remarkably sharp at all focal lengths. It may lose a little, but it is not noticeable in photos enlarged to 16" x 20". The Sigma weighs less, which may not sound like much of an advantage until you have to carry it and camera around your neck all day long. Then these ounces make a difference. Durability? I have used several Sigma lenses over the years, have never worn one out, and never had a problem with any of them. It may break tomorrow, but I put a lot of faith in Sigma quality. (Sure, but I also carry backup camera bodies, lenses, flashes, frames, etc. when on assignment.)

excellent general purpose lens
8 March 2011

I bought this lens in advance of a vacation in Hawaii. I wanted an all-in-one lens rather than carrying 2 separate lens during this vacation. My other 2 lenses were the original Sony 18-70mm and a Sigma 70-200mm. The first lens arrived and had a small blemish in the center of the front optics, so I returned it for a replacement. The second lens arrived in good condition. My point of comparison was my wife's Panasonic FX35 super-zoom camera. She could take wide angle or close-up photographs without changing her lens. I wanted something similar with my DSLR. I shot about 1500 frames in various situations ranging from bright sunlight to moonlight to sunrise to sunset and even pitch darkness, and this lens proved itself very well. I wanted something similar with my DSLR. I shot about 1500 frames in various situations ranging from bright sunlight to moonlight to sunrise to sunset and even pitch darkness, and this lens proved itself very well. I'm not a professional photographer, but I know enough to use many of the manual adjustments such as shutter priority, aperture priority, white balance, etc, but the majority of my photographs were with the fully automatic mode. This lens did it all for me on this vacation. From wide landscape photographs from a helicopter to closeups of flowing lava and breaching whales. In one over-exposed, night-time photograph of molten lava (with tripod), the lens' internal reflections produced an artistic round circle the size of the frame and centered. This was dumb luck and looked eerily beautiful. I shortened the exposure, and the circle disappeared. Other reviews have mentioned a few negatives on which I'll comment now. Slow to focus - agreed, it's a little slower than my original Sony 18-70mm, but generally not perceptible. Zoom creep - agreed, but this happened only when the camera was hanging from my neck, and the zoom was left extended more than 50%. I fully retracted the zoom and did not have to use the lock to hold it in place even when hiking over rugged terrain like lava fields. Its only deficient feature is its slow f-rating. It becomes even more noticeable with a polarizing filter. This of course affects the camera's ability to auto-focus in very low light conditions. Again, this is not a significant deficiency, just something I noticed. Removing the polarizer helped significantly. Of course, a faster f-rating would probably increase the lens' weight. This lens is heavier than and about the same size as my 18-70mm but lighter and shorter than my 70-200mm. It was not too tiring to have this hanging from my neck all day. The benefits of this lens far out-weigh its nominal extra weight. Overall, I'm very pleased, and this is now my standard everyday lens on this camera.
