I am a professional fine art Nature photographer who is used to carrying substantial equipment in my backpack. But, sometimes, I really enjoy traveling light. I have only had this lens for a week. But, I am already impressed. For landscapes, Its field of view is slightly larger than for a 50mm lens but still avoids the over-emphasis of foreground objects associated with wide angle lenses. It is light and compact, but all metal and really well designed and constructed.Importantly, its superior image quality puts it in the top class of normal lenses. In the photographs that I've taken so far, there is almost no significant difference in sharpness and contrast between the edges and corners compared with the center when stopped down to the optimum aperture of f5.6. ... It focuses more closely (9.45) than most normal lenses; and I like the way that it works with my Sony A7rM4 where I have the option of using a C-size image of 28MP making the 45mm lens an effective 68mm lens, thereby enhancing its close-up ability.This lens is a great choice for street photography, landscapes, close-ups, portraits, and even some wildlife subjects, and when used with a compact mirrorless camera, it's small size and low weight makes it effortless to carry it with you in any environment.The attached images were made at f5.6.

This lens is built very well. Solid and has a nice expensive high quality feel to it. The aperture ring is a nice touch. One star deduction as it is kind of soft wide open. At f2.8 it should be tack sharp but it most definitely is not. At f4 and beyond it's fantastic.

I love the quality and size of this lens. It is a terrific walk-around lens for my Sony A9. It isn't the sharpest lens out there - especially wide open, but in good light where you can stop down to 5.6 or 8 the photos have a great feel to them. It nice having manual control over aperture on the lens where it belongs. I also have the new Sony 35mm 1.8 which is a bit sharper but the 45mm provides a nice compromise between wide angle and standard perspective. It is compact and lightweight yet has a solid build and a smooth focusing wheel. It reminds me of the sense of quality construction I feel when using the lens on my RX1R M2. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase!
I tested the Zeiss Batis 40/2.0 when it first came out. It is a very nice lens but too big for a walk about and too expensive for me for a novelty focal length. The Rokinon 45 was great for size, but the extremely tight fit concerned me and the resolving power fell short of the a7III sensor. So, I thought I was finished with this focal length until Sigma announced the 45/2.8 and got my attention, especially with the minimum focus distance.I've had the lens for a couple of weeks. The size and and weight are perfect for the a7 and build quality is excellent. This lens feels good. It's plenty sharp and the minimum focusing distance allows for some creative imaging. definitely not the same as a Leica APO 50mm but a neat compact AF lens. Great “walk around” lens.All metal body and sturdy!Soft on edges wide open and portrait like quality micro softness in center. This lens may or may not work on 1st Generation Sony a7x bodies. I had two consecutive lenses lose their ability to focus altogether after a few days of normal use. Both times it happened shortly after changing the focusing mode via the camera. The first lens went back to Adorama, the second I sat with for a few days, wondering if I was just reaaaaally unlucky, or if there was a compatibility issue. And, yes- I performed every last troubleshooting step I could think of, including (but not limited to) cleaning the contacts, trying every different combination of focusing modes via lens and camera, using brand-new batteries, and a factory reset. I recalled that video is AF-C by default, which confirms my theory that the lens simply does not play well with changes made via the camera.So, you may be asking.... why? Why would anyone put up with this? Furthermore, why would anyone put up with this from a $[xxx] lens that only goes to f/2.8 when there is (according to most of the Internet) a much "better" 45mm f/1.8 lens for a couple hundred dollars less?I will attempt to answer that. Without going overboard on listing my qualifications and tallying my gear list, I'll tell you that I'm a complete, unapologetic Lens Snob. However, my snobbery doesn't derive from lenses that champion MTF charts, or easily quantifiable data points like f-stop numbers, but from the subtleties. Handling. Rendering. That "B" word everyone hates. Transition zones. That sort of thing. If I don't like the way a lens *feels* in my hand, I'll leave it on the shelf.Sigma is not a company that needs to prove it knows how to make sharp lenses. It's not a company that needs to prove it can make fast lenses. It's already done plenty of those, often with size and price being de-prioritized to those ends. This lens' design was focused solely on creating a lens with the best *rendering* in a small, beautifully-crafted package. If you'd like to read about the design philosophy from one of the engineers behind it, Google "Ohsone's Anecdotes Episode 6" because I can't link it.I rented this lens for a weekend gig and I was absolutely HOOKED. The all-metal build, aperture ring, size/weight combo was glorious, but the rendering was unlike anything I'd ever seen. Buttery smooth backgrounds, even at f/4-f/5.6, where most lenses get gnarly. Tones that could melt butter. Even the busiest, jagged and geometric transition zones were rendered as silk. Like the classic Sonnars, but with more "pop" where it counts, more edge to the points in focus. ZERO CA. Flare when you really were *trying* to get flare.So, is this really an "overpriced" lens, as so many out there are claiming? Let's consider, for a moment, the competition. The Sony 35mm f/2.8, which, even 5 years or so after its release, is listed at around $[xxx] new. And we really don't need to re-hash all the technical issues that lens has, for all its adherents. The new 35mm f/1.8? Also $[xxx]. The 55/1.8 (aka CA MONSTER)? $[xxxx]. And, sure. The Elephant in the Room. The Samyang/Rokinon 45mm f/1.8. Sure, yeah- that one is $[xxx]. It's also EXTREMELY harsh in the transition zones, has no aperture ring, and is likely, quite literally held together with glue (ask Roger at LensRentals about that) So there's that. But hey, if you want to save a couple hundred bucks on arguably the most important element (pun intended) in your gear bag, or don't want to lower your shutter speed or boost your ISO in low light, it's an option, sure.This Sigma? I am not sure why so many reviews are critical of this lens. It is seriously awesome. It is sharp, lightweight, but really really well-built. It is a great walk-around lens and excellent for my fine art. I have sold a bunch of prints taken with this lens in a gallery.
First off, this seems to be a well made lens. It?s all metal and feels solid. Even the lens hood is metal and chunky.Image quality is good but not great. As many reviews have noted, it?s soft wide open. Stopping down definitely helps, but it?s never going to be the sharpest lens in your bag. The bokeh is definitely smooth and nice, though. But apparently that was the intention the lens designers had?bokeh quality over tack-sharpness.Even though the lens is solidly built, it?s small and thus not too heavy. It feels good on the camera (Sony a7ii in my case). The AF/MF switch is nice too.If you go in not expecting a pro-quality lens, and you like smooth bokeh over tack-sharpness, you?ll be happy with it. Especially if you get it on sale.
I bought this lens to keep on my SonyA7RIV as a standard normal lens. What I did not expect was that if the sensor is set on APS-C, the lens does quite well as a macro lens. When set for full-frame use, the lens focuses down to 1:4. On APS-C the close focusing approaches 1:2.5 and as only the central portion of the image is used, the image quality is superior, because of the 61mp full-frame sensor. I am truly pleased with this camera-lens combination, and would recommend it.
