I have a couple of good, expensive Nikon brand lenses, but just wasn't sure I could shell out the extra $ when I could get the equivalent Sigma 85mm. After talking to a VERY knowledgeable B&H employee for 45 minutes for my whole commute home, he told me the Sigma was actually superior to the Nikon for several reasons (which I can't remember!) and seeing as I don't make a living doing photography, it seemed like a no-brainer. He was able to place my order for the Sigma 85mm right then and there, as well as suggest the best filter, and everything was delivered the next day by 10:30 am!. He even game me some shooting tips. I used the lens for my shoot and it worked great! The photos came out better than I had expected and I'm very happy with my purchase. I have to say B&H customer service ROCKS - you can't go wrong!

I love Sigma lenses and this is a dream for portrait work. So bright and so rugged. It is a dream lens. Particularly wanted for the wide aperture after persevering with mid range zooms. The is almost zero chromatic aberration which cannot be said for zooms. Feels like a battleship compared to Canon lens - really well built. Delighted with it.

I managed to get an excellent condition second-hand lens, hardly used and in perfect working order. This Sigma 85mm is a quite heavy, but that is simply down to the components and glass used. It produces excellent results, the picture quality is outstanding and a superb choice for portrait photography. I have experienced some "searching" when using AF, but this can be easily rectified with the immediate manual override feature if needed. Manual focus can be a little unforgiving as the focus ring is very rigid and the cylinder range extremely tight, however when used correctly, delivers amazing results. Aperture range and bokeh are excellent, providing distinct focal wash and crystal clear target areas. I am very happy with this lens and would highly recommend it.
I use this lens for occasional indoor and outdoor portraits, street scenes and some photojournalism. Size, weight and durability are very good. Sharpness at the center (optical axis) is excellent, possibly better than the Nikon 85mm f1.4. Sharpness falls off moderately beyond 15-18 mm from the center, though. This may not matter if blurring the background is the objective. Color is very good. Auto focus is excellent when light and contrast are above minimum but slows down in dim light and on low-contrast scenes and objects. Manual focus is to me minimally stiff which can cause some frustration when manually focusing precisely in low light as I often do. If you plan on using this as your main working lens for a variety of applications, consider the Nikon too, if you ... The light capturing capacity of this lens makes a big difference. Of course it has a shallow depth of field when the aperture is wide open which can make it difficult to focus on the right spot but its autofocus is good and this visual effect is great. It does not have vibration reduction VR technology. It is heavy. With fixed focal length it produces very high quality images but if you want to frame your shot you have to run back and forth or crop it in post-processing. However the quality of the results make all this worth it. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting super high ... And I had the same unfortunate experience with the 50mm f/1.4 that many had had - significant front-focusing at the larger apertures and closer distances. I returned it and decided that the 85mm focal length suited me better, and so with considerable trepidation went ahead and ordered it. When it arrived, in a minute I was putting it through some careful autofocus tests, all of which it passed brilliantly! What a relief and a reassurance that it is possible to get a cood copy. It kills them, renders the lens useless! - The extra hood extension for DX lenses is only a burden. It fits on the lens very loosely and just gets in the way, especially when you try to put it into your backpack/bag with the hood reversed on the lens. I have the same issue with the 70-200mm f2.8 OS lens hood extension. Noble idea, however, in real life, just annoying and an extra irritating factor, so I put it aside, never to be used again. I've read a couple of reviews and checked out videos, but nobody mentioned the horrible and extreme color fringing this lens produces. There is no way going around it. It just destroys the images! Outdoor it becomes a nightmare, however, indoors under multiple flash lighting for portraits, it really does shine! A completely different experience! However, for this type of expensive lens most users would expect and demand a lot more usage as only to be used for pro-setup portrait. If you want a lens for low light, the f1.4 might sound tempting, but you won't get much use out of it. I wish I could attach some of the pictures I took with it, coming right out of the store, just to show the real life horror that this lens produces for a simple user outdoors, then how well it performs under flash light as a portrait lens. I'm going to give it another try with white balance and other adjustments like color processing, but if I can't use it for anything else than for portraits alone, then probably I'll have to return it, because for this price it is just too expensive for a single purpose lens. And last, the focus is very erratic, sometimes it finds the target, sometimes it would not. When it does, you get an amazingly super sharp image with fantastic details! When it wouldn't find the target, you get .... mad, which will happen quite often! Bottom line: For an average user and even intermediate photographer, I would NOT recommend this lens at all, first and foremost, because of the... ... TERRIBLE COLOR FRINGING! :-(

The lens was in its original package with additional bubble wrap and shipping box. As it is grey import there is always a little chance that you might have some extra hustle in the case you need to return it under warranty - how realistic is it to buy at 30% lower price and to expect the highest possible service. But then again this lens is top notch, high quality so expect to receive a fantastic piece of glass, in my opinion the chance of anything going wrong is neglictable and it's well worth the "risk".
