I bought this as a short tele lens for use when photographing landscapes in the main. My first concern was to get a high quality lens that was not as big and bulky as (say) an 85mm 1.4 and whose performance was great at F5.6 or 8, whereas many 85/90mm lenses are best between f2.8 and 4.This is a very compact lens (like a 50mm) with classic styling (aperture ring, etc) that delivers very sharp images. It seems very well built and gives the feeling of old fashioned quality. It has a maximum aperture of 2.8 which makes it a little less useful if you are into low light photography but then you can always raise your ISO. Close up you need to stop down a bit to maintain quality but otherwise it's very sharp, even wide open. It is also very nice on an A7c.If you are into travel, hiking or just need a lighter kitbag, this is a no-brainer - buy it!

Despite its small size and metal body, the 90mm f2.8 doesn't meet the quality levels of the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.4. Maybe because of its smaller aperture and lack of anti-vibration controls, the other lenses don't hunt and they produce (for me) fewer blurred images. A 90mm lens really needs VR. At this point I'm waiting for Sigma (or any of the other major brands) to produce a 105mm f4 with VR that small, light, and under $800 for L mounts.

One of my first Sigma lenses and I use this on the SL2-S. I love everything about this lens. It's sharp, has great colors and it's small size is a blessing. Balances nicely on my Leica. I may have to buy the entire i-series for my primes.

I absolutely love this lens. It is sharp as hell, small, fast enough for almost any situation, and darn good looking! Love the aperture ring on the lens and the M/AF switch. Coupled with a 16mm macro tube it makes a great lens for close up photos. I have other good lenses but this one pretty much stays on my A7RII since I bought it. Oh, did I say I love it!! - Just buy it - you wont be sorry!!
Sigma has something special here with the new DG DN Contemporary i Lenses for the L Mount (and Sony E Mount). I am using it on a Leica SLS-2.As many others have said, the build quality is something to behold down to every detail including the hood and the magnetic cap (both heavy-duty). All of it is built with precision. The AF is instant and silent, but even more amazing is its manual focus ability. It's focus-by-wire, but it's smooth, well dampened and feels really good with a long and very precise focus throw. I'm impressed. What has surprised me is that the lens shows some character. It's modern and very sharp with a very pleasant out-of-focus rendering, but instead of being clinical, it's more balanced between displaying a modern sharpness and draw, mixed ... MoreSigma has something special here with the new DG DN Contemporary i Lenses for the L Mount (and Sony E Mount). It's modern and very sharp with a very pleasant out-of-focus rendering, but instead of being clinical, it's more balanced between displaying a modern sharpness and draw, mixed with some emotion. It's very nice. The 90mm here makes me want to try some other focal lengths in this line. The lenses aren't inexpensive, but they're not expensive either.Sigma pulled off a well-balanced lineup here, and they are beautiful to behold and to hold. The 90mm f2.8 is highly recommended.
Whenever you can get a sharp, well built lens with good ergonomic controls at a reasonable cost, you have to be well satisfied. Highly recommended. Sigma lenses are winners.
This lens is sharp starting wide open and going through the aperture range. I use it on a Sony A7R II. It also reproduces colors very accurately. Autofocus is quiet and quick. The build quality is exemplary, having an all-metal barrel and hood. It is also compact and lightweight.
I bought this to replace my old Sony 85mm f/1.8, and though it's not as fast as the Sony, it's sharper, lighter, and smaller. Time will tell if I'll miss the custom button on the 85mm, but the aperture ring is a nice bonus, and the metal hood is more durable than the plastic one on my old Sony. I'm very pleased!
Bought this lens to compliment the Leica 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. Pleasantly surprised by both build quality and image quality. Lens is also compact for a 90mm. Great value.
I wanted a well-balanced lighter weight portrait lens for my Sony A7R III. This lens is about as light as they come and not at all bulky. Autofocus is excellent. Auto- and manual f stops work as they should. Close up depth of field for portrait work is good enough, if one chooses background well. Here's my dog in a jpeg cropped on the left to 5x7, sharpened in LR Classic. Other test shots today from f2.8-22 are sharp where they should be. So much better for my neck, handling and sharpness than my Canon f4 28-105 L.
