simplehuman 40L Slim Step Trash Can Black

The Slim Step from the simplehuman brand is a bin that is easy to move thanks to the wheels that have been incorporated. The pedal bin is made from plastic and is therefore very light and easy to move. You can store as much as 40 Lof waste in this narrow bin. The sliding mechanism ensures that your pets cannot open the lid, so you won't come home to a mess in the kitchen. The lid of this bin is dampened, so it closes more slowly and quietly. Thanks to the wheels, the sliding mechanism, and the cushioned lid, this is a very user-friendly bin that you will enjoy using.

I have purchased this same trash can multiple times over the last 20 years because it fits perfectly in my kitchen. Normally they last several years before the lid begins to pop off when opened with the foot pedal. The lid does not stay on at all with this new can. I returned one and purchased another because it was so bad. I experienced the same problem with the replacement can. I ended up drilling holes in the lid and used zip ties to keep the lid from coming off.

Fantastic product. Bought to sit alongside an identical one which I have labelled for use for my elderly Mum’s carers. Space saving and very practical. The K bin liners are excellent as they are robust and keep nasty smells contained when the bag is placed in the outside wheelie bin. This is the 5th 40L slim pedal bin that I have purchased for my family and myself.

This bin is let down badly by its amateurish design. It has two utterly stupid 4 inch wheels at the back, this is a 40 litre kitchen bin, it does not require wheels, they are utterly redundant. There is also a severe issue with the weight of the bin when it's empty. The pedal for opening the bin needs so much force to open that the empty bin actually tips towards you. I actually suspect that the wheels were added to combat this....maybe if the wheels were made of lead this would've worked. Anyway, the bin looks nice, but it is just so aggravatingly light it's maddening. I'm going to put some cement in the bottom of it. For the money paid I'm very dissapointed with it.

Does exactly what you'd expect
6 May 2024

We bought this because we needed a kitchen garbage can skinny enough to fit between our range and the wall. This fit the bill! We've only had it for a few days, but it seems to function well, looks like ... well, a garbage can ... and takes regular kitchen garbage can liners. The lid closing device has a damper on it, so it closes gently, which is nice but not necessary. Seems like a decent product.

Great Slimline (lockable) Bin...
3 September 2024

Originally bought to replace a small bathroom bin by side of toilet but it wasn't as Slimline as I'd thought. lol Nevertheless, got it at a "bargain price" so I wasn't about to return it and it now resides in my kitchen. It has a very smart look about it and black bin bags can be knotted at the side to help keep everything nice and clean. The fact that it locks🔒 simply means peace of mind when leaving the house especially when you have pets at home. Great choice..great buy!

Great size

Love our bins, bought one black for general, one grey for recycling. Normal bin liner fits perfectly round the rim snugly. So much better than our previous duo bin which had 2 tall thin bins and would fill up very quickly despite there being loads of room in the actual bag. These bins have a very wide opening so fits loads in before full - less wasted bin bags and less taking the rubbish out!

It locks, but its a bit annoying
27 December 2022

The good thing is that it locks, so it will keep foraging pets out, but it has some annoying design features. Most importantly, the lid of the bin I have does not actually close by itself - if the bin is not locked, then the lid floats about an inch above being closed, which means if you don't use the lock your kitchen is going to get smelly pretty quickly. Second, it has wheels at the back - but there is no handle on the front of the bin to use to manouver it, so the wheels just seem superfluous and annoying. I don't understand why it needs wheels in the first place? Be warned the lock is also quite stiff, which is good for keeping animals out, but is quite awkward to open and close. Its also a bit of an awkward shape, in terms of fitting in to a kitchen. However, ... MoreThe good thing is that it locks, so it will keep foraging pets out, but it has some annoying design features. My Angel @ Home Store
16 July 2024

I had the most outstanding customer service experience ever in your North Hills Location in Pittsburgh. I walked every aisle & could not find the indoor garbage can ailse. I ran in to an associate up on a tall ladder in carpets. Not only did he stop what he was doing, but he immediately smiled at me & assisted me in where to find my product. So off I went, and he was 100% accurate, but I couldn't find prices on any of the cans. So off I went to the front counter & ran into my angel -again. And once again, he stopped what he was doing & assisted me again. I do not remember his name, but he was a vary handsome young black male-that is my ANGEL.

Very disappoint design

We purchased this as it is lockable so although it solved the problem of cat bin diving we just have a new set issues. The lock mechanism is very stiff and as such I have caused damage to my hands and have to stand behind the bin to lock/unlock it.It is very light so knock over easily, 2 house bricks solved that but with determination by a certain cat it has still been found keeled over on it's side. I see a review after I ordered this bin appeared mentioning it's too light for the force needed to open it.Biggest issue is that the bin liners are not concealed so those expensive made to measure liners get ripped to shreds and even when new just look unsightly.Considering the cost and the hassle we had getting the 2 bins we ordered both being delivered I wish I had ... MoreWe purchased this as it is lockable so although it solved the problem of cat bin diving we just have a new set issues. The lock mechanism is very stiff and as such I have caused damage to my hands and have to stand behind the bin to lock/unlock it.It is very light so knock over easily, 2 house bricks solved that but with determination by a certain cat it has still been found keeled over on it's side. Well Made Trashcan
14 April 2024

This is my second; the first one lasted 11 years! I love the silent function, the durability. The only thing that bothers me at all is that every time the pedal is pushed, the trashcan moves backwards ever so slightly; so I have to pull it forward back into position after every few uses so it's not against the wall. If you could come up with some sort of "stopper" that could prevent this, it would be a 5 for sure!
