I bought this particular Singer about a month ago. I should have read other reviews closely, but this was the only available sewing machine on singer.com so I went ahead and ordered. I feel like with this Singer model and little practice I could do some pretty cool things that you would end up paying a lot for on Etsy or a local craftsperson.Here are some more details about the Singer 7640 Confidence 200-stitch Sewing Machine. First, as a guy who is into craft projects such as 3d printing, vinyl cutting (see my Cricuit reviews), this felt like a really high tech piece of equipment. The unit was both light and easy to pick up, but solid and stable while working on an average table. When learning about the features of this sewing machine, I learned that can do some pretty advanced and intricate stitches automatically, just by keying in a number from a card. There were something like 200 different stitches built in - more or less you select the stitch, line up your materials, push down on the pedal and it does all of the complicated work - it goes backwards, forwards, and side to side automatically. I made this really intricate leaf pattern with 0 skill or experience within 5 minutes. While you may be a purist who wants to do every detail by hand, I can see this saving a lot of time while you focus on the overall design and flow leaving the stitching to the machine's brain - e.g., I imagine I could use this leaf stitch and then hand manipulate my material to write a name in a fancy cursive font - that would be super impressive, right? The other thing that really impressed me was the ability to program in text embroidery. I was able to program in my name using a number-to-letter lookup chart and program in the sequence of letters. Then the Singer did all the work of actually sewing in my name for me and made it easy to stop on a dime. If you are someone who likes to sew names into your dress shirt at the bottom for dry cleaning or even monogram your sleeve, this does all the work and you will easily save money over having the dry cleaner or a seamstress do this for you.I think this is a really good beginner model and has a lot of features for about $200. This can probably take you from beginner to semi-pro and keep giving you what you need.I am writing this review as part of a contest.
Having been used to a 30 year old Kenmore, repeated jams and broken needles, I found sewing a dreaded chore. My new Confidence 7640 is a pleasure to sew with. It automatically adapts to different thicknesses and has many computerized stitches that were not available to me on my old machine. The accessories make sewing buttonholes and zippers much easier. I have only used it a couple times since receiving it a few weeks ago and look forward to sewing more in the future. There are several videos on You-Tube that help walk you through the basics. The only inconvenience I found is the machine does not come with a manual - you need to go to the website to download or print a PDF.

PROS: The machine is genuinely made up of good quality metal chassis and parts inside while plastic sturdy body ouside so light to carry but sturdy for use. Stitching is easy tried lot of patterns and it's an easy task even for a new person. The stitch patterns are crisp and clean. Happy with the looks. The extension table is also very useful. As per my first experience till now its excellent and all thumbs up. Shall share my long term reviews after enjoying stitching for a while.CONS: Honestly not yet but need some practice with auto threading being the new tech for me but it's all upto user skills and practice . I couldn't be happier with my 1st sowing machine. Despite being a total novice, it was very easy to understand its controls.The speed control promotes accuracy. The endless variety of beautiful stitches inspires me to never get bored and an automatic 1-button hole system makes me feel brave to undertake more advanced projects. Having test-drives a few basic singer machines, I'm very happy to have invested a bit more. Very good quality.
