SmallRig 1798 Overview The SmallRig Tripod Mounting Kit with 2 x Plates and 2 x 15mm Rod Clamps is designed with two mounting plates, enabling you to offset the weight of a front-heavy camera rig so the rig remains balanced on your tripod. Two 15mm LWS rod clamps can be used separately or together on the baseplate to support camera accessories. The baseplates feature non-slip top surfaces, multiple 1/4′′-20 and 3/8′′-16 camera mounts, and thumb-lever locks. A center slot provides 1.6′′ of front-to-back adjustment for optimally positioning your camera on the baseplate.

Normally, I adore smallrig stuff. This base plate isn't in my top items from them. SImple because of the way the mounting screw is set up. It isn't the easiest o get on and off. I have this as a backup baseplate and use other mounts as the main base plate. If you leave it on your camera permanently, it's no big deal. If you swap bodies a lot, it isn't the greatest option. It does secure the 15mm rods though with no give and is made of thick aluminum.

I bought this a while ago, along with an extra rod clamp and rods and lens support. Typical extremely high Smallrig quality. I put it all together as a long lens support. Sigma doesn't have a lens collar for the 100-400 zoom, and I wanted a two-point support anyway so I assembled this rig. See my photo. I use it with a Manfrotto video head and the package works great (probably not as good as a gimbal, but way cheaper) for my wildlife work with my 100-400 zoom.

The plates and clamps are basically separate pieces that can be built out into all kinds of configurations. In the base configuration, it's one heavy set of clamps that does the trick. I might have preferred lighter, but the ability to replace the top with a quick release makes up for the weight.

The rod holes werent aligned properly for some reason and it caused my rods to be scratched whenever I insert it. The holes are extra tight too for some reason.
I had great expectations for this unit since I'm a big fan of all smallrig products, and most of my rig is made out of smallrig parts. however, this base mounting kit is been disappointing. The unit itself looks and feels great, but is it almost useless for me. First, It came with tout any form of instructions on how to assemble it. Second, it is impossible to mount it in the release plate of my tripod. I have a professional Neewer tripod and as the pictures show, there is no way to fix the plate to this mounting kit. I tried everything, took it apart twice and tried both plates, nothing works. If this only works with smallrig tripod plates, it should be explained in the product specifications. I have mounted many rigs on my tripod, but this is the only one that does no work in any way or form. Third, you cant attach this to your camera and expect to take it off easily to put your camera on a gimbal or other device quickly. No way. you have to take apart the whole thing to release your camera, and that takes at least 15 minutes. If you put your camera here, you better use it like this the whole shooting day. It is just a very un-practical rig. Nor for professional use, for sure. Take a look at my pictures and let me know if this looks like a well made product for professional use. A fifth issue I had is that that base is too low on the rig and now my camera and the mate box dont align. Very disappointed with this product. Please include instructions in the box next time in your products.
Just a heads up. This is not compatible with the BMPCC4K. I ordered it under that presupposition. The mounting screws are nearly impossible to access, but the build quality is decent. It may be more practical for a different setup, however.
SmallRig has a habit of making sturdy and versatile parts for camera rigs. This rail block makes for the foundation of a solid and compact camera rig.Mounts easily under the camera, with or without a cage, and just as easily to a tripod QR plate. Just add 15mm rods and it’s good to go.
It's very small as I wanted it to be .mounting is versatile and has infinite possibilities for future attachments . Well worth the item it's as describe
This is a pretty basic baseplate that's working well for me with the BMPCC4K - you just have to unscrew the bottom plate and then attach that and the rail clamps to the camera, then reassemble the whole thing. A little fiddly and not as convenient as some of their other baseplates with Arca quick releases, but affordable and usable!
i got this for my BMPCC 6K and Zhiyun Crane 3S combo so i could still have a matte box when not on my shoulder mount. lightweight, sturdy and works great. i added a quick-release plate set on top to match all my other stuff. rides the Crane 3S great without adding too much weight or height. it did raise the camera enough that the Crane focus gear wouldn't reach, but i got creative with the extra rods and clamps in the follow focus / zoom control set (since i don't use the zoom control) and made it work great.
