An awesomely comfortable baselayer

I love to hike, and I hate having to bundle up with a heavy jacket. Give me a good hoody and something underneath to cut the chill, and I’m a happy climber. This top fits the bill, soft, roomy, comfortable, and it breathes while keeping me warm. I’ve been on 6 hikes with it so far and have washed it in delicate setting twice, with an air dry. It dries quickly, and so far has kept its shape and elasticity. This is quickly becoming my favorite undergarment. It fits easily under my hoodie, and I’m good-to-go in most conditions above 32°.

Defiantly would recommend

Use this product as a base layer for skiing. Perfect combo with an insulated ski jacket, to keep you warm up to -10 celsius. Might need a mid layer past those temperatures, but personally couldn't test it myself. For comparison before investing in smart wool I used a simple thermo shirt from marks work-warehouse. Not only does this shirt not stink after ripping the slopes for a week straight. But as I sweat (heavy sweater) it still will continue to keep you warm all day on the slopes. Defiantly glad I bought into the hype and even though it is expensive it is well worth the purchase. Glad I bought into the hype and would recommend to anyone who's been on the fence of this expensive base layer. The fit is snug and really does hug the body. I usually wear an XL shirt however I had to size down to an L in this shirt as the sleeves in the XL were way too long. Lastly crew is also a great choice to wear over the 1/4 zip thermal base layer from smartwool as an alternative to a mid layer.

Good base layer but not durable

Bought 2 of the 250 crews to use as a baselayer for snowboarding. The layers are comfortable and good at temperature regulating but one of the garments got multiple holes on the back, near my shoulder blade after only a few wears despite being worn under a fairly thick jacket.I have many other pieces of merino wool clothing and have never had them tear even after years of continuous use. In this case the garment just does not seem very durable. I contacted smartwool who told me this is not covered under their warranty so purchase at your own risk. It is hard to justify spending $100 on a shirt which only lasts a handful of uses.

I live in this shirt
13 May 2023

I have this shirt in multiple colors and wear it over a Prana cotton T-shirt in the Fall, Winter and Spring. They did change the fit slightly--it looks better in the shoulders but the arms are slightly shorter. I wash mine in warm water and then hang dry (I pull a little on the arms to get the length back which has worked fine for me over the last 5+ years.PLEASE BRING BACK THE NAVY COLOR! I need to replace the one I currently have--it developed holes in the elbows (which is the only place this shirt seems to break down for me). I can appreciate new colors and that you still offer black and gray, it would be nice if navy blue was part of the conservative staple and it would still give those who are not so bold consistent color options. Also, PLEASE BRING BACK THE ... MoreI have this shirt in multiple colors and wear it over a Prana cotton T-shirt in the Fall, Winter and Spring. I will layer this over the Thermal Long-Sleeve. The second generation Hudson is made from a different material that (I believe is more eco-friendly) is warmer but not as comfortable. It would be a unfortunate to decide to discontinue such a great sweater because the new material was not well received.I only wear Smartwool socks, even the everyday dress socks for the office.Wool is an amazing natural material: insulates when wet, order-free after days of backpacking, and helps regulate temperature across a broad range of temperatures.I'm always searching to dial in my gear, clothes, etc. and this product is one I have not upgraded, hence, the shirt I wore today with holes in the elbows. It attracts comments from my friends but I don't care. Please bring back the navy blue color!

Men’s Smartwool 250 Baselayer Top
22 January 2023

Such a high quality product that my husband wears his as a stand alone polo shirt as well as an under layer ( as do I because there is no see through). I was initially worried that the wool might be itchy, but that’s not the case. It’s very soft against the skin. I haven’t been brave enough to put it in the dryer on low as the washing directions suggest, so I use a laundry bag with warm water on delicate, then lay the shirt flat on a rack to dry. Perfect every time. This shirt would be ideal for anyone who feels the cold in winter and wants an extra layer under wool & cashmere sweaters or any shirts because the boxed fit is not too tight or loose - it simply curves with the body. Couldn’t be more pleased!

The Ultimate Base Layer for everyday or long travel
17 May 2023

I was looking for a base layer which wasn't synthetic and found this smartwool which as an almost perfect review on outdoor gear lab website. After a quick research, altitudes sport had it in stock, so I decided to give a try on it. I find it, super confortable and it's my best base layer option for longer travel (weither it's for colder weather canoe camping or bikepacking trips) or everyday life. It's so confortable you will want to sleep in it even if you you had it on all day. I am about 225lbs, 6'1'' with muscular body type and broad shoulder, I wear size large t-shirt and this smartwool shirt fits me perfect with a large, no compression while still being slim fit. I love this 250. Like many reviews are saying, the Smartwool 250 is noticeably thicker and heavier than the 150 baselayers. The 250 is more like a light or thin wool sweater than a long sleeve t-shirt. Perfect for passive and active wear in colder weather. It keeps you warm if you are stationnary after sweeting. Love it!

Unacceptable Durability/Longevity for the Price
6 February 2022

When doing my research on this product, I saw a regular thread of one criticism arise for Smartwool products: the Merino 250 and 150 baselayers, in general, are not very durable. However, I thought that maybe those people with those complaints used their products more vigorously or for more demanding activities than I intended. My intended use for these products was simply for every day, around town, office, and home activities when outside temperatures dropped below 30 degrees (i.e. not camping, hiking, cycling, mountain climbing, etc.). I decided to give the 250 baselayers a chance and try out for myself. I bought a top and a bottom in preparation for the winter, but before committing to buying more Smartwool products, I wanted to test the durability for myself. ... MoreWhen doing my research on this product, I saw a regular thread of one criticism arise for Smartwool products: the Merino 250 and 150 baselayers, in general, are not very durable. Well, I used these products for my intended use-case, and here are a few of my experiences:1) I can confirm that these are not very durable. I owned them for 12 weeks in total. I used them for about 25 days in total, and I washed them 5 times in a machine wash gentle, as well as 1 time by hand. The first time I hung these to dry, they needed 5+ hours to dry. So, afterwards, I would throw these in the drier on low for about 10 minutes, and then I would hang them to dry. This sped up the amount of time to hang dry by several hours. I noticed after my last wash, that the shirt had 3 small holes appear on the right torso side of my shirt. I would say I averaged about 4 days of wearing these between washes.2) I found that I could wear these products multiple times before washing them because the odor resistance is excellent. I usually wore these 4 times before washing them, and I wore underwear under them to extend their use between washes. I would wear them for about 12-16 hours during the day, then I would change my clothes at night for bed, allowing these to hang dry. Wool certainly has an advantage over synthetics on odor resistance.3) While I normally wore these in temperatures from 10s to 30s, sometimes I would be indoors at 60-70 degrees. While I definitely felt warm and started sweating a little at room temperatures, I did feel that these products breathed and dried well. I never felt these products get soaked like cotton nor unpleasantly damp like polyester while wearing them.4) When soaked (like just after washing), these products need 5+ hours to hang dry. I would say these are not the best for highly humid, wet environments.I had high hopes for my Smartwool 250 Merino base layers, especially since these are highly rated. I must say that if I spend $100 on a baselayer top and $100 on a baselayer bottom, I expect to get more than 25 uses and 12 weeks worth of wear out of them, so I am highly disappointed about the cost to durability/longevity ratio.I guess the search for the best baselayers continues..Cons: -3 stars- This baselayer is not durable at all. I had 3 small holes form after only 5 machine washes and 1 hand wash. (-2 stars for the lack of durability)- This product is expensive, and not worth the price given the fragility of the product. (-1 star for the cost)Pros: +2 stars- This baselayer resists odors extremely well.- This baselayer is extremely soft.- This baselayer does provide adequate warmth and is more breathable than synthetic counterparts.

Warm, cozy long-sleeve

My second purchased in a month, because I love the first (olive green) so much, I had to grab another colour (burgundy) while they're still available. It's a long-sleeve T with benefits. The warmth is perfect for fall and PNW winters, either layered under another shirt or as a top layer over a t. As with any other Merino, these ones regulate your heat and breathe well. Can't possibly own enough of them!Time will tell about pilling of the fabric, but I plan to wash them only as needed (ie not every time I wear them) and hang them to dry. I'm sure they'll hold up to the dryer, but I don't like spending this much on a shirt so I want to baby mine!FIt is great -- I'm a little overweight, but can see this working as a decent shirt on its own because it's not too ... MoreMy second purchased in a month, because I love the first (olive green) so much, I had to grab another colour (burgundy) while they're still available. It's a long-sleeve T with benefits. I bought a large, and find the length and arm length perfect. I have oddly long arms for my height and there's no issue with these sleeves!
