Mountaineer Tall Fully Padded Socks from Smartwool are their thickest and warmest socks in the range, which keep your feet warm and comfortable on all your trips, regardless of length. These socks are developed with Smartwool's instructawool technology, which means that it is a very durable sock that does not compromise on comfort or fit.

This sock is a badly failed attempt to update the Phd Outdoor Heavy socks that they replace. These socks are thinner and less warm. In addition, these socks have a looser knit that is less durable and that, combined with thinness, contribute to less warmth. Smartwool also substantially changed the sizing so that a Medium is now more like a large, a large is now more like an extra-large, and so on. These socks have thin bands at the top of the socks. Rather than helping the socks stay in place, the thin bands are poorly placed and make the socks fall down toward the ankles. Despite the "Tall Crew" in the name, these socks are not tall crew. Even the description states Crew and not Tall Crew as in the sock name. I pointed this mistake out to Smartwool over a month ago ... MoreThis sock is a badly failed attempt to update the Phd Outdoor Heavy socks that they replace. These socks are thinner and less warm. After purchasing and wearing only Smartwool socks for over fifteen years, this sock led me for the first time to ask Smartwool for a refund. Smartwool gave me a generic response about store credit that did not answer my specific questions and problems. I asked them to answer my specific questions and I have not heard from them in 96 hours. Sadly, the failure of this sock and Smartwool's unwillingness to refund one order to a loyal, fifteen year customer, is going to make me (and family members) go elsewhere for future socks.

I always liked Smartwool products. This pair arrived with a big hole. Looks like not much of quality control. This hole was big.I looked into the return policy and seems to be a big ordeal.

Haven't done a long term durability test on these but they feel and fit great. Classic smartwool burled inside cozy feeling and plenty thick. I like the brown color. They didn't come in size small which was the recommended size :/ but the medium fits fine. Usually I'm a small in men's darn tough, medium in women's darn tough, and XL in smartwool kids for comparison. I appreciate that they haven't lost any wool fuzzies; hoping that means they'll last forever like the description implies. Usually I'm a Darn Tough person but for the thickness and burled wool inside feel I could see myself wearing these in winter. The main issue with my earlier Smartwool socks was that they would lose their wool; so far so good#sweepstakes

Loving these. Appreciate max cushion, bought 4 pairs in different configurations. Really important if you've ever experienced plantar fasciitis, like me. I do extensive urban walking, light hiking, and some running with these. Over the past 10 years all of my socks for all occasions are now merino! Something to consider with the extra cushioning: make sure your shoes are roomy enough! Oh, and the color/patterns are cool!
The smarwool sock range are made well, and launder well. I have several pairs for myself and recently gifted pairs to family members in their Christmas stockings. We're outdoors wearing boots most of the winter and these socks are comfortable and keep our feet warm.
I love smartwool socks and purchased these for my husband. He really likes the cushion but also the taller crew height. I imagine this would be key with taller hiking boots but he even feels it’s great for around the house! Quality product as always
I bought these specifically because my husband was looking for warmer socks for winter. The description says these are the warmest model that smart wool makes- but we can't tell any different in thickness compared to the standard smart wool that my husband wears in the fall. We haven't tested them out in the cold yet - so can't say for sure.
These “foot” the bill no matter what! Perfect thickness, always stay put and keep my toes warm and comfy. Have worn them hiking and while sitting at cold lacrosse games. Great for both.
I purchased these for my husband. We will be hiking in Iceland in late October. He was concerned his feet would be cold and asked me to purchase socks that will keep his feet warm. I have several pair of Smartwool socks and love how the wear and are cushioned for long days of wear. The obvious choice was to purchase Smartwool for the days we are hiking glaciers or whale watching. The socks will be perfect for hiking the mountains and trails of Tennessee where we live. Great product.
I like this socks very much. I have been buying it 5 years with different cushion. Low and middle I wear with boots and Mountaineer Max I wear at home. Cause my home is very cold. Size is fitting nice/ I have 44 and I have bought 42- 45. And one more they are controlling temperature of feet great.
