I haven't used this yet since the mountains haven't opened, but it was very comfy and soft when I tried on in store. Also, it IS audio compatible, just a little hard to figure out. You have to take that chin strap out of the elastic band on the outside of the ear flap then pop the ear flap out of the helmet. The ear flap is attached to a piece of plastic that pops in and out. Then you open the velcro flap at the base of the ear flap to pop your speaker inside. it doesn't look like regular velcro, but it is the same type as the chin strap- a rough teethy texture that pulls regular fiber cloth. Then you do the same with the other ear flap and that middle flap in the back of the helmet. One downside is I don't like the dial to tighten. It is a little harder to turn ... MoreI haven't used this yet since the mountains haven't opened, but it was very comfy and soft when I tried on in store. It is a little harder to turn than the kind on most other helmets. You have to grip the whole tiny knob and turn, you can't just flick across the bottom. Giving 4 stars bc I have not actually used it to go snowboarding.

Not the worst helmet, but for the price (even though it's on the low end for Smith helmets) I was pretty disappointed. Overall it's pretty good, but where it falls way short of slightly more expensive options is in the earpads/overall ear area. Mine was suuuuper uncomfortable and painful on my left ear no matter how I adjusted it, and I ended up having to disconnect the ear pads and rip out the foam insert that is glued inside the earpads so I could avoid getting a migraine from wearing this thing.Part 2 of why the ear design sucks is the compatibility with audio inserts (in my case Outdoor Tech wireless chips, i.e. pretty dang common audio inserts). The helmet is said to be compatible with Outdoor Tech audio chips (on REI product description as well as the one on Smith's website) and it technically is I guess...but it is NOT easy to insert the chips, and the way the adjustor connected to the BOA at the back of the helmet is designed, you also run the risk of that piece just totally breaking if you try to insert the chips...even inserting them the "correct" way. Spoiler alert, my helmet broke doing just this. Seems like a design failure on Smith's part for sure. I couldn't easily find directions from Smith on how to insert the chips, and had to do some deep digging to finally figure out the process, which is really not intuitive at all. That point was particularly irritating seeing as on some of their other helmets, it's super easy to insert audio, so really don't understand the disconnect with this model. All in all, if you want a safe helmet (this has MIPS so yay) that's pretty basic, this isn't the worst. Might be uncomfortable or painful, and not easy to take out the extra foam padding, but honestly it'll do the job. But really if you want something that's good for using audio inserts, spring for the Smith Vantage that has zippered ear flaps or something similar...it's significantly easier if you're using an audio system, and also the helmet probably won't break when you try to use it for one of its advertised features. Mine broke just outside REI's year return policy and Smith won't cover this issue, so I'm really wishing I paid $100 more to get a comfortable helmet that actually works as advertised...

Love this helmet/color. Feels very light weight but supportive. Keeps your head warm but gives the options to vent if needed. Clip is easy to use. Comfortable helmet to wear overall. It will scuff easily. So if traveling with it, use the bag it came with or pack in a suitcase.

This helmet is a great value! It does not sacrifice functionality or safety, though it doesn’t feel as luxurious upon closer inspection as more expensive Smith products. This is as expected, and Smith has done a great job with it.I picked up a rose colored helmet after rocking the Smith Variance for a few years. This helmet has all the features of my last one — albeit the audio insert openings are a bit hidden in the design, but are present and fully functional (I was able to insert my Alecks once I figured out how to open up the ear pads).Close to the top of the inner ear pads and along the inner back of the helmet there is a velcro seem that takes a bit of patience to open up the first time. Once you open it once, it’s much easier afterwards. Hope this helps ... MoreThis helmet is a great value! Fit great, got a wonderful deal on this helmet. Nearly 50% off, evo has incredible deals! I am very tiny with a small head (55 cm exact, round) and it's pretty snug with room to tighten it. I like to wear beanies with my helmet and it gets a bit tight even on the loosest setting, so something to keep in mind. I love the adjustable vents, and the ventilation for the goggles is great. I have the Smith goggles and they never fog with the helmet, I love it! I really wanted the MILStechnology, it saved my head from some really scary falls.
Overall, I enjoyed the helmet but there are definitely some things that need improvement. However, given the price point, it's worth and I would recommend.Pros:=Boa tightening system makes putting the helmet on and off super easy=The ability to change the vents to open or close is great for different weather boarding. I mostly snowboard in Cali where it's pretty hot but do occasionally go boarding in much colder areas so I loved this feature.=I really enjoy the overall shape of the helmet. It has a slight overhang that gives no gap between the helmet and goggles so I don't have to worry about putting on sunblock (although I do anyway).Cons:=The helmet says it's audio compatible but as most other reviews have stated the hole in the middle part of the ear ... MoreOverall, I enjoyed the helmet but there are definitely some things that need improvement. At the same time, the ear flaps were so tight for me that putting in earphones started to make my ears hurt. Really annoying and frustrating but you get over it if you're not too picky, I guess.=I hate the ear flaps but that's any helmet. Not sure if they're removable--haven't had the chance to check.
Fits my small little head perfectly and it's really soft and fuzzy on the inside. The MIPS is great as I wear my goggles both under and over my helmet, depending on how I feel. Other helmets felt like the back top of my head wasn't really secured on in the helmet, so this was such a great find for my head.ALSO - pros that the helmet has built in ear covers that are fuzzy and soft, perfect so I don't have to wear my ear warmers. I have been skiing many times is multiple resorts. I am an intermediate skier. I prefer the fun greens/ blues. I can ski black diamonds, but honestly I prefer the ease of skiing rather than the competitiveness. I was skiing an easy run. The run was narrower surrounded with beautiful trees and cabins. I noticed a skied off area where there was a ton of noticeable ice. I attempted to move to the right to avoid most of the icy snow. I did hit a patch, which increased my speed. It was Ll fine but right after the ice patch was a mogul, followed by another larger mogul. After having the speed from the ice hitting that first unexpected mogul sent me in a non-controlled tumble. After hitting the second mogul, I was airborne. My head broke my fall. I remember my head hitting ... MoreI have been skiing many times is multiple resorts. I am an intermediate skier. I remember my head hitting and bouncing back. My husband was right behind me, so I loved right away. I was okay and able to ski home. I made skied away without a concussion, or even worse. I did get whiplash, but no lasting effects. I am a walking advertisement for this life saving helmet. I literally own my life to Smith ski helmets. I am BEYOND grateful for your technology, and safety features. I cannot thank you enough. If you’re reading this thinking of purchasing a helmet. Do not think twice. It may safe your life too.
I've been a skier for most of my life and have had just a handful of helmets. A couple years ago I also took up cycling as a mode of urban transportation, so I needed a helmet that would protect me if I catch an edge or a driver doesn't see me. Function > fashion... but a lovely, matte, icy aqua color and relatively small profile don't hurt. The MIPS feature is a must-have, just in case.It being April '20, I've only used this as a bike helmet on chilly days. After making patient strap adjustments (DO NOT FORGET THIS), it fits my head & jaw very comfortably and does not wiggle around! This is purely a cold weather helmet -- the ear muffs (nicely insulated with a soft, almost fur-like material on the internal sides) aren't intended for removal, but the inside cap ... MoreI've been a skier for most of my life and have had just a handful of helmets. Very easy to adjust top vents to closed/vented/open and don goggles without taking the helmet off as well.
i have been snowboarding for a few years now and didnt really look into helmets but i always wore one. i fell hard one day and had a concussion and neck back lash. missed a day of snowboarding because of it. thats when i really started to look into helmets. i had my eye on this one and it went on sale! so i got it and wore it on my last snowboarding trip of the season and loved the fit and felt great! happy to feel more safe snowboarding
