"Snow Crash" is a fast-paced futuristic novel that intertwines everything from Sumerian myth to visions of a postmodern civilization on the brink of collapse. Stephenson's science fiction writing is bizarre- yet he ties his fantastic creation to the real world just enough to seem plausible. Although "Snow Crash" heavily leans on Sumerian culture and ideas, the imaginative juxtaposition of ancient and futuristic detail makes this book a fascinating read.

This book put so many concepts into one place and created a genre of its own. True future fiction that is mostly becoming fact.

This classic story has coined or popularised many terms used in the virtual world of the internet today, which is why I decided to give it a read.Snow Crash is set in a distopian not-too-distant future, with many factions of not so black and white agendas and motives.Without too many spoilers, there is a race against time where the hero protagonist, ironically named named Hiro Protagonist, must prevent the mass release of a virus which can infect a person through the internet.I enjoyed the variety and development of characters, as well as the plot itself, Though I felt the inclusion of religious figures and events were not needed and confused the story in parts.Overall, definately a good read for fans of science fiction.
Great speculative science fiction, and a fairly large but not overwhelmingly huge cast of interesting characters. Futuristic and gritty, and still mind-blowing, all at the same time. Cool motorcycles, sword fights, super-skateboards, stylized cyberspace, evil guys, with a healthy dose of Mesopotamian legend/pseudo-history thrown in. This was my first Stephenson novel, and have been re-reading it over the years and recommend it to friends when I can (then try to buy a new book when my friends are slow in giving it back!)
Despite being a parody of the genre, it is an absolute blast if a book. Fun, engaging, and somewhat intellectually stimulating. I loved it.
...Stephenson's world-building is fantastic and I had to keep reminding myself that this was published back in the early '90s because it feels like it could have been written more recently. I'm not sure if Snow Crash is the result of pure genius or a lot of research or both (probably both) but the world Stephenson creates for this book includes enough realistic elements that it feels like a very plausible future and I found it very interesting to get into...Even when there are breaks from the action I still wouldn't exactly call it a lull. It took me a long time to actually finish this book because school kind of took over my life for a while this past semester but even after a month or two I was able to pick this up and remembered everything that had been going on ... More...Stephenson's world-building is fantastic and I had to keep reminding myself that this was published back in the early '90s because it feels like it could have been written more recently. It took me a long time to actually finish this book because school kind of took over my life for a while this past semester but even after a month or two I was able to pick this up and remembered everything that had been going on without having to flip back and refresh my memory. Some books you know you would have to do that but I was too into this one to forget any of the details and I think that is very telling of the ability Stephenson has to create a world and a story and characters that a reader can become truly invested in.For full review please visit me at Here Be Bookwyrms on Blogger:http://herebebookwyrms.blogspot.com/2012/12/snow-crash.html
My boyfriend read this book to me, and it is now my favourite book. As a software developer, I found it highly engaging, despite its age. The pace was fantastic - being written in present tense adds a sense of urgency to the whole thing. The intelligent discussion regarding ancient languages even inspired me to go to my university library and borrow the same reference texts he talked about, which I am now reading. Overall, this book was an amazing experience for me.
This book reads like a teenagers dream. I can tell the author thought these ideas were clever when they wrote them as even simple thought bubbles get extensive air time in this thoroughly unengaging read. I rarely donate away books before I finish but there was no way I could mentally cope with finishing this book. Do something better with your time. For a similar but much better written book I recommend "neuromancer".
An utterly bizarre mishmash of satirical cyberpunk action and musings on linguistics and theology. Well written, thought provoking and funny. The balancing act between humor, action and introspection is admirable and took a great writer to pull off
