Decent for my keyboard submix but the Eq and compressor section are nothing to write home about. 66db of gain (exact same output as the Neve Portico) is a little nicer than most, but not enough for ribbons, however that’s not what these are intended for anyway. I had never heard of the six series so bought them without knowing they were derived from a live sound mixer. Like a Midas on… a couple cups of coffee. I guess that’s why they’re a bit less than the other models. For $400, (that’s right VK selling these for 500…??), where else you gonna get a pre, eq and compressor? With SSL QC behind it? Nowhere. My guess is that this is the SSL’s attempt at “consumer end” products such as Heritages “Elite” series, Rupert Neve designed stuff (yuk) or the new API budget ... MoreDecent for my keyboard submix but the Eq and compressor section are nothing to write home about. 66db of gain (exact same output as the Neve Portico) is a little nicer than most, but not enough for ribbons, however that’s not what these are intended for anyway. I found that the compressor LED’s here are useless and dont even register at low ratios (it’s like three bulbs so…. Yea) but other than that it works well for light application like keyboard submixer duties and live sound stuff (although, why would you ever use 500 series in a rehearsal space?). Main vocal pre? Well, let’s not be silly :) Eq, comp and pre from SSL for 400 bucks, pretty smokin deal! Just dont expect it to sound like electric lady’s G+

my first toe in the 500 series water and i don't think there could've been a better choice to get aquatinted. the preamp is crisp and clean. my reference points in my rig are a gap pre73, a joemeek q3 and an art mpa ll with upgraded tubes. the ssl preamp section is hi-fi sounding in comparison to these others but warms up when pushed. the 2 band eq is effective and musical, and the simple one knob compressor does exactly what it's supposed to. and the kicker is the price point. i've already saved almost enough lunch money to buy a second one…
