While the bass may be a bit loose, it has enough control for impact without overriding any other frequencies or distort at high volume. The mids are a bit suppressed, but still present enough to allow for crisp vocals, rhythm instruments, choruses, etc. The treble is well defined, adding clarity, and makes high frequency vocals, rifts, lead guitars, violin, and piano sound great. The speaker can get very loud and fills a mid-size room well. While the unit features a dual-speaker stereo configuration, I found it a bit difficult to discern the left-right channel separation, even when listening closely and in front of it. This affects the sense of where the sounds are coming from (imaging), and the soundstage seems a bit restricted. In reality, this is not a big deal unless you are listening critically, and that is not what this device is intended for.I tried it with movies, and it was definitely an upgrade from the TV’s speakers. But again, the channel separation needs to be more accurate. Having only one speaker, I can’t help but to wish for a second one for that true stereo experience.The ERA 100 is fully compatible with the Alexa voice assistant. It recognized and responded accurately to every command without significant hiccups -even at decent distances. I do wish it had a specific light as other compatible speakers when there is a pending notification, but that’s a minor nitpick.The icing on the cake is the SONOS’ Radio, which comes included in the app. While there are some commercials, they are not overly intrusive or distracting. There are several stations and curated playlists that are well put together for different genres. There is a subscription that upgrades sound fidelity and adds options, but it is not necessary. The shrill tinny speaker is about as harsh as chihuahua yapping at me while trying to sleep. My solution was to put bluetooth speakers wherever I could so that my better half would connect her phone to it and listen to her music the way the noise god intended to hear it. The speakers I have we ok but still not great. My wife mainly enjoys listening to her music while in the kitchen. The smallish speaker still didn't sound great. Setup was fairly easy, but you need to download the app, make an account to get it up and running. Once it is setup it is easy to get other devices connected to the speaker via bluetooth. The touch volume slider is pretty slick since I can slide my finger back and forth to raise and lower the volume without the tap tap tap (although you can by pressing the opposite sides of the slider). It is kind of sensitive but once you are used to it, it has been working well. There is no google voice assistant which would have been useful to integrate with our Nest Doorbell, but it isn't a dealbreaker. While we mainly have the Era 100 in the Kitchen, being able to bring it outside or quickly from room to room without being plugged in would have made this my go to speaker to use at home. Definitely a great sounding speaker and I am looking forward to adding a second (and possibly getting a Sonos Soundbar now).

Even with one speaker it fills the room with music. It even sounds good from the next room over. With our older bluetooth speakers I didnt care to listen to the music being pumped into other rooms as it didnt sound as pleasant. Setup was fairly easy, but you need to download the app, make an account to get it up and running. Once it is setup it is easy to get other devices connected to the speaker via bluetooth. The touch volume slider is pretty slick since I can slide my finger back and forth to raise and lower the volume without the tap tap tap (although you can by pressing the opposite sides of the slider). It is kind of sensitive but once you are used to it, it has been working well. There is no google voice assistant which would have been useful to integrate with our Nest Doorbell, but it isn't a dealbreaker. While we mainly have the Era 100 in the Kitchen, being able to bring it outside or quickly from room to room without being plugged in would have made this my go to speaker to use at home. Definitely a great sounding speaker and I am looking forward to adding a second (and possibly getting a Sonos Soundbar now).

The highs are crisp and clear, the mids are very balanced, and the low end is nice and full as well as punchy. I have listened to many genres from Pop, R&B, Hip Hop, Indie Rock, Alternative and Dance EDM. I’m very happy with how all of them sound and as weird as it might sound, I enjoy using this speaker because of just how good I think it makes everything sound.Note: You can add a second Ere 100 and set it up as a stereo pair and really increase the output and experience that you get from this product.The design of this speaker is also very nice. I love how the top touch controls are very responsive and very accurate at the same time. They feel almost natural and haven’t given any false input yet. The touch strip at the top of the speaker makes it easy to slide your finger up and down to make fast volume changes, and it can be very satisfying to use. The top of the speaker also has microphones so that you can use voice control for your preferred assistant (Google Home, Alexa) I personally use Alexa to control lights and listen to weather updates and it works great even when listening to music at higher volume, it can detect my voice. For those wondering you can disable the microphones via a toggle switch on the back of the speaker. There is also a button for Bluetooth on the back if you’re looking to quickly connect a device outside of the Sonos system. Good Job with the design of the controls Sonos.Now let's talk about the feature that I believe makes Sonos so special. I have always wanted to be able to play music throughout my house all at once. To be able to walk around the house and hear the same content as you walk through the rooms, there is just something so magical about that to me. The Sonos app makes all of this possible. Its super easy to group and ungroup speakers together and the controls in the app allow you to control the volume of each speaker or group in each room giving you total control of the over sound. Oh and another cool thing about the App volume control is when you have a group setup and adjust the main volume slider, it adjusts all volumes in that group simultaneously, keeping each rooms respective volume setting proportionate to how they were set. Like magic!!The other nice thing to know when buying into this ecosystem is that you can always grow your system to suit your needs as time goes on. This is the other feature that made me choose to buy into Sonos.Something that a lot of people have been asking for was a line-in port on a next gen speaker and Sonos has delivered. Now I can't comment on this feature on the Era 100, due to the separate dongle that is needed to allow you to use the speaker to connect a non-Sonos audio device into the system was not available at the time of this review. I have however used this feature on another Sonos product and the experience with that was good. I am being told this should be the same on the Era 100. The only time there was a slight delay, was when you group the line in device with other speakers, because the system has to process the analog signal on the line-in and send it to the other speakers in your system. But honestly this isn’t a big deal at all unless you are trying to use content with zero latency. The fact that you can take a turntable and plug it into this speaker and then broadcast that audio throughout your home is really cool.The Sonos App is by far one of the best music/audio source interfaces that I have ever used. You can literally add multiple streaming apps on top of multiple streaming apps. If you have Spotify or other streaming accounts and other family members have their own, you can add them too! You will be able to select the account you want to listen to from the music source page. The app also has many many features that allow fine control of your products and has been really enjoyable to use. It makes the speaker that much better having a good interface for using it.I will say that using this speaker for the past week has been a really good experience. So much so that I went out an purchased an Arc Soundbar, Sub and One SL’s for surrounds. That’s a whole different review but just know that I wasn’t planning on being this impressed and by falling in love with the Sound Quality and the Operation of this speaker. It’s a rare thing but I can whole heartily recommend this speaker and any other product from Sonos. Give yourself time to learn the ins and outs and you will be very happy.The only downside I could think of is that the speaker may not be in everyone’s budget. The products are pricey but for once, I believe you get what you pay for.

The capsule looks very modern due to the lack of physical buttons, but using the controls is still easy and very pleasant due to the haptic feedback. Overall, a great speaker for every use I could think of and an easy choice for lovers of high-quality sound. I heard various YT reviewers say Sonos has the best sound and now I know what they meant. They also said their speakers don't do well with Android navigation, but that wasn't my experience with this speaker. Bluetooth pairing, connection, and navigation were flawless with all my devices: Android phone, iPad, Windows laptop, and PC.

The built-in mic was always able to hear and understand my requests. It’s only meant to handle basic music and playback requests but it can tell you the time and what song is currently playing if you ask for it.I’m still getting familiar with it but I haven’t been able to figure out how to get it to play songs/albums that I purchased from either Amazon Music or Apple Music. If I say, “Hey Sonos, play Michelle Branch”, the Era 100 will just play one song and stop. So far, it seems like it can only play music continuously if I request it to play a particular radio station and not from a particular artist. The Era 100 also supports Plex but it was not able to find my local Plex media server which stores my local library of music.The Era 100 can also playback music through Bluetooth and line in (using an optional Line-In adapter). I successfully paired it with my Samsung tablet and playback using Bluetooth sounded great. I can only imagine how good it would be to get another one to pair up as a stereo pair.Different genres of music sounded great on it. I played music from different artists (Michelle Branch, Kim Wilde, etc.) and movie soundtracks (Superman, Aliens etc.) to test it out along with my tech and programming podcasts. The Era 100 does a great job with all of them.I am becoming a convert to the idea of having wireless speakers replacing my bulky conventional stereo system. After some checking I realized that the Loudness setting was enabled by default in the Sonos app. Once I turned the Loudness feature off I was able to adjust the equalizer to provide the bass sound quality I expected out of this speaker. Because the speaker is small it will never reproduce a booming bass response but its as good as it gets for speakers in this size range.The volume, play/pause, forward and reverse are touch sensitive buttons on the top of the speaker which is very convenient if you aren’t using a voice assistant. There is also a voice assistant touch button that allows you to turn the assistant on or off. On the back side of the speaker there is a Bluetooth pairing button along with a microphone on/off switch. The microphone on/off switch is great for anyone who wants to make sure the microphone is physically turned off. There is also a USB-C port on the back that can only be used for providing an in-line jack for audio and/or an ethernet connector by purchasing and connecting an optional dongle cable. Setting up the speaker is simple using the Sonos app. In the Sonos App you can set up the speaker’s wi-fi access, setup and choose the voice assistant, choose your streaming music source and configure the equalizer settings. You have the choice of Alexa or Sonos’ assistant – note Google’s assistant and Siri are not available. I have used both Alexa and Sonos voice control and both access my Amazon music without issue. I have also used Air Play and Bluetooth as well to stream music off various devices in my house. So far I am yet to find something that does not easily interface with this speaker.

There’s a feature called TrueSound that plays some tones while your phone listens to them, then it creates a sound profile that optimizes to the room. It worked perfectly and I didn’t have to tweak a thing. The rich bass and tight treble were amazing and I was stoked to listen to some of my tunes on the diminutive speaker with its gigantic sound.Adding it to my Google Home system is where I started to have problems. I could see that Sonos is there on the Google Home “works with Google” page so when I found the service on my Home app I was stoked at the future possibilities spreading Sonos speakers around my home along with my various Nest minis and Nest Hub Max devices for a household of sound.NOPE TO THATI could only use Home as a remote control. No chromecast capability without additional hardware such as a ChromeCast Audio (discontinued) or some other device like a Nest Hub with wired or Bluetooth connection. I think most high end speakers have some sort of Chromecast support now so to not be able to add the Sonos Era 100 to my chorus of speakers for a whole house sound scape really made me sad because the speaker sounds so good.When you’ve invested a lot of money in an ecosystem, things like this are dealbreakers so I’ll probably find another home for the speaker. It’s been years since Google and Sonos have been making audio stream groups and they haven’t collaborated at the smart level for any of the newest devices so I’m not going to hold my breath that they will do it in the future.As a standalone device, WOW do I love this speaker, and for those in simpler setups with one or two linked speakers on a floor with a few phones or Bluetooth devices.When it leaves my house I’ll be so earbroken, or maybe my ear’s hearts will be broken. So sad.

So far my time with the Era 100 has been an incredible improvement!PROS:- Sonos continues to push for sustainability with their unboxing process. On a side note, I recommend setting the EQ on your Era 100 to +6 bass and +4 treble, but to each their own!- Sonos did a great job listening to users by adding in two new hardware features: a line in option, and a physical microphone mute button. The USB-C line in is a great way to make the Era 100s be flexible while adding them to a wired system (like a record player) and the physical microphone mute button is great for added privacy over the simply touch button on the Sonos One.- Another great addition is having actual Bluetooth on these! It once again just adds necessary flexibility to the speakers if your WiFi goes down, or you are in a situation where Bluetooth simply works better. Nice to have that increased functionality!- Now of course, the biggest upgrade is the sound quality! The Era 100 has a stereo setup thanks to two tweeters that point to the right and left, and a larger woofer. All of this provides a much improved sound over the already great Sonos One, and can give bigger bass and overall great sound!- Of course, the Era 100 can be paired with another Era 100 for grouped music in one room or for being used as surround sound with a Sonos sound bar.- This is something small but I actually really like it, but the Era 100 has a screw hole at the bottom if you decide to wall mount these. Basically you buy the Sonos branded wall speaker mounts and it will screw into place on the bottom of the speaker. A little upgrade but I like it more than previous speakers that kind of have to rest in place.- The new touch control setup on the top of the Era 100 is another nice improvement. The slide volume control is really cool and once again you can change the song and pause/play easily as well.CONS:- For me, the clear and obvious biggest letdown is Sonos no longer having “Google Assistant” on their new Era 100 model. A huge selling factor for me on Sonos is being able to have high level audio functionality while also using Google to control my smart home devices. Of course there is still a chance that Sonos could bring Google Assistant to the Era 100 via a software update, so I really hope Sonos can see this is a letdown to a lot of users and bring Google back.- A lot of users would have liked to having an upward firing speaker on the Era 100 for Dolby Atmos playback. I know they gave that functionality in the Era 300 speaker, but I would have preferred the upward firing Atmos speakers in a smaller form factor (like the Era 100) as well.BOTTOM LINE:- If you are looking into starting your Sonos speaker collection or expanding, the Era 100 is now the go-to way to start. It offers a ton of increased flexibility and functionality, has much improved speakers by adding in a 2nd tweeter and giving it a bigger sub, and has a lot of smart features that work great. Having the Sonos Era 100 has made listening to music / movies so much fun and I know all users will enjoy these upgrades too!
