Sonos Era 300 vs One’s (as surrounds)I have a Beam Gen 2, Sub mini and 2x Ones as rear surrounds. After reading endless reviews of the Era 300’s I decided to purchase (UK based via a company offering a 30 days trial) so nothing to lose?!Initial thoughts- big, ugly and heavy…Honestly you cannot aesthetically have these in a ‘normal’ sized lounge/front room as rear speakers- they are enormous and heavy.Upon having my Sonos system (listed above for a year) I fired up the Era 300’s and did a Trueplay tune- I tried 4x Atmos enabled films (various scenes) and honestly noticed no more than an extra ‘Echo’ and more Bass, that was it. No better over-height frequencies, no extra enhancements, no more ‘Wow Factors’Now I’m a big Sonos fan, I started with the Beam gen 1 ... MoreSonos Era 300 vs One’s (as surrounds)I have a Beam Gen 2, Sub mini and 2x Ones as rear surrounds. No better over-height frequencies, no extra enhancements, no more ‘Wow Factors’Now I’m a big Sonos fan, I started with the Beam gen 1 about 2 years back, added the Ones as rears a few months later and I was blown away! Then I upgraded to the Beam gen 2 via the same retailer with the 30 day listen guarantee and it was a real upgrade to the Beam Gen 1 so I kept it. Then I did the same a few months later and added the sub, that was a gobsmacking upgrade- amazing improvement to sound so kept that. However the Era 300’s in this set up as a replacement for my One’s as rears- honestly for £450 each- terrible… I noticed barely any improvements, neither did my other half and we tried, we absolutely tried. I really wanted to keep them and was willing to pay the extra for the upgrade, we’d even planned where to put the existing One’s in the house to re-use as stand alone speakers but I honestly can’t even get close to giving a decent difference between the One’s as surrounds and the Era 300’s… Maybe it’s because we have a Beam Gen 2 and a sub; perhaps others upgrading do not have that pairing, or have never had One’s, or so on and so fourth… Absolutely appreciate that others will comment here to say the Era 300’s are the best thing since sliced bread; work for them, and will question where we had them placed, height settings and so on… I’m no Sonos guru, but after using for 1-2 years I know Trueplay, I get the app, adjust bass, treble, speech enhancement, night mode, compression settings and so on. Bottom line- they didn’t work for me- might for others but my overall option is that £450 a speaker vs whatever the One’s/Era 100’s cost is a no brainer- buy either of the latter.I did think before buying, when listening to my existing set up via decent Dolby Plus or DTS 5.1 content that surely it couldn’t get much better, and at the moment using Sonos equipment then my view is it can’t, unless I change manufacturer and spend silly money.I do hope this review helps.

As a stereo pair w/ a sub, the Era 300's will blow you away.

I bought them strictly for music listening as an upgrade to the Ones I roginally had paired with the sub. I have various other Sonos speakers around the house and Sonos Port connected to my nice 5.1.2 AVR setup in my living room as well.In short, I'm really impressed with the Eras for music listening in this configuration. I honestly had no idea how insanely powerful they would be compared to the Sonos Ones they replaced. These things can push some serious air and do so without any sense of strain. They sound quite good on their own but add in that bass from the sub and you have a rich round full sound you would not expect from speakers of this size.Atmos music mixes can be a small step up from their stereo counterparts. Or they can sometimes be a step backwards. But when you get a good Atmos mix it can be REALLY good, almost 3d-like. Once you've heard good Atmos mixes of music you are familiar with you will not want to go back to stereo. That said, most music is still in stereo and stereo is no slouch on this setup either. But it does depend on the mix and the genre of music a bit. Electronic music, acoustic, jazz, classical or anything else that has a sense of space and air shine on the Era 300's. Dense heavily compressed walls of sound as with rock and punk don't fare as well where the lack of forward facing midrange driver makes the vocals sort of recede a bit robbing them of their power and presence.Thankfully I have another nice setup for stereo listening with my living room speakers connected to the Sonos Port so I am fine with that drawback here. Most of the music I listen to benefits from the Era 300s distinct sound. If these will be your ONLY speakers, you primarily listen to music, and Atmos is not as important to you as full range sound the Sonos Fives are definitely the way to go. You certainly don't need the sub with the fives either. As far as surround Atmos speakers these will definitely perform well. They might be overkill though given how littles bass and midrange sonic information is actually in rear channels. But if you have a big room and an Arc and Sub Gen 3 already these will definitely take the whole system to the next level. The one downside for surround playback is once they are bonded to a soundbar and sub they can no longer be used strictly as a stereo pair for Atmos music playback. Of course you have your entire 5.1.4 surround system to playbackl Atmos music so maybe its fine. Given that a pair of these costs over 900 dollars it would be nice if Sonos woudl allow you to switch between the big surround system for movies and just using the Era 300's to listen to Atmos music.Still, I think most people will be really impressed with the Era 300's.

I am not sure why it has to be so complex but with a little bit of technical saviness and the ability to interpret the English language made it easy. Once I got it connected to WIFI and then connected to my Android phone I added YouTube music and went to a playlist I had made and immediately upon listening to part of the first song I was so excited I just had to get my wife to come listen with me. We sat together and listened to that whole playlist of songs and were very impressed. The Sonos Era 300 nade listening to music so enjoyable we could not resist and that was not even with High Defintion music or Dolby atmos. I can not wait to get into that. Now the problem is I immediately started thinking of building a surround sound system with Sonos speakers. I am thinking the newest subwoofer the Sonos Sub Gen 3 along with the Sonos Arc Soundbar, one more Era 300 speaker and two Era 100 speakers on the stands for rear surround. Okay enough daydreaming for now. I am very impressed with the Sonos Era 300 and the ability in the app to add all kinds of Android media apps to it. There is Apple Music, Sonos Radio, Tidal, Spotify, SoundCloud and then apps like IHeart Radio, TuneIn Radio and even Podcast apps like Pocket Cast and lets not forget about SiriusXM. I cloud go on and on but I have yet to discover evry compatible app because I was so anxious to listen to this engineering marvel. I really think a full surround system would be amazing. I did not even get near full volume on the Era 300 I only got up to 69 on the volume and it was plenty loud and sounded amazing. I am a first time Sonos user and I have to say I have never owned a in home Bluetooth speaker that immediately had me thinking about expanding me Speaker arsenal of more of that brand. The Sonos Era 300 is that impressive and while it does have pretty good low end it is not the same as a dedicated subwoofer. I have some other surround system even one with a dedicated Receiver Ampllifier and I am still drawn to the Sonos because of the Soundstage and the Dolby Atmos that I know will come with a complete Sonos surround system. While the Sonos speakers require a power outlet to plug them in they connect to each other wirelessly which is a very attractive feature. The amazing thing is they are both transmitters of there own WIFI signal and receivers of WIFI and Bluetooth signals. That means One Sonos speaker can put out the Sonos wireless signal to another speaker even if your router or home WIFI can not reach that speaker your closest Sono speaker in a room to room whole home array can. Sonos has very well thought out and well executed software and all the features needed to make them work in a wide field of application scenarios based on your needs. I should mention though that you will need a TV with Arc output for Dolby Atmos or you can buy an adapter from Sonos to get your non Arc TV to work with Dolby Atmos. Sonos pretty much has everything covered as far as I can see. While a Sonos system can get pricy if you get there high end or newest products there are many systems that cost more. Personally, I believe a Sonos surround system or even a whole house system including a surround in your media room or living room would satisfy even hardcore audiophiles like myself. Yes I like it loud with deep bass and a full sound stage from the lowest frequencies up to the highest ones. Thiis can be acheived with a premium Sonos system so do not hesitate to start building yours today!

Premium all the way around

The Sonos Era 300 is a premium speaker that delivers premium sound. No matter what is written in these reviews, words will not do the Era 300 justice.Out of the box, the unit is significantly different from the atypical portable Bluetooth speaker, a wall-mount unit, or even a stand alone sound bar. The design reminds me of a wave. This wave design houses four tweeters and two midrange speakers. These speakers are ergonomically placed within the housing in a manner that amplifies the Era’s ability to bathe the entire space in sound. Quick comment about the box itself. The package usually is just a means of protecting and transporting the goods within and then customarily discarded. I would believe most will keep and repurpose this container. The package usually is just a means of protecting and transporting the goods within and then customarily discarded. I would believe most will keep and repurpose this container. The box is substantially strong and even has a neat locking system. All or most of the materials used in the fabrication of the product box as well as the Sonos Era 300, are made from sustainable materials. When ordering, I really thought this speaker was smaller and more like a portable Bluetooth speaker. Upon receiving it, I realized that the Era 300 is like a prized piece of art that should be proudly displayed in your home or office away from harm. The Era 300 is actually heavy and a little bit bigger and broader than an average toaster. When setting up, you need to download the app to connect to Wi-Fi. Sonos did include Bluetooth connectivity, but the Wi-fi connection will deliver the strongest resource for clarity and sound quality. There is an ability to connect via a line dongle with an additional purchase of that dongle that I probably will not be doing myself since there is no need with my connected devices. Even though this is a standalone device, there are means to add it to a group. However, the pairable partners are limited to other Sonos devices. Once more, I cannot stress enough that this device alone is enough for most spaces. The acoustic output is impressive. We have a modest sized home, and this speaker will rattle the walls in the neighbor’s house. Part of the setup is the cool Trueplay feature, where the device will literally tweak its equalizer outputs to provide the most optimal sound for the area it is in. The touch controls are quite friendly, providing a pleasing haptic sound response. The coolest part by far, though, is Sonos’ commitment to our privacy with the ability to turn off the listening aspect of the unit.Again, I cannot write enough nice things about the Sonos Era 300 and highly recommend this unit. This device will immerse your listening environment in crystal clear audio output.

Replacement Era 300 On The Way
20 April 2023

Got two of the Era 300 speakers to pair as part of new sound system for a large (1500 sq foot living room). They are sleek nice looking speakers and the setup with updating was no problem. Adding them as a stereo pair and then combining with a Gen 3 Sub also no problem. Performed the spatial audio test/learning thing which was kind of fun and cool to do that. Makes it feel like you're dealing with something cutting edge. Maybe other new speakers from other manufacturers have this and it's standard operating procedure now, but I've never had speakers which have the ability to perform in that manner. Overall Ioved the speakers and when paired with the Gen 3 Sub and a Move the sound in that room was by far the best and most enjoyable it has ever been. Overall Ioved the speakers and when paired with the Gen 3 Sub and a Move the sound in that room was by far the best and most enjoyable it has ever been. I hadn't used multiple room set ups and groups yet but the App allows for groups so you can listen to the same music throughout other rooms in the house which is awesome. The only problem is that one of the Era 300 Speakers just stopped working. No indicator light on the front and the App tells you there is a connection error. Unplugged the 300 and re-plugged it back in. Nothing. Seems like it's not getting power. So I tried different outlets and even the cord from the other 300. Still nothing. So I called the customer service folks and went through some of their process to determine what the problem was and they couldn't figure it out so basically they are sending a new one and then I'll just send this one back. I'm sure it's just a defective speaker as the other 300, Sub Gen 3, Move, and One's are all working fine with no issues in regard to operation or power supply. Overall I'm quite happy with the Sonos environment and the quick shipping of the new speaker and warranty switch out also seems totally reasonable and fine from a customer service perspective. It's not surprising to me that a new piece of technology which I assume is in the initial stages of the whole mass production effort might have some rollout issues - which with the "No Power" thing seems to be indicative of something like that. Hopefully the new speaker won't have the same issue.

Sounds like a winner

The Era 300 is the smallest standalone Sonos speaker to have an upward firing speaker, enabling Atmos and “Spatial” audio content. On its own, the Era 300 provides fantastic stereo audio and impressive spatial audio from a single speaker. While I roughly knew the dimensions before it arrived, the 10.25” W x 6.5” H x 7.25” D hour glass didn’t quite blend in as hoped. After finding an acoustically engineered location determined by my wife who was not impressed with the size, I put the chonky fella in our dining room. After updating the Sonos app, I was able to easily set up and tune the speaker. After updating the Sonos app, I was able to easily set up and tune the speaker. It is nice that the Era can tune itself, which I thought provided a nice tune that was more convenient than the traditional TruePlay. Still, I opted to perform Trueplay so that I could wander around the room like a drunk wizard. I played various Apple Music spatial and stereo mixes to see how well it sounded compared to a smaller speaker like my HomePod and quickly realized they aren’t in the same category which is not that surprising considering the Era 300 is physically larger. Immediately I was impressed by the sound stage, which I found to be wide and balanced. I found the audio to be very clear and well defined even at lower volumes. If you were so inclined to push the drivers beyond a whisper you will find they are more than capable of filling the room with expansive, distortion free audio. The bass is rich and punchy but not over shadowing the mid-range. Though I found the audio mix usually to be good, it is great that Sonos provides an EQ to tune it to your liking. They even provide an adjustment for the height channel, which I initially found a little soft even for my dungeon like 8ft ceilings. While listening to spatial tracks, you find familiar songs produced to take advantage of the format for better or worse. Listening to Pink Floyd’s Us and Them, the Era 300 enveloped the space with rich details that brought out the individual instruments bringing the feeling of being in a larger room with the band. Fleetwod Mac’s iconic Landslide sounded incredible, layering acoustic and electric guitars with the Nick’s soulful voice carrying throughout. Of course my 3-year old daughter found the speaker faithfully reproduced the soundtrack to Encanto just as she remembered it yesterday. If you happened a second Era 300, you can stereo pair them or add them to an existing Arc setup for the complete 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos experience.Overall I am left impressed with what you get even considering the size, which it would take a stereo pair of any other brand smart speakers to compete. If you are looking for a single speaker setup or have the space for two, the quality and performance of the Era 300 is hard to beat.
