A Glitchy Setup you can Practice with every Power Outage

The subwoofer sounds awesome if you can get it to work. It's a sub, it's wireless, and you can put it anywhere in your room for a nice tight bass for you movies and binge watching. Although setting up the Arc soundbar was seemless, the setup of the Gen 3 sub was a frustration that required finding the System Info screen, learning how to hard reset the sub, and taking a couple of tries before it would work. Even though this was a brand new Sub in a new box, sold as new, the Sub reported that it had previously been "assigned to a room", which concerned me that somehow I got a refurb. I'm still not sure how I got it working, but wound up in some automated troubleshooting workflow that finally got it to work. Once that was done, all was well. Then we had a brief power outage.I noticed that evening the sub was showing a green light (whereas before there was no light). Green means "good" right? But there was no sound coming from the sub. I tried a couple of power cycles, but no luck. I noticed in the System Info that the soundbar was reporting that my network was not able to support a subwoofer or surround sound speakers. But it had been fine for weeks. Spent a half hour poking through menus on the Sonos S2 app. Finally went into network settings and re-setup the wireless connection and password. Voila ... it worked. But why did I have to do that? Why did a power outage cause the Sub to not seamlessly reconnect to my network like every other device in my house was able to?? Is this going to happen again? So right now, I'm holding my breath that the Sub stays stable. Apparently, the soundbar talks to the sub through your home network, not directly from the soundbar. More work needs to be done to the Sub's firmware to make the setup experience as seemless as the Arc soundbar. Right now it feels like two different teams worked on the Arc and the Sub.Even with these problems, I'm impressed with the sound quality of the sub and how it fills my large two-story living room. My router is not that old, and I'm pretty good with setting up wireless networks as I used to do in-home computer repairs. If you are okay with a potential technical challenge, this is a nice subwoofer. If you want plug-and-play, this is not going to be the sub for you.

It was so clear, smooth and I could hear all components of the song. When we watched a movie, i pushed the Bass up to max and almost broke the windows. I wish I was joking! The sound capability was incredible with a distinct lack of distortion from the Sub. It truly was only due to the poor quality plasterboard and construction materials that they make houses from that meant I had to reduce the bass! The system is very costly. I am not going to lie. You can buy a full entry level surround sound system with amplifier for what I paid for the Sub alone. But if you truly appreciate quality in your sound and aural experiences, the Sonos system is phenomenal. I highly, highly recommend this Sub and the other components of the Sonos system that I own.

Earthquake! At a price.
12 October 2022

I purchased this a couple of weeks ago. Installation proved to be a bit fiddly as the automated system linking didn't work at first. A quick check with sonos advice via the Web took me through extra steps to get it working fine. And then the earthquakes happened.... This was the last piece of sonos kit needed to add to my Arc and pair of Ones. The balancing that the system does automatically increased the base in the Arc, with the Sub at first seeming to be fairly quiet. But that all depends on the input. I placed the sub behind the sofa; with the first loud film scene I played, the sofa vibrated and I began to worry about the neighbours. I tried to reduce the base a little using the app but it made no noticeable difference; the system is so highly automated. ... MoreI purchased this a couple of weeks ago. I placed the sub behind the sofa; with the first loud film scene I played, the sofa vibrated and I began to worry about the neighbours. I tried to reduce the base a little using the app but it made no noticeable difference; the system is so highly automated. Tweaking the treble did work to give a little more high frequency sharpness which I have found a bit muddy with sonos - I admit though that my hearing is not too sharp at these frequencies. Overall I am very satisfied, although I will need to check that I am not shaking the neighbours too much. This is a very powerful speaker - probably a bit too much for small rooms so the new mini might be better for these. Sonos speakers are not cheap. Our ancient Kenwood stereo sound is in some ways as good if not better, but the convenience of playing hifi from an old phone, plus the magic of cinema sound in the living room, is terrific. One other thing, the latest version of the sub was announced last week, so there may be some variation.

The addition of Sub (gen 3) to my Sonos resources tops off the Immersive System with Beam (gen 2). I would love to brag and write that Sonos has provided a home full of sound, or even just a Great Room full of sound, but my living situation is far more modest. In New Orleans, Mother Nature plays any number or cards that can render one homeless. My current abode is part of an acquaintance's condo. As laundry rooms go, this one is fairly commodious at 15' x 11', but with paper thin interior and exterior walls. The result is not just satisfying - it is sublime. But when my landlord and the next door neighbors are absent, you'd better believe I crank up my Immersive System and transform this whole joint into CBGB, Carnegie Hall, The Grand Ol' Opry, The Metropolitan Opera, The Village Vanguard, and U2's or Taylor Swift's sound package blowing us out of the water at the Superdome. Musical ecstasy of every stripe. But that's a little secret between you and me.

Great subwoofer for your Sonos system

First let me say that this is an expensive sub. Of course you already realize that if you are looking at this. Heres what you get. Rich full base that really fills out the soundstage. Of course it seamslessly links to your sonos system for convenient setup and use. The sub is compact to help with placement if you want to tuck it away or put it under your furniture but interestingly it has a high gloss expensive looking finish that really makes it look like a piece of modern art. I was very surprised by that. Realistically if you are in the sonos family you are wondering whether to add a sub or use this or the mini. I cant speak to the mini but i do know that the sub was a dramatic improvement to my arc soundbar. It really boils down to how much you value a full audio experience vs a more limited but still really good sound experience. Obviously for me it was worth the money but one reassuring thing about Sonos is that you can be confident that you can always add the expanded pieces later. First time experience with Sonos and i have to say i have been impressed and i think you will be too.

It pains me to write this review, but...I have long wanted a Sonos system for my living room. When the first wireless devices appeared in the home theatre market, I chose a Philips Fidelio E6 system. It soon became clear that it was not a wise choice, as it had a lot of software problems and the manufacturer did not bother to fix them. When I saw that Sonos was gaining a bigger slice of the market in this area, I decided that my next living room speakers would be Sonos products. I bought the ARC first, and although it really does sound amazingly nice, I felt the bass sound was lacking. I bought a SUB Gen3 to go with it and have since been a little disappointed. The SUB can produce very thunderous bass, but it tires my ears very quickly when listening to music. I tried drastically turning down the volume in the app (maybe I'm around -4 or -5 now). I'm still not satisfied, somehow I constantly feel a sense of lack, I feel like I'm losing something from the music and getting bad resonances instead. I've tried moving the SUB, put it behind the couch, next to the TV, in front, behind, but somehow I keep feeling and hearing that the ARC alone sounds much better than with the SUB. I'm very sorry I didn't get a chance to try a SUB Mini, it might work more harmoniously with the system, but I've seen the SUB Gen3 recommended for the ARC everywhere. It didn't work for me, my partner watches e.g. Netflix without turning the SUB off in the app, he is so disturbed by the sound, which he says is also orphaned. When playing music, I also have the feeling that the system control "cuts" the frequencies in the wrong place, and with SUB on, the ARC sounds worse. The premium nature of the product itself is not in question, SONOS probably created the iPhone of speakers (although perhaps that title would have been better earned by VIFA if they could have improved further).Every time I update the software I expect that the situation will somehow improve, in fact I would be very happy if the ARC could somehow be forced to sound exactly the same as if the SUB was not connected. That alone would improve the sound of my SONOS system at home. So the overall effect for me so far is mediocre at best, and I'm a bit disappointed.

If you have been toying with the idea of a Sonos sound bar with the sub, please read on….First of all, thanks to the Richer Sounds team in Maidstone for their service and knowledge. I originally went to review sound bars at Curry’s (huge mistake). I asked three young lads for assistance as I was interested in learning more about the product they had. Not one person could answer any questions and one even asked me to come back when the local rep was on-site as ‘he will know more than me’. Leaving curry’s more than disappointed, I decided to try Richer Sounds. Boy was this the best decision of the week. The level of service I received was incredible and speaking to people who are knowledgeable and passionate makes such a huge difference. This is what most people dream of when thinking about making quite a large purchase on speakers and is what you certainly don’t get online. If my wife wasn’t with me at the time, I’m sure I would have bought more! A fresh of breath air actually to be sold something by someone who clearly enjoys what they do. Thank you!As for the speakers, I not going to get into the tech stuff as it’s all available online, however, I thought I would share my personal thoughts. I have been thinking about buying a sound bar for a while as we watch a lot of family films in our house and listen to a lot of music and I have been reading lots of reviews and watching a lot videos on YouTube to research what I should be buying. The Sonos beam and sub kept coming up as a good option, however, I was hesitant as I wasn’t sure if it would be loud enough and have enough depth and base. Boy was I wrong! The beam and sub set up is absolutely insane and I wish the videos online did them justice but they simply don’t. I have never experienced sound like it whilst watching a film. In fact, I have had to turn the base right down otherwise I’m scared cracks may appear around the house! The quality of sound is absolutely phenomenal and I can’t find the words to explain how happy I am with my set up. I genuinely don’t know how I would benefit spending 5 times the amount on a different system.I’m an engineer and very particular (fussy) with certain things hence the reason it took me a while to commit to buying a decent sound bar & sub and wished I bought this sooner. You will NOT be disappointed buying this.Well done Sonos and well done Richer Sounds for such a good overview of the available options to me in store. When I add to my Sonos set up (which I will), I will now only buy them from Richer Sounds (even if they are more expensive) due to the quality of service I experienced. Bravo!

Unbelievable at first but then 14.12 update.......
18 October 2022

At first this sub was a 10/5! I bought this to pair with my Sonos Arc and one surrounds. The system was awesome! I have it all running through a 65 inch LG C1 and the entire experience was out of this world, truly amazing. I've always been a huge A/V person and this set up was out of this world, I was very happy with my entire A/V setup for the first time in my adult life. Then the update happened...... The dreaded 14.12 update. Yes it helped the Arc and I can hear the improved sound stage on the Arc, that was good. The bad on the 14.12 was it completely rendered my Sub Gen 3 all but useless compared to what it was. I cannot stress enough how bad it is, its to the point that if a fix isnt put in place by Christmas (Oct. 2022 now) I will be selling all of my Sonos ... MoreAt first this sub was a 10/5! I cannot stress enough how bad it is, its to the point that if a fix isnt put in place by Christmas (Oct. 2022 now) I will be selling all of my Sonos products and moving over to a Bose 900 with a 700 sub. I feel bad for anyone who is new to the Sonos sub after this update. If I was new to Sonos and paid $750 for this current version (14.12 update) I would return my sub and go with Bose.Anyone who experienced the pre updated version of the Sonos Sub Gen 3 knows what I am talking about. Anyone who is thinking of going with Sonos and the Sub Gen 3 I would advise to hold off until you can verify that a fix has been put in place.Sonos touts their "trueplay" for the Sonos systems and I will say it works wonderfully. Having said that in order to utilize the full potential of the Sub Gen 3 you must disable trueplay (disabling most of the benefits of all these updates). Trueplay is a must for this system, you really have to have it enabled (and go through the tuning process) to take advantage of the full potential of the arc and surrounds. Unfortunately, trueplay basically renders the sub useless. Those of us who know the pre update sub know what I am talking about.Sonos, what are you waiting for? At this point if this isn't an "all hands on deck" situation over there at Sonos do you really care what your customers think? I've been on the chats and read the dozens of disgruntled threads. What are you all waiting for? Is a fix even being worked on? Can we at least get an update on what's going on?Sincerely, disappointed
