I must admit I had my reservations after reading some of the reviews, but I’ve been more than pleased with the results. Yes, you do need more light because of the f-stop loss and the autofocus does take slightly more time but with good light, the shots are impressive. Pretty darn sharp and the extra reach is exactly what I needed for my bird photography. Definitely worth the buy though I wish it were a little less expensive. All things considered, I’d recommend it if you want extra reach!

I bought this Sony 1.4x Teleconverter to use with my Sony A7R5 and Sony 200-600mm lens. Before purchase, I got tack sharp 61 mpx images at a 600mm reach. Now I get tack sharp images at an 840mm reach. It doesn't produce quite as well in APS-C crop mode. Image quality is hit and miss. I have also used it with my Sony a6600 APS-C camera which gives a 1260mm reach. Image quality is spotty. Some images are razor sharp and some are soft. The loss of one stop of light doesn't seem to make much difference with my kind of shooting. Photographing birds and wildlife at F9 on cloudy bright to sunny days gives good results with ISO's below 1000. I sometimes shoot at F11 and I still get good images. For my camera and lens, I give it 5 stars.

Lensrentals gear is always in great condition. I rented 2 Sony lenses (200-600 mm and 100-400. Also a Sony 1.4 Teleconverter. All were in like new condition. I used them on Sony’s FX6 cameras. Both were amazingly sharp. Auto focus was fast and accurate.I have been using Lensrentals for over 10 years. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.They are my “goto palace” for all my photo equipment needs.
This teleconverter came with a bit of disappointment for me. I'm a sports photographer and after shooting with every main lens in Nikon and Sony I got to say this specific teleconverter is mediocre in low light conditions at best. I didn't expect to pull miracles but expected for something at this price point to be a solid and reliable piece of equipment to go with my 70-200 F2.8GM lens. It works perfectly in the middle of the day, but as soon as the light starts falling it causes the images to lose considerable sharpness. Enough for me to hesitate if I should keep using under low light conditions. The loss of 1-1.5 stops of light, (at full extension on the Sony 100-400 you get f8) causes some slower AF and loss of dynamic range. On bigger slower subjects you will not notice it that much, but on smaller birds it might trouble you if you are using a high end camera like the r73(which I am). Also there is a reduction of sharpness. Again more obvious on smaller subjects. If you are going to use this extender with 70-200 2.8 lens maybe its a different story. You can watch photos taken with this extender on my Flickr account sfiron. Look for Giraffes and Bee-Eaters. The first ok the second shows for the soft sharpness. I shot a test chart at about 25 feet from the camera. When the test shots were viewed at the same image size (the chart was the same size on the screen) the images with the converter were just a bit sharper and of course were of higher resolution. If you do your research on these you will find that many people who review them are not fans. I’m here to tell you they are right! I’ve done my own side by side comparisons and yes the sharpness is compromised. If this doesn’t bother you then get it. If your like me and like sharp photos, I’m not a fan of cropping by I rather crop and it will still look sharper. I’ll be looking to sell this. 1st picture with teleconverter and second picture without. I don’t know if they down size the file here tho. Good luck on your choice!
