A Major Disappointment

This is a great TV in a lot of ways, but it has some serious problems. I believe these are all design problems... I don't think I just got a lemon.(1) When you turn off the TV, the Wi-Fi connection is not properly maintained. I often see error messages when I turn the TV back on saying "No Wi-Fi connection" or "Internet connection lost". Most of the time this will resolve itself fairly quickly, but it's still annoying, and sometimes it can take well over two minutes to re-connect.Sony support will most likely respond with a link to an article suggesting you try things like resetting your cable modem and router. This advice is worthless as the fault lies with the TV, not with your network. The only way around this issue is to turn off the Wi-Fi and connect the TV directly to your router with an Ethernet cable. At least that's the only thing that worked for me.(2) I was shocked to find that this TV has some really bad motion problems. For example, a scene will cut to an actor who simply turns their head, and it looks like half-a-dozen frames were dropped (very jerky motion). I'm seeing frame-drops all over the place. Frankly, I never imagined an advanced TV like this with a native 120hz refresh rate and motion interpolation support would have any problems like this, but it does.Once again, the suggestions from Sony have been worthless. I've tried everything possible including doing a factory reset on the TV, but the motion problems still persist.(3) If you wish to use the TV speakers, be aware that there are no sound modes. Fortunately there is a 7-band equalizer in the settings, but it's pretty much worthless. While it sort of works, the adjustment range is so limited that I can hardly tell it's doing anything, so forget tailoring the sound to your liking.(4) I really don't care for the stands that came with this TV. First, they are extremely thin, with very tiny pads on each end. Second, Sony purposely designed the feet so the TV will tilt back on an angle rather than stand up straight. This seems crazy to me, but apparently Sony does this with all their TVs. I had to stick small felt pads under the back feet to correct the problem. It's very unfortunate that Sony released this model before it was ready, and now I'm stuck with all these problems. The motion problems are the worst as there is no work-around.

In the end I chose to ignore the initial set up instructions and mounted the TV on a wall using my experience and common sense and had no problems at all. While I attached the wall bracket to the TV I fitted the legs supplied to support the TV. They are a simple ‘push in’ fit.The Sony support site has more detailed instructions including a Start Up Guide, Wall Bracket Mounting, Safety Instructions and so on. I was very impressed with the build quality and design of the TV and it’s general appearance. There was hardly any rim at all round the screen which gave it a very attractive sleek look. The initial set up is quite simply a matter of following the on-screen instruction after switching the TV on, via one of the remote controls. I used the numerical TV remote control for the initial TV set up and found it quite easy and quick to do. The only thing I needed to do was to turn the volume up a little more. There is also an option in the set-up to select the correct sound quality for wall mounting, or stand mounting, depending on where you have located the TV at home. The sound from the speakers was so good I see no need at the moment to add a soundbar. On switching the TV on the first thing I noticed was the superb picture quality and sound. The colours were sharp, vibrant and true to life, which I find is now typical of Sony TV’s. There’s also a built-in light sensor that automatically adjust the picture according to the room light conditions. To set up Google TV I found the other remote control (with built in microphone) simple to use and I had an easy Google ‘set up’ because I have a Google account which I already use. If you have no Google account it is a simple matter of following the on-screen instructions, going through all the blurb and download the app to your smart phone. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney and YouTube channels are all available to use at the touch of the appropriate button on the remote control. Don’t worry if you have no Google account because you can still receive YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Netflix etc, without one. The built-in microphone on the remote control seemed to work well when I used it and understood my verbal instructions. If you have other add-ons like a soundbar, Blu-ray/DVD player etc. there are plenty connections on the back left side of the TV. The connections are just accessible if the TV is mounted on a wall. There is an On/Off button on the centre front of the TV, just below the Sony label. I mention this because it took me a while to realise it was there. This is a great user-friendly TV, easy to set up with superb picture and sound quality straight from the box. There are no fiddly adjustments required before enjoying the viewing experience. I would certainly, without hesitation, recommend it as a great buy.

Samsung and LG don't have anything that can compete at this price yet... their LCDs do 4K @ 60hz with no HDMI 2.1 (yet are moderately less expensive than this) or you are forced to buy a new tech QLED / OLED model (that is significantly more expensive than this). It will never compare to the OLED models as far as brightness and contrast go, but if you can afford one of those you shouldn't be considering an LCD anyway. If you are like me and want the best 4K gaming experience you can get while still being able to pay your rent, I promise you the Sony X85K will not disappoint. Don't let the price fool you. Yes, it's "old" tech... but you won't find a TV that can do what this can for less, no matter where you look. So for a next-gen upgrade on the cheap, it's a no-brainer for any gamer and worth every single one of those pinched pennies. If you were on the fence about getting this bad boy, I'm here to give you the push you need. See you on the other side, where the grass really is greener (thanks to Dolby Vision).

How could I not give a perfect 5 of 5 overall review for a television that is so smart it’s somewhat doing parts of my iPad Pro and Laptops old entertaining tasks for me!!!And the sheer reason I made this purchase was to finally test out my Launch Day xbox Series X in 120hrz or 120 FPS by utilizing the HDMI 2.1 ports found in the 3rd and 4th slots.I have had so much fun just messing about with the various settings that Sony offers for your pictures- one great feature is that you can have separate settings for your video and Audio for each HDMI port!!The Google smart TV interface based on android is a breeze to learn for me an apple guy at heart - but they still have the apple support needed to run my iphone and ipad to this Sony 4K TV!!!!I have not ever been ... MoreHow could I not give a perfect 5 of 5 overall review for a television that is so smart it’s somewhat doing parts of my iPad Pro and Laptops old entertaining tasks for me!!!And the sheer reason I made this purchase was to finally test out my Launch Day xbox Series X in 120hrz or 120 FPS by utilizing the HDMI 2.1 ports found in the 3rd and 4th slots.I have had so much fun just messing about with the various settings that Sony offers for your pictures- one great feature is that you can have separate settings for your video and Audio for each HDMI port!!The Google smart TV interface based on android is a breeze to learn for me an apple guy at heart - but they still have the apple support needed to run my iphone and ipad to this Sony 4K TV!!!!I have not ever been a Sony Guy and this being my first ever Sony tv I can understand why I have always found their products to be a little more expensive then the competition equal models right out the box even - as it was a tad heavier then the 43” Samsung model I had just returned to upgrade to this Sony TV. And not heavy as in the sense of a problem it just was much better constructed and the two stands were designed to latch in the bottom of the TV like they should with the click similar to a seat belt ….The HDR10 is so bright and full of vibrant colours on Game mode and on regular mode as well. It’s a true HDR10 experience with NITs being in the 600-1000 range I would assume. Destroying my 32” 4K LG 60Hz HDR10 monitor that I have currently been gaming on.Fifa 23 and NHL sure are not yet 120FPS but trust me - there is an advantage to using this fast moving image producing Sony TV over the others I’ve tried. And wow playing COD war zone in 120Hz and Halo online in 120FPS it is a wonder I have actually gotten points in the competitive games because I’m sure everyone else is using the 120fps advantage that I finally now have -So pick up this TV it’s under $1000 CAD for 120Hz !!! How can you go wrong

Setup was easier to do with my techie son, took about an hour. Beware that the legs are spaced 30" apart on the 43" TV, it barely fit on the tall dresser. Then I spent about 5 hours tweaking the settings, depending on whether it was regular cable tv or streaming video. (Had to sign in to all my video apps, another pain clicking each letter of the alphabet a hundred times, but you're once and done with that). Sound was a bit muddy until I set it to 5 on almost maxing out the dialogue enhancement, and I have excellent hearing. After the small tweaks to the settings, the picture really came to life. I did detect a momentary bit of a side-to-side motion stutter on the movement for certain action scenes (and oddly enough, people shaking their heads), even though I had it ... MoreSetup was easier to do with my techie son, took about an hour. Sound was a bit muddy until I set it to 5 on almost maxing out the dialogue enhancement, and I have excellent hearing. After the small tweaks to the settings, the picture really came to life. I did detect a momentary bit of a side-to-side motion stutter on the movement for certain action scenes (and oddly enough, people shaking their heads), even though I had it set to overcome that and the tv is 120hz. Not sure what is causing it. I made sure I bought the $50 certified gold HDMI cable (an unexpected expense) to get the best 4k transmission, even though Spectrum cable probably doesn't transmit in 4k yet, because I watch a lot of streaming video. Also, I hate the remote. I thought I was getting an extra remote with number buttons on it, but apparently that is only done with the 85J models, not this year's 85K model. Remote has tiny labels, buttons are hard to find in dim light, not easily discernable by touch, and no backlight. Instructions are minimal at best, no really in depth manual is available that goes into detail on all the settings. I still haven't figured out if I have voice commands or not, haven't been able to get that working. I am still stuck using 2 remotes, like my old tv, one for cable and one for streaming. Universal cable remote from Spectrum was paired properly to new TV but lacks certain functions, so I need the Sony remote to watch streaming video. But all in all, it's a big improvement over my old 2015 model (different brand). I'm sure I'll be making a few more adjustments before I'm completely settled in with it. A better manual would REALLY help with that. Since my old TV was no longer going to get streaming video from Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, HBO Max, etc., and I didn't want to use a Fire Stick, I decided to upgrade, Glad I did, nice to have it all on one screen. PS - I called Sony twice to see if I could get the remote with the number buttons like they offered with the 85J. One rep said I could order it and gave a part #, for $50. When I looked up part # in their link, it was for the 85J, not 85K. I called back, was given another part # for 85K. Tried to find it to buy, it was only available for 85K models sold in the U.K. So I'm still trying to find a compatable, fully functioning universal remote with number buttons for this model (Sony if you're listening...help).

Perfect ps5/Xbox X series Tv!
9 July 2022

I recently purchased the Xbox x series console but my tv altho very nice did not have the recommended features to maximise the system to 4k uhd 120hz and that's the exact reason i bought this console in the first place was the graphics power !This tv is the perfect size for gaming / bedroom the quality and picture is pretty much the best , features exact specifications for ps5/Xbox to be able to play on true 4k uhd 120hz (120fps) in the console settings with 2.1 HDMI port hookup! All you have to do is setup the tv, go into channels/input HDMI settings and set to VRR for that port and you will be able to run 4k uhd WITH 120 HZ setting (FPS) for all games in the console settings as this is required by the systems (ps5, Xbox x/s)The difference is unexplainable for ... MoreI recently purchased the Xbox x series console but my tv altho very nice did not have the recommended features to maximise the system to 4k uhd 120hz and that's the exact reason i bought this console in the first place was the graphics power !This tv is the perfect size for gaming / bedroom the quality and picture is pretty much the best , features exact specifications for ps5/Xbox to be able to play on true 4k uhd 120hz (120fps) in the console settings with 2.1 HDMI port hookup! All you have to do is setup the tv, go into channels/input HDMI settings and set to VRR for that port and you will be able to run 4k uhd WITH 120 HZ setting (FPS) for all games in the console settings as this is required by the systems (ps5, Xbox x/s)The difference is unexplainable for first person shooters it becomes instantly smoother better quality gameplay that is noticable as soon as you start moving in-game almost lifelike movement without any stuttering or boxing movement as you would feel with 60hz tvs and with all the newer games coming out with better and realism graphics it would be a shame not to be able to unlock full potential of your console. For $899 to get a top of the line tv with true 4k uhd 120hz not motionrate boosting crap as you would see in other advertised tvsBottom line is you bought a ps5/Xbox Xs for its capability and power and this achieves it1. HDMI 2.12. True 120hz native3. 4k x reality pro picture quality (insane pixel resolution)4. Dolby vision / game / soundIt has the exact requirements for consoles for maximum performance you will thank me later!

Surprises During Setup
23 March 2023

Purchased this TV to replace a functioning but aggravating Vizio TV that was about 3 years old. Generally, we are satisfied with this TV and intend to keep it. But, there are some surprising issues when compared to previous TVs we've owned. Our environment consists of a sound bar connected to the TV via an optical cable, and a Mac Mini connected to the HDMI1 port.Issue #1: the volume control on the TV DOES NOT regulate the volume over the optical cable connection, as previous TVs have done. You will need to regulate volume using the soundbar's own remote. Since we lost ours years ago, we get by by using an older TV remote that was "married" to the soundbar.Issue #2: During initial channel scan, the TV found 20 digital UHF stations. However, a number of these do not come in well enough to bear watching. The List function on the remote shows all of these, and there does not appear to be a way of removing stations that you don't want to view from the list. You can use Parental Control to block them, but they still appear on the list. Previous TVs allowed you to delete these items from the list.Issue #3: There is no documentation provided on how to effectively use the remote, either shipped with the product or available from Sony's website. So, you're left to flounder around to discover for yourself how things work, leading to the likelyhood of doing easy things the hard way.

Thought I bought a Sony TV got a Google TV
20 December 2022

I am a longtime only Sony TV buyer. Always admired the build and picture quality over the years. In fact, I don’t think I have had a single unit give out on me and I tend to keep my tv for years. I bought this unit as a second tv to a similar model I purchased in 2017, which has been great!I was a little disappointed just unboxing this unit when I noticed the unit’s was thicker around back top to bottom. The other unit I had has a very thin profile when viewed from the side. The older unit used a bit of design trick by offsetting the electronic bulge from the edges so the screen/tv appears thinner. That design has changed making the unit appear thicker top to bottom from the side profile. Maybe just a personal quirk but I don’t like it. That design has changed making the unit appear thicker top to bottom from the side profile. Maybe just a personal quirk but I don’t like it. However, my biggest issue with this unit or just the state of Sony TVs, is that they have been taken over by Google software. Save for the Sony logo on the front and you would be convinced this is a Google TV, meaning a TV built by Google. Now I am sure many people have no issue with that. But I don’t think any consumer should purchase a consumer device like a tv (especially at a premium price point like Sony) and be subjective to the level privacy tracking enabled out-of-box by the Sony/Google android-based TV. You are literally paying to be tracked and advertised to. I spent nearly forty-minutes trying to disable all the tracking-related options. Prolonged by the fact that I disabled one or more options that stopped the Home Screen from appearing correctly and had to factory reset. I won’t even get started with all the dark-patterns being used to keep these settings in place. Sony seems to have done nothing to prevent or protect it customers from this. Instead, Sony seems to have pimped us all to Google because if don’t want to give into the account demands of Google built-in software these Sony units are less useful and expandable. If Sony wants to use Google TV, it should at least insist all tracking is opt-in by default and a consumer can also have a fully anonymous experience in their chosen TV ecosystem. Otherwise, rebrand it Google TV and I would know to stay away from it. Same beautiful Sony picture quality but I am not pleased with the overall experience.

Unparalleled picture and sound packed into TV
25 July 2022

A well needed replacement to my outgoing KD-49X8309C, the Sony X85K immediately boasts presence in my living room. The 55 inches makes so much difference on its own, and then you turn it on. As an openly honest Sony fan, it was very easy for me to navigate through the set up screens, connecting to wifi and also setting up what devices connected to what HDMI ports. The X85K has 4 HDMI with two of them supporting 120hz. This was a fantastic bonus having two slots capable of high quality. I've used it playing Destiny 2 crucible and you can see the absolute clarity of everything as if you're seeing things in new eyes for the first time. Let's not forget to mention activating HDR. The colours are more sharper and much brighter and darker colours are more clear and ... MoreA well needed replacement to my outgoing KD-49X8309C, the Sony X85K immediately boasts presence in my living room. The colours are more sharper and much brighter and darker colours are more clear and precise. Bear in mind this not the top of the range product but it packs such a great punch in its class. The internal sound has an equaliser too. So love this feature, and it can be put to great use if you don't have an amp. For the kids, it comes packed with the usual streaming packages or apps and if they are not already preloaded, the great internal drive installed will allow you to download very quickly what you require. Another great thing to note with this product is that it comes with two remotes. One with all the buttons and numbers and functions, and a smaller one with key buttons on. Couldn't let this gesture not go unnoticed. Naturally unless you need the main controller, it saves it being hammered. Very well thought of especially when you have kids demanding to switch between streaming channels. The other great feature to note is the external drive input. This means you can attach an external drive and record! Glad it has been passed on. Overall, this TV is from my perspective a fantastic leap up with all the features I need for gaming and my kids need for streaming. I would absolutely recommend this Sony product.
