My old Samsung TV died on me over the Christmas/New Years holiday period, and I only ever considered purchasing two brands: Sony or Samsung. When I came across the X77L 55" - it was at a great price, cheaper than from any of the other retailers such as JB HiFi and Harvey Norman and Sony was very clear on stock being available and the delivery date if purchased. I have the NVIDIA Shield TV, so I don't need the Android TV installed inside the TV. But I have to deal with it. By dealing with it, I mean - sometimes it does not start with the right HDMI input active. Not always, but regularly, enough to annoy you because you have to find its original remote and switch the input. And it happens not only with Shield; the same issue exists with PS5. You can make it less smart by refusing to log in to your Google account. In this case, you can still access the Netflix or other Streaming apps preinstalled on the TV. But it will try to show you ads on the Home screen.Then, System notification -- the TV will show them to you even if you use an external source. Bought this SONY TV because of the compatibility features with PS5. Overall I’m very disappointed. Downloaded the MAX (HBO) app, MAX does not show up in the home page under Apps. Ok I’ll try searching for it, search for it, okay found the app, click on it and it immediately starts playing a movie called Max. Every time I go to use the app, immediately starts playing this random movie. When i started watching something, the fast forward/rewind controls dont work. Only other button to press is pause/play. The Google Assistant/voice control doesnt work 90% of the time. It will acknowledge a command but then wont excute. Maybe the Google assistant doesnt work because during setup i did not give them permission to gather and sell my personal data. Take my word for it, everything about this TV designed by Google is genuinely terrible, not thought out, and clearly didn’t go through enough product testing. Somehow not surpirising that the largest tech company in the world makes absolutely terrible software.

The sound quality is also very good compared to past LCD flatscreens we've owned. A sound bar and stereo system is hooked up though, and that is used for most viewing. We set it up as a "dumb" TV and haven't had any problems. What sold us on the Sony compared to other models was that it has great picture quality from all viewing angles, and that is confirmed from our use. Couple of things to note. I realized when you’re looking at TVs in store you can’t really assess the quality in sound and picture because of the ambient noise and harsh lighting. The sound quality is what stands out the most. The only issue is that I notice sudden increases in sound more and none of the adjustments in settings seen to make a difference. HOWEVER it has a Bluetooth feature that I can hook up to my AirPods Pro when I don’t want to disturb anyone. The picture quality is so good that I’m becoming a glare snob. I have a note on this at the end.Onto the review!I was stunned at the quality of picture and sound. I realized when you’re looking at TVs in store you can’t really assess the quality in sound and picture because of the ambient noise and harsh lighting. The sound quality is what stands out the most. The only issue is that I notice sudden increases in sound more and none of the adjustments in settings seen to make a difference. HOWEVER it has a Bluetooth feature that I can hook up to my AirPods Pro when I don’t want to disturb anyone. The picture quality is so good that I’m becoming a glare snob. It actually motivated me to finally put up those curtains I’ve been putting off.Sure, I could have spent less on a cheaper product and it would have been comparable with my old tv… but if I’m honest that model would work for 3-5 years before sound/picture issues would start. I wanted something that was going to last longer and everything I read about Sonys is how they last so long people usually get rid of them because they’re upgrading to the new model for better sound/picture.Open Box review: always do this if you have the option. Even the lowest quality option, as long as it’s not refurbished, is basically the same new product minus packaging and/or a few factory accessories you either throw out or replace with better ones.
