Completely unjustified

I switched to Sony from Nikon last year because of a few bad experiences with Nikon customer service and was not expecting to run into the staggering price tag for CFexpress-A cards when CFexpress-B cards are twice as fast and half the cost. Further, I was hoping to see type A cards decrease in price as the platform increased in popularity, but this hasn't even begun to occur. I could justify this price if, and only if, Sony managed to crank the read/write speeds up high enough to validate it.I bought a couple ProGrade 160gig cards on special for when I need to shoot at higher cycle rates, but otherwise, sticking to SD cards.

Don't buy the 80GB! Lower speed!

CFExpress Type A is slower than Type B but more expensive. This is already common knowledge for its users. However, Sony only put one NAND flash into the 80GB instead of other cards that have two NAND flash chips. That means it only achieves half the speed of the higher capacity cards while having the same $/GB unit price.Sony should be ashamed of putting this product out with the rated speed sticker. Extremely disappointed.

Excellent Card overall

This is a great card, albeit expensive, too expensive. With the A1 camera, the write speeds are so fast. They make a great combo. I only wish the A1 could use Type B cards. I highly recommend the 80gb or 160gb cards to anyone shooting wildlife with the A1. The investment over time will be worth it.

Expensive but offers key features
5 October 2021

CFexpress Type A cards are only manufactured by Sony currently although Prograde are in the process of launching their own so the price will go down. If you want to record video in some high quality modes, Sony cameras that are capable of doing so require the use of CFexpress cards. Same if you want to shoot high FPS burst rate such as the 30 FPS on the Sony a1. If you don't need to use either of these features, you're better off using cheaper SD cards.

Good but Overpriced
18 March 2021

I purchased Sony 80GB CFexpress type A card for my Sony a7siii. If you want to record in highest frame rates you have to have this card. Card works as expected. Nice surprise was that after formatting actual card capacity was 79.99GB, which is phenomenal compare to my other Sony XQD 128GB card that I use in another camera that lost after formatting almost 5GB of its capacity. The only reason I give this card 4 stars is that it is unnecessarily overpriced. I do not see the reason why Sony Alpha cameras cannot accept CFexpress type B cards that are both cheaper and faster.

It's Great But....

The card is very fast. I can shoot continuously with my A7iv RAW compressed without any lag. Which I love. The but is that it is pricey. However, if you watch you can get them used right here on B&H. Which I have done, and I am good with that too.

OH MY WORD - AMAZING!
5 May 2021

Destined for the SONY alpha 1, these cards are superb. There is a dedicated slightly narrower section in each of the two battery slots on the a1 for this card. Does it work? Yup! Like lightning. The a1 processes images super fast and this 80GB TOUGH card gobbles them as fast as they arrive. Popped into the SONY card reader which is available from B&H (Sony MRW-G2 CFexpress Type A/SD Memory Card reader) this card delivers superb speeds. I have four for my a1 - rather than the 160GB version - because I'm wary of losing 160GB if it gets lost or corrupted. I rather lose only 80GB. But I'm not gonna do that. I hope.

Sony 80GB CFexpress Type A TOUGH Memory Card is blazing fast
20 October 2022

I purchased the Sony 80GB CFexpress Type A TOUGH Memory Card for my Sony A7IV. Works flawlessly. I was able to take hundreds of photos and shoot several 4K videos with no issues. Uploading the photos to my hard drive was super quick and seamless.

Sufficient and efficient, but painful on the wallet
3 November 2021

Pros:These cards ARE fast. Transfer rates are almost exactly as advertised. They work excellently in the A1 in clearing buffered images. They're dependable and so far have worked without error. And the backward-compatible SD slots are kinda nice if you need it.Cons:The size is miniscule. I have big hands. They're difficult to manipulate and I imagine will be very easy to lose. Coupling that with the borderline absurd price tag, I am not enthusiastic about the future of my CFE-A cards. Plus, the CFE-B counterparts are half the cost, and TWICE as fast.Running two of these right now and am waiting patiently for other manufacturers to start selling them at more realistic prices...

Works well
3 November 2021

I've gotten used to media being expensive since I have owned various cinema camera packages in the past (ARRI, RED, etc). This is fairly pricey when using it with a lower cost camera like an FX3, but it works like a charm. I was able to record 4K 60p on the FX3 and it worked as expected. I also did some tests and the XAVC S-I definitely works much smoother on my computer than XAVC S (at the cost of more data), so I definitely think these cards are necessary to alleviate computer power in post. Knowing I can record various modes on this card without worrying about what an SD card's rating is a good for peace of mind when working on any project.
