I have aways been impressed with the picture quality and product range from Sony, and this TV again provides an overall great viewing experience, with just a few gripes mainly around setup/installation.My previous 2 Sony TVs both had swivel stands, where this no longer seems to be available, or is extremely limited. The new feet like stands were very easy to install but leave the set primarily static and it would be nice to see the flexibility of swivel stands back. The install setup was also a little repetitive and at times confusing (for instance, the TV identified my Sony BluRay Player on HDMI2 but then later asked me to assign a device to HDMI2, which I did, and now shows the BluRay twice).Otherwise the UI is aesthetically pleasing, current and relatively ... MoreI have aways been impressed with the picture quality and product range from Sony, and this TV again provides an overall great viewing experience, with just a few gripes mainly around setup/installation.My previous 2 Sony TVs both had swivel stands, where this no longer seems to be available, or is extremely limited. Make no mistake about it, this is 2-person install. Don't try it yourself, you will fail. Out of the box it's 75 pounds and completely unweildy going about it solo. It's a Google TV OS which I am not overly impressed with because I want to be able to control what I see when I turn on the TV, not some suggestion for something I would never watch that doesn't change for over a week. The screen seems to have an overall hazy look (like the topcoat is smoked plastic or something) and I have really come to learn what blossoming is because there is a lot of it here. Once you start fiddling with configurations and adjusting things to your liking (after you learn Sony's terms for everything) things begin to settle to your liking. For example, in Sony's world, the brightness controls the backlighting. The remote is clearly where Sony decided to shave costs. The dial which you use constantly is oddly placed and is small. Also, the settings button is immediately under the power button on the upper right -- so a bunch of times I have hit power meaning to go to settings. If you're playing a game, that can have severe repercussions. I have used worse remotes from Sony, but this is much more of a Google-produced piece of hardware (in my opinion). However, it is Bluetooth -- a saving grace! The TV has some strange, unexplainable quirks. Like the hideous static click everytime the screen changes. I've replaced HDMI cables, looked at everything Sony related I can about it to no avail.Overall, I highly recommed it if you want a big screen at an affordable price. While saying affordable may make some people squirm, the options are so far at the other end of the price spectrum they made me start reducing the size screen I wanted. Until I found this set and countless positive reviews about it.OLED vs LED/LCD? I thought about it, a lot. This TV won because 1. It's Sony. 2. Affordable OLED uses terms like QLED and Mini LED to differentiate themselves from the high-end OLEDs (probably to placate those with bottom-less wallets who don't want what just anybody can have). Since I swim with the regular folk I don't mind having a great TV that most of us can afford. Even if it takes me a year to pay for it.

Well I use a ROKU with about 6 pay-for streaming channels and none are Google TV that the Sony software pushes so hard. It wasn't very difficult to setup my ROKU, yet it wasn't CLEARLY STATED / recommended for the best HDMI cable needed for true top of the line 4K viewing, great sound. Sony should offer a TOP version HDMI cable for a great HDMI experience.PRICE: Obviously not cheap or free, but under $1000 with taxes and shipping. $865 shipped by FedEx 2-day delivery was fine with me.The BAD: I feel Sony could have given a stronger warranty for a new, higher end set with a load of tips and tricks. I think a solid 6- month FULL COVERAGE warranty of items with shipping, handling, wear and tear, AND a comparable to even 1 step-up better model TV set to take its place in the event something goes afoul. Finally back to speakers: these are great but with some Sony engineering magic, add a true bass speaker in the lower left and lower right front fascia to broadcast out hard hitting, tight, snappy BASS! Not a subwoofer; they would need too much room. 2 or even 4 square woofers would add next level sound! David

Great features, but... bugs
1 June 2022

It thinks my XBOX is an Apple TV - DESPITE - me telling it otherwise. Also, something puts it into a state where pressing Home on my Sky Remote (which is NOT paired with the TV btw) switches HDMI ports. A reboot of TV clears that problem. These are both devices that were previously connected to my older Sony Bravia TV and had no such problems.Apart from those annoyances (bugs) the TV itself is performing very well, as a TV. Pick a program, it appears on the TV, typically not in 4K.Android TV user interface? Could be better. It's very Amazon Prime-esque. Plenty of apps. I purchased a 512GB USB thumb drive for that purpose. It's not clear if the drive can be used for both recording (a feature of the TV) and storage expansion, I hope its both. However, having assigned it to storage, and moving data to this device (ie the USB drive) the apps still say their data is on internal storage. Attempting to "format" for recording fails, and it looks like it would have overwritten the storage anyway so it seems it can't be shared for storage and recording.Alexa was a pain to hook up, but it is possible.

I bought this tv a year ago. Was delighted with it once set up but after a few weeks a green flash started to appear intermittently and then at least once every minute. It took Sony 7weeks to send out an engineer who immediately ch aged it for a new tv…result! However two weeks ago the tv started to switch itself off and flash red on the led. I followed all the troubleshooting advice and reset the tv multiple times as it continued to switch off. I also changed any settings (when the tv actually worked) that the troubleshooting suggested maybe causing the issue. The tv eventually switched off and would not power on again. I’m wary of mentioning customer service as I’ve already had to rewrite this because I spoke about them too much but let’s just say that as a paying customer I’m very dissapointed. My advice is do not buy this model of tv! Having looked online I do not appear to be alone in having these issues!

It's uncanny

I've had this TV for 2 years. It's not new, but it's remarkable. My wife and I continue to marvel at the colours and clarity. Things really appear three dimensional. Sometimes it's a bit uncanny. If you give it a good 4K signal - wow. If you give it a good 1080 signal, it'll upscale. If you give it photos (obviously over 8Mpix), be ready to be impressed and impress those who you share them with.My wife plays games on the screen and it performs really well here.PRO TIP for B&H photographers: I selected this TV because I wanted a good, high def (4K) screen to share photos, knowing the colour and contrast would be Sony terrific and OMG, it renders them beautifully without dinking around with the colours, saturation and contrast, simply true to the edit. Really Good Value TV

This is a review for a Sony KD-50X89J tv , it was only set up by John Lewis yesterday and needed a stand so it would fit on my tv cabinet, feet that came with tv too far apart . This Sony tv is a replacement for my old Panasonic 50". I looked for a replacement thought this was a good option although a 2021 model that will soon be discontinuedI thought it was well priced . The look and design and ease of use of this tv was amazing . I paid to have a stand built and mounted and the tv set up all this was seamless and connected Sky Q box to HDI 1 Fire Stick to HDI 2 and Sound Bar to HDI 3 which is for eARC . Very good picture and sound through Sound Bar good with no noticeable lip sync issues . Need to do a few more things like setting up a google account so I can add more content . the tv tuned in 127 channels on set up so all good there and Sky Q synced with the Sony tv control so can use both controllers . I have not had a Sony TV for few years and the build seems very good , 50" tv just the right size for me and will be looking forward to the start of the football season to see the 4k UHD .

Really disappointing
17 December 2022

Have had the Sony bravia a year now and can honestly say it's the most disappointing Sony product I have ever owned and the worst tv. My 8 year old samsung is more stable and is easier to use. It never crashes and I never have to reset it.Initially, instore I thought the picture quality was better compared to the other tvs, had a clearer image, deeper tones and darker dark areas. Once home though I noticed that the google aspect is just a gimmick. The OS is really flakey, constantly having to reset the system, apps don't load properly, sound keeps lowering and becoming crackly. The apps like itv are not up to date like my old Samsung tv, they don't show live content. Casting to the device is slow with constant breaks in connectivity. Sound quality is poor as standard. The tv is cheap looking and the controller feels cheap in the hand too. Settings are poor, there isn't much to toggle with to set up to your preferences. Everything is very limited including sound settings. The sound is very flat and doesn't have the lovely deap surround sound of their stereos or the 12 year bravia I had which was 32 inches and far better than this tv. Although at the time wasn't smart but this isn't really either. The initial desktop you are shown once loaded is muddled and shows nothing of relevance. Menus are bloated not easily accessible. It needs to be more Google and it's not. Sony have just used the name and the search function but that's it. The tv has gotten worse with age and after only a year airways feels like it's going to crash.Have called Sony many times, initially they were helpful but with persistent problems have just started playing the usual game of fobbing me off. Their answer to my issues is to keep resetting the tv to factory settings or update to latest system even though it is already and have supplied the evidence. They said they would send an engineer but now not interested in helping.

Sony seems to be running a lottery with the X85J
17 March 2022

I did my research before buying, and I figured that most of the users having issues was due to user error, the settings are a lot more complicated these days! However, I was very disappointed once I figured out what was going on under the hood. The screen looked funky since the second I turned it on. Pixels looked like they were almost aligned in a checkerboard pattern, skipping between even and odd columns from row to row. I figured hey, maybe it was just some new way of aligning pixels for a 4K set. Then after fiddling around some more, I discovered switching the TV to the Graphics Picture mode changes everything. Every pixel is used, in every column and every row. I figured hey, maybe it was just some new way of aligning pixels for a 4K set. Then after fiddling around some more, I discovered switching the TV to the Graphics Picture mode changes everything. Every pixel is used, in every column and every row. Anything that was a rectangle instantly had nice and smooth edges, rather than choppy ones looking like they were drawn with dotted lines. You can't really notice from far away, but something isn't right when you get close. Even from far away you lose a bit of detail, and aliased edges look worse. When taking pictures of this, I also discovered that my unit had some dead pixels. I've arranged to exchange it tomorrow, but after talking to Sony directly who said that this was a "feature" but refused to tell me which TV's did not have the feature, beyond the A80J which I already knew didn't do this, as someone on reddit who changed their mind from an X85J to an A80J was kind enough to take a close look for me.The kicker is, while arranging transportation, turns out one of my friends' roommates bought this exact TV, but from Amazon! They gave a little more weight to the reviews, what I wrote off as user error, they figured they were taking a chance, and they were right! Their exact same TV, same 43" X85J from Amazon, does not do what my set does. I trust them, but to be 110% sure I'm going to see it with my own eyes tomorrow.By using every other pixel its effectively 1920x1080p, just spaced out across 3840x2160p. It would be fine if I was OK with using the TV In Graphics Picture mode all the time, but I'm actually a fan of motionflow and frame interpolation. Its not fair that someone I know paid the exact same amount as me, got the same size and model of TV, but theirs actually has all its bells and whistles in 4K while I have to turn mine off to get actual 4K.I'm hoping that when I exchange my unit tomorrow, I might be lucky and get a good unit like my friends' roommate. I wouldn't be surprised however if its another lemon, and I have to go to Amazon to get a decent unit. I'll update my review later if possible!

Warranty replacement
2 January 2023

This is my second one of these replaced under warranty as the first one would not connect to wifi and had sound issues where the sound kept on cutting in and out and freezing up the picture which I believe is connected to the wifi issue. Had 3 tech call outs and eventually was offered a new one. Should have taken a year to get a new one when it was obviously faulty. New one is working as it should. The picture quality is as good as it gets with the content currently available. Very little reason to justify buying the more expensive models.
