I bought this lens out of curiosity. It was actually the first thing i bought when i decided to switch from amateur equipment to pro or near-pro photography equipment. This lens is too short (in focal length) to realy magnify things.... and too soft at 2.8 to really be of any use at that aperture. Maybe I should have returned the lens to the seller because the motor squeaks all too often during auto focusing but that is a different story. Steping down the aperture to something like f18 sharpens the image, border to border but you need a very well lit subject or a huge exposure time to compensate for such a small aperture. In my humble view this lens is not worthy. The sony zeiss 24-70 and the sony G 70-400 are much better lenses. The 70-400 is actually sharper than ... MoreI bought this lens out of curiosity. If you plan to buy this lens for bookeh... buy the sony 135mmSTF and train in manual focus. Maybe i got a bad copy of this lens, who knows, can't find anything defective about it, motor does focus fast and easily despite the squeaking sound and image is indeed sharp within a narrow area around the focusing point, so i dont think i have an issue of bad focusing.... it just gets soft all too soon outside the focusing circle at f2.8 making me wonder how can this aperture be usefull unless it is a really small flower or pebble you are aiming at.....

As a previous reviewer stated, this cover does not fit correctly.Don't buy it for the Sony 70-200 2.8 II lens.Seems like a lame re-purposing of a previous design because the manufacturer has not put in the effort to make a new one.The lens hood section is of the tulip design - the Sony lens hood is round. The clear plastic areas do not align with the adjustment buttons on the lens.I bought the similar item from this manufacturer for my Sony 200-600, and it works great. This one does not...save your money.I'll be returning it.

I use this lens on my A99, and shoot it at f2.8 or 4 whenever possible. It's tack sharp, from f4 on down, and f2.8 is as sharp or sharper than either the new Canon or Nikon 24-70 f2.8. This is also an excellent portrait lens for in the field (I use its shorter Zeiss counterpart in the studio), but it is large and heavy. The color rendition, contrast and sharpness of this mid-tele rivals that of several primes due to its new coatings. Flare and CA are non-existent. The weather-sealing is excellent, and tempts you to take it into the rain-forest (and make you trek with it for hours) for some awesome images. The autofocus is silent and near-instant, great for sports tracking, hot-air balloons, concerts. This is a top-notch hunk of glass that will render images as well ... This is a top-notch hunk of glass that will render images as well or better than what you can imagine, but it is very heavy. Exceptionally well made.
Super fast, accurate and quiet focusing. Images are tack sharp from wide open. The latest coatings, internal focusing motor and weather protection makes the extra $1,000 worth it. A note of caution: this lens will not auto-focus with the older, Minolta (except D version) teleconverters, as the lens has its own focusing motor. I had to buy a new set, that adds another grand to the affair. Fortunately, the new Sony TC's are backward compatible (except for 200mm/f4 macro).
Pros: Beautiful color and bokah, Creates lens 'envy', Very Fast Auto FocusCons: Use monopod, HeavyOther thoughts: Bought this lens to shoot my son who plays CF in HS baseball. This lens does not disappoint!Very fast Auto Focus keeps up with the fast action in high school sports. It's heavy and I would not consider using it for long without a monopod.Still learning how to shoot better pictures but already realize the mistakes have been made on the other end of the camera to this point. Not the lens fault. It's interesting how this lens gets us onto the baseball field without any questions from the coaches or umpires. My wife took some pictures of flowers and while this does not claim to be a macro lens- we were both blown away by the results.Lens was not ... In hindsight- I would buy it again.
For the last two years I have been using a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Macro on my a700 and found it to be a great combination, having obtained consistently excellent results. However, at a recent indoor shoot where flash was out of the question, while the Tamron focused reasonably quickly, it was not fast enough to capture a number of the forum delegates' critical reactions. Also, auto-focusing hunting noise was quite distracting when shooting close to the delegates. Consequently and despite the hefty price tag, I decided to purchase the Sony 70-200 2.8 G hoping for a swifter, quieter focusing response and so far have not been disappointed. Images taken at a nephew's 21st birthday party (albeit using flash) exhibited excellent IQ - each image was very sharp with pleasing ... Consequently and despite the hefty price tag, I decided to purchase the Sony 70-200 2.8 G hoping for a swifter, quieter focusing response and so far have not been disappointed. Images taken at a nephew's 21st birthday party (albeit using flash) exhibited excellent IQ - each image was very sharp with pleasing bokeh and had a poke you in the eye presence and vibrancy. Focusing was fast, accurate and quite. Comparatively, the Sony is heavier and more solidly built than the Tamron, has the distinct advantage of a fast SSM motor, focus limiting and auto-focus override controls but does not possess the Tamron's handy Marco function or hinged tripod mount. Clearly both lenses have their place though, for a wide gamut of critical low-light situations, the Sony wins out with improved ease of use and focus response, despite the cost differential. Highly recommended.
So far so good. Have only been using this lens for a few days. So far so good. I'm using it on a Sony A7ii with both auto and manual adapter from fotodiox. I'll update in a week or so.
Very crisp, smooth and responsive lens. Surprisingly light and easy to handle. Incredible image quality at all focal lengths.
An upgrade on the original excellent lens. The weight-saving is a nice bonus but the real selling point was the ability to close focus on friendly wildlife. I no longer have to worry about animals coming too close to manage in-focus pictures.Pictures of a squirrel taken yesterday and a vixen taken today; both full-frame.
