I'm a female, professional nature photographer and freelance writer and use my camera for a very diverse range of shots, many of which rely on fast continuous focus. This camera is the tops to track birds in flight, even with the subject coming towards you. It's fast and reliable. The only downside is the electronics are very fragile so don't flip your screen out near splashing water! The camera is perfect for my slim hands, but can't comment on how a bear-paw holder would feel. The menu is very well set up to find something fast and easy without endless scrolling. One has to rethink ISO as it takes much higher amounts in twilight than other makes. It's also much lighter than other products which makes traveling a lot easier. )In combination with the 150-500 lens ... As expected, the A9 is a very capable professional camera. I bought it for its low-noise, high ISO performance, mainly to cover concert venues, rodeo, basketball, roller derby and polo. I use it with the 24-70/2.8, 80-200/2.8, and also the 24-240 and 100-400 Sony lenses. You can set your shutter speed as appropriate for the action and let the ISO run as high as ISO 32,000 with excellent results. The noise is remarkably low and can be handled in post. The A9 focusing is great in low light and focus tracking is also very effective. The electronic shutter is very fast and silent, the mechanical shutter is not loud with no mirror slap, and the buffer is big enough for high-speed shooting. A few months ago I made the decision to upgrade my equipment. After spending several weeks researching all the various brands I decided to make the switch from Canon to Sony. Because of the nature of the work I do, I needed a set of cameras and lenses that I could be confident wouldn't let me down in critical situations. For the sport and wildlife I choose the a9 because of the speed and silent shooting which to date has proved itself invaluable around animals, and at events where noise has to be kept to a minimum. The focus speed and 20fps of the a9 is outstanding. The camera is a good weight, nice and light but not light it feels like plastic. After spending several weeks researching all the various brands I decided to make the switch from Canon to Sony. Because of the nature of the work I do, I needed a set of cameras and lenses that I could be confident wouldn't let me down in critical situations. For the sport and wildlife I choose the a9 because of the speed and silent shooting which to date has proved itself invaluable around animals, and at events where noise has to be kept to a minimum. The focus speed and 20fps of the a9 is outstanding. The camera is a good weight, nice and light but not light it feels like plastic. The menu system is complex but once you find your way around it and begin to customise the buttons it soon becomes easy to navigate. Battery power is good, I've shot several games, shooting hundreds of images and never found it a problem. Even the digital in crop feature is useful at some sporting events, increasing the range from 400mm to 600mm in an instance. I've dabbled a little in the 4k video and to say i'm highly impressed is an understatement. Handheld video using the sony's 5 stop in camera images stablisation is impressive. Something I am more and more being ask to do. There's so much more I love about the a9 but the last thing I'll mention which is another show stopper for me is the no black out shooting. Being able to watch the action continue as you shoot is weird at first but now I couldn't live without it.All in all I couldn't be happier with my choice to swap from Canon to Sony and whilst using their flagship cameras isn't cheap, finding the right deal at the right made the whole switch extremely good value for me and my whole camera bag is over 5kg less in weight now too. Mirrorless is the future and to a certain extent the a9 is somewhat future proof for everything I'll need now and for years to come.
After pre-ordering, I received my Sony A9iii the day before I traveled to Ecuador to photograph birds. Quite a few of our target birds on this trip were hummingbirds, and so I packed my trusty Sony a1 which has always served me well; however, upon arrival at our first set of hummingbird feeders, I broke out the A9iii. The results were instantly astounding. At 120 fps, if one is able to get focused on a bird (perched or in flight) for even an instant, one will produce multiple excellent frames. Also, at 120 fps, one is unlikely to miss the perfect wing position when shooting birds in flight or upon takeoff or landing. However, the surprise was upon reviewing the files. They were BEAUTIFUL - Great color and an overall vibrancy that was striking. I made some heavy crops and the cropped images held up well even in 24x30 inch prints. THis is so even though the A9iii sensor sports only one-half of the megapixels of the a1.In summary, about 60% of my keepers from this Ecuador trip came from the A9iii. I achieved many shots I had not been able to achieve before. Although, I am not selling my a1, I will now turn to the remarkable Sony A9iii when heading out to photograph birds in action or in flight. Sony has made another remarkable tool for us!
Yes, the tag is high but it's high for a reason. I rented one first from Sony and fell in love with it. Now I own two off then.I've been using the a7iv for photography and FX3/FX6 for video so I know Sony.The shutter sound on this is magical. Global shutter is amazing for video with the 6k downsampled to 4k at 120 no crop is NICE.DID I TELL YOU THE BURST is insane!!!?Worth
This camera is all it was promised to be: Insanely fast. The AF is outstanding and the AI subject recognition works extremely well for birds and animals (I haven't tried it for other subjects). Sony has taken a lighter touch with the in-camera noise reduction but the files clean up extremely well with modern software. The only negative is the 24-megapixel count, but for many subjects this is all that is needed.
The global shutter changes everything for portrait photographers who battle outdoor lighting conditions. Two days after getting the camera, I shot a wedding with this camera. I had another camera as well, but I kept going back to the a9iii. It solved every issue that plagues a wedding photographer. It has infinite control over the buttons, so everything was at my fingertips. The global shutter let me adjust my ambient light to get exactly the tone of sky I want to see and then add the flash, no matter what the shutter speed is. And if you like HSS mode, you can still do that too. Oh and Sony really did the live view display right. I can choose to see the ambient exactly as it will be, even while using flash or I can instantly switch to a view finder style view that ... The only limitation of this camera is the smaller number of MP. But they will release more global shutter cameras with higher MP in them as they figure out how to deliver more power to all of those pixels at one time. But for now, I am thrilled with this camera. First of all, this camera takes beautiful photographs. I am a still photographer, mostly taking photos of birds and wildlife. The images that come from this camera are equal to my A1.But, two things make this camera less than optimal. The first is that the camera viewfinder is very thick and doesn’t sit flush with the camera. It is easily knocked out of place and I fear it will break off if/when I pull my camera the wrong way. If you slide it out instead of picking it up, the viewfinder gets dislodged. That does not happen with the A1 and it is very annoying and potentially damaging to the Camera.The second thing that makes this camera less than optimal is that it is very big.
