I have past experience with the original a6000 as well as the a6400 and use the A7IV and A7R5 for professional use. The 6700 is a great body for the 6000 series cameras. The features, menus, controls, etc. all feel similar to the full size bodies which makes for a seamless experience for those using any of those newer gen cameras. On that premise, the a6700 delivers amazing value for the price and is not competing to be a pro body despite its ability to compete in many categories. As an A7 series user that wants a much lower cost and compact camera for everyday or travel use that functions much like its full-size counterparts, this is a great option.

With the addition of the new dial I'm able to put the camera on auto iso and adjust the shutter speed and aperture and shoot quickly. In the last 4 years since the last update of this camera they have incrementally improved pretty much all aspects of the camera. I'm very glad they moved the movie button away from where my thumb grips the camera. This prevents me from accidentally hitting it and taking movies which often kept me from catching a photo. Its not a full frame camera but the quality is still quite good especially when combined with editing tools like Lihtroom. Your phone is automatically paired with the camera via bluetooth (unless you go on airplane mode to save battery), meaning there are basically zero issues connecting/reconnecting, and transfers and using the app are much more seamless than before. 3) EVF and lcd screen: Sony didn't give us the quality bump I'd hoped for, but there's still noticeable improvement because the EVF is much brighter (bright enough that the eyecup is unnecessary) and the LCD screen is now 3:2, so photos take up the full screen instead of being reduced to fit 16:9 format of previous a6xxx screens. 4) Subject tracking modes. The AF is not only improved, but the addition of assignable tracking modes has been great for my uses, taking shots of people and pets. I use the memory presets to assign one memory slot to humans w/ human eye detection on and then another to memory slot to pets w/ animal eye AF on. This also means I can turn subject detect off in my normal shooting of landscapes and scenes around town, which saves battery life not taxing the image/AI processor. 5) the Creative Looks feature is much improved over the similar feature on my a6500, giving more options, more customization, and better results. I use this feature a lot, and it's nice that it works equally well with .heif files (whereas fujifilm limits its film simulations when shooting in .heif). I find that creative looks, along with improved auto white balance and color science allows me to get much better photos straight out of camera than on the a6500, which requires a lot of post-processing.There are a few downsides, though. 1), I really wish sony hadn't abandoned the internal flash on its higher-end a6xxx models. The flash isn't amazing, but it's extremely helpful to have for angling up and filling in light shooting indoors. It's hard to imagine it would cost much to keep the tiny flash, and there's currently just an unused space where the flash used to be on older models. 2) I wish sony would have used the same dial setup as the same-sized a7c ii, which features 3 customizable dials at the top instead of just 2 like the a6700. Being able to have full manual control without changing hand position would be great. 3) Sony made a bad design choice with the charging flap on the side of the camera. It has no mechanism for opening, and you instead have to pry a fingernail in and pop it open. It generally feels flimsy and like something that could easily break in the future. Seems like Sony could have simple made one door instead of two for both memory card slot and charger, which would have easily solved this issue.

All of Sony's modern cameras are giants compared to the original and I know it's because they also need to be video cameras, but here's a crazy idea for you... make a photo-only NEX-5N mark 2 with a 26 megapixel APS-C sensor and any other modern tech you can get in there. I promise they'll sell like hotcakes! Especially if you can make a new pancake lens or two.

It has great performance in photography and very capable in video. The only real drawback I can think of is that it can overheat over longer periods of intensive recording at high resolution, frame rate and bitrate. I personally don’t require this as I am more focused on photography and interested in shorter videos, which makes this camera a great pickup for me.

I couldn't afford the cameras I really wanted, so I picked up a used A6000 and some FF primes and continued to save towards my A7R5 and FX3 goals. Color science is gorgeous: on a recent fall leaves shoot, every picture was pure eye candy. And while the release of the A9III has everyone ditching mechanical shutters, for me, the sound of a camera's shutter is an important, aesthetic part of using a camera. And the sound of the A6700's mechanical shutter is so soothing I don't think about the fact that I'm not holding a film camera because it feels and sounds like I am.Video as well has been a time warp. During one stills shoot, on a whim I shot 20 minutes of MP4 in 60p handheld on a slope. I had stabilization on, picture profile Standard, and focus speed set to medium, (IE the camera's default video settings) but only because I didn't have time to to find Slog3. Without even trying, every video I took was gorgeous, tack-sharp, focus smooth, and ready to post straight out of camera. Let me reiterate: there was absolutely no post needed. I mean, you could ruin it in post if you really wanted to.I have read the disparaging reviews on overheating. I personally have had zero overheating issues, but then again, I DON'T use cheap SD cards: only class U-3 V90 cards with at least 64Gb capacity (or higher) rated for extreme use to keep buffering down. I also begin all new sessions with a blank, reformatted card so the data has somewhere to go. Between locations, I turn the camera off. During shooting I will routinely swap the battery in use for a cooler one: it makes the batteries last longer, but doing so will obviously help keep the camera cool. Yes, when on, the A6700 does stay warm, but by warm I mean lukewarm coffee warm; my Feelworld monitor, to compare, could fry an egg. The A6700 is a camera that requires a person behind the lens. Common sense should tell you if you need unmonitored video (IE hit record and walk away) or two hours of continuous, high-demand frame rates like 4k120 for food commercials, you should consider a camera (or at least a camera cage) with a fan. However, there is a good side. I took the A6700 for an hour and a half in below-freezing weather recently and discovered it had NO cold-shutter performance issues and NO battery drain. Was this because of warmer operating temps? If so, this is a benefit to me.My decision to get the A6700 was based on specs and potential. The A6700 has a magnesium alloy frame, is weather sealed and is otherwise designed for real-world use. In video, the A6700 gives me 4-2-2 10 bit AND timecode. That means I can do commercials for local tele AND have my audio match the actor's lips. In stills mode, the A6700 shoots raw and JPEG at burst speeds suitable for weddings, wildlife, and some sports so I can earn a side-hustle in stills while honing video skills for Sundance. No, the A6700 won't match the frame-rates of the new A9III, but it has the same AI-AF, 5-axis-gyro stabilization, auto-reframing, and ON and ON. The A6700 shoots 4k60 without pixel loss, and it does this on a megapixel platform that (in stills) is good to go for billboards and large prints, and (in video) is small enough that you don't need to upgrade your computer's operating system to process your data in post. And the out-of-camera results are beautiful, begging the question: do you really need to spend so much time in post?In short, my synopsis is that the A6700 can do EVERYTHING that the full-frame cameras are selling a-la-carte, even if it can't do these things for as long. My only --only-- gripe with this camera is this: if the A6700 was designed with one V90-SD card slot, why can't that slot ALSO utilize C-Fast-type-A?Am I still saving for the A7R5 & FX3? Of course. Sony's Alpha and FX full-frames are still the gold-standard cameras of any Sony-oriented studio. But...! The operative word there is still saving. For those who want to get on with their careers a bit sooner, the A6700 could be the one affordable camera that can get both your photography AND videography portfolios up and running: a specked-out but budget-friendly racehorse on a short lead line. Keep that shorter rein in mind, stay behind the lens and monitor your camera's heat performance as you go, use only clean and reformatted, high-gig U3V90 SD cards for every shoot, purchase a camera cage with a fan if necessary, and [BELLS DINGING] you'll probably start out of your career gate at a full gallop.
